I don't think bitter or angry are the correct words... I think "crazy ass bitch" is the term you're looking for. Her mind is the mess that was left behind, and probably the reason he left. There is no truer truth in the world than "crazy chick's are fun to date... until you break up with them".

@@jamesdemarco7161uh sure. The only thing possible for such an angry song is she’s a crazy bitch and probably deserved to be dumped. God forbid any female shows any form of anger that could seem a bit over the top in the moment because she’s mad or hurt. No she must be a psychopath. Nice to know you support sexist and overplayed stereotypes about women. Good for you. I know a handful of men who say similar crazy bitch statements about angry songs written about exes by women who wouldn’t say the same about an angry song about an ex written by a man. Let’s hope your not one of them and call out “crazy assholes” too.

you have to understand that up to that point ('90s), pop music was full of music telling us how sad it was when a dude left, and how a woman needed to mourn, or find strength to move on, how HARD it was without that man. Alanis kicked the door in and said fuck that shit, dude did wrong, I'm pissed and he's gonna KNOW about it. music definitely changed after that, so it was a key moment in music history

Outside of metal, yup. For what is essentially a pop song, she really puts a lot of heart and emotion into it. My friends and I were all metal/grunge heads in the day, but when this came out, most of us swept into it (of course some wouldn't just because it was too poppy and had a female vocalist but - their loss). This album gets all the attention, but I think the follow up, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, is way underrated. Songs like Can't Not, Would Not Come and I Was Hoping had that same edge in my opinion.

Exactly all of these comments are on point. You can only imagine the producers knowing what a talent they had and combining her without going over the top to tell (basically you found out when you read the fine print on the cd booklet) setting up the studio time with soon to be legends themselves to record instrumentals on this album. Sorry, but she was born in '74 and in 95 she was 21, and already a seasoned performer (she started as a kid in Television - but music was her thing, her teenage years she was up against Tiffany, Debbie Gibson and the like, look up "Too Hot"). At this time she was able to get HER music produced instead of the bubblegum pop of the time. This album was at the end of the grunge era as hip hop came to dominate the charts. It was a strong voice for an overlooked niche, and it sort of opened doors for a lot of solo female vocalists.

Yes, you’re correct. Some people attributed it to Ryan Reynolds, but it was in fact Dave. When they asked her which one it was actually about, she replied, “flip a coin cause they both did me dirty.”

@@paulkinney7129 Ryan was at least closer to her age. Coulier was over 10 years older than her and she wrote this when she was 18, so she would've been underage during their relationship. He was preying on a teenage girl. She's eluded to this in later interviews where she says relationships from her earlier life would be considered statutory rape (would've been then too, people just looked the other way).

    • @ellenseltz4548
      @ellenseltz4548 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@sroberts00 He was much older, but she was not underage. They started dating when she was 18. She wrote the song in 1994 when she was 20.
It's still a problematic age gap, particularly with all she had been through. But they were both adults, and she was apparently on civil terms with him when the song came out, because he asked her how she wanted him to answer questions from the media about it.
The song couldn't have been inspired by Ryan Reynolds anyway, since they didn't get together until after 2000, and the song had been out 5 years by then. If she said "flip a coin," she had to be speaking metaphorically.

You embellished a number of these details. Her relationships with older men in her teens were very difficult for her but they were consensual at the time even if she was too young. After the success of Jagged Little Pill she had to renege her contract which was stressful but her follow-up albums experienced huge drops in sales so of course she struggled with her label. The pressures of fame were challenging but she’s hardly a tragic case. She’s been married for 15 years with three children and still making $ off touring, streaming, sponsorships, and being a panelist on talent shows.

This came out the year my husband and I started dating, and we were together 17 years. He's now with someone who was 3 when we started dating. This song hits different now. Does she know the promises he says to her are the same ones he broke with me? The happy plans they make for their future together are a different flavor of the ones we made? Does she know what will happen to her when her grey hair comes in, her waist begins to thicken, lines appear around her eyes? How old will his next wife have been when they started dating? Does she know?

Thank you for going back and doing the original. I was selling CDs when this came out and in 10 years of doing so VERY few caught fire like this one did. Sure, there were many that were wildly popular due to radio, MTV, or a strong underground following that could best be compared to today’s popular acronym “IYKYK.” Many, many people felt they needed to own a copy of Jagged Little Pill from the first time they heard it. It seemed people wanted to support AM and to get her story out to as many other people as possible.
Live, studio, or somebody humming it - this was always an excellent song from the story it told to the incredible musicianship. In this original video, she SELLS it like nobody else could have done. I think that is the difference. Beautiful job you did with “You Oughta Know” both times, Britt. Thank you.

The version on Howard Stern is just a slower, more stripped down acoustic version. They are both great. I think most people wanted you to watch this version because it is more “intense”(?) and captures the raw emotion somewhat better. Lyrics by Alanis Morissette. Music by her and Glen Ballard.
Late Taylor Hawkins on drums in the video and in the tour. RIP.
Written about AM and Dave Coulier, who cheated on her! 🤯
He was not the only Full House actor who had relationship trouble! 🙄 Meanwhile, John Stamos had a problem marriage 💑 with Rebecca Romijn, who is from Berkeley, across from my hometown San Francisco 🌉 . They eventually divorced 💔 .
Good news. 🙄 1 year after Jagged Little Pill was released, a singer in The Philippines 🇵🇭 was named after her. She is Morissette Amon.
Other good news. 😃 Alanis Morissette, David Foster, Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance were inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022. 🏆
Suggested videos 📹: 1 Alanis Morissette performs One Hand in My Pocket 2 Morissette Amon and David Foster perform Never Enough. 3 Northern Lights perform Tears Are Not Enough 4 Bryan Adams and Tina Turner sing It's Only Love

I recall seeing your reaction to her performance on Howard Stern. She certainly did perform it with a different "vibe" THAT day. But in its original release, the listener was meant to hear the ANGST in her voice and in her words. This song blew her up into the stratosphere. Granted the WHOLE album(Jagged Little Pill) is filled with fantastic songs. This, coming from a Metal-Head. Other artists tried to emulate her, and failed. Her voice cannot be duplicated, it is quite unique. Beautiful, in its own way. She is from my home, here in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She was a bit of a "pop princess" before she truly found herself, once she got angry. Haha. Anyway, enjoyed the reaction and keep up the GREAT work! 🤘🤘🤘

This album came out my senior year of high school, I graduated 1996....love it!! I never saw her live until 2021, when I flew out to Las Vegas from San Jose to see her perform at the T-Mobile Arena!! I was amazing!! If you ever get a chance to see her live, you must take it!
Also her live performance of Uninvited will blow you away, you have to go see her in concert to truly experience that song. The song itself is mesmerizing but when she does it live they turn on a strobe light and she does a crazy headbang dance, which is supposedly Meg Ryan in the movie City of Angels trying to resist the romantic love of an angel. (the song was written for the movie.)

This was such an influential song for pretty much every teenage girl in the 90s!
And, in fact, the entire album Jagged Little Pill.. it was the first time I ever remember hearing something so vengeful and expressive and full of anger, that completely changed the face of music for women.
Hearing this was the first time I think I started to realise about the double standards women faced everywhere, and it didn't have to be that way.
It's ok to pissed off and be vocal about it, you don't have to be a good little girl, smiling serenely at every shit thing that happens.
Yes, its bitter, and spiteful, and its bloody brilliant!
I look forward to seeing more of your discoveries! ❤

  • @fretless05

A little background: most of the songs on the album "Jagged Little Pill" including this one, were written about a secret relationship she had with an older man that had to be kept secret because she was underage. The fact it was a secret is why she's been denied the cross that she bears... nobody was allowed to know her pain and anger because of it's source. Yeah, she was bitter and angry, but she used it to write a really powerful album.

This song always reminds me of when I pretended to date my best friend sophomore year of highschool so the stalkery girls would give him space, lmao. One in particular...a psychopathic red head named Katie...chose THIS SONG for her choir solo tryout song...sang it in front of the 100-person choir class...(yelled it, more-like😅) and she was staring scary dagger eyes into him while pacing back and forth...her eyes never looking away or blinking, lol...woooo! NEVER piss of a red head...especially one that has no soul...which it is debatable if she did...I've rarely met another as oddly disconnected and so natural at giving me nothing to read as she, even now...memories, right?
