    Really good comparsion, Dan! Even if there are plenty other videos covering this, I think your take is a refreshing one. The reasons you prefer the Octatrack are the same reasons I prefer the Digitakt :D. The Digitakt is such a focused device that I can get going with minimal effort. The Octatrack on the other hand can do so much more, but I find it requires a lot more planning ahead to avoid tripping over your own decisions down the line.
    The Digitakt is also simple enough that I've gotten to know its relatively few features very well. This leads to me making stuff quicker because there's fewer things to worry about and I know them well enough that my first decisions are usually the right ones.
    I'm gonna have to rewatch your Octatrack Template video. The OT has too much to offer and I'm missing out by not using mine more. If I can get used to working from templates, then I imagine I'll have a better time with it :)
    And congrats on 1000+ subs!

    Great video dude! You totally convinced me to keep my Digitakt despite its limitations. I realized that for the things I can’t do efficiently on it (I.e. sample slicing) there are better tools for those things anyways and I can still make use of the Digitakt in those scenarios/workflows.

    Thank god someone finally made this video.
    For me, I'm very often impressed by the Octatrack, but in 3 years, I've never once used it and thought to myself, "that was enjoyable, I had fun."
    Honestly, there were a few times that i would have sold it, if not for the fact that the eject button on my SD card reader literally ejected iself across the room, and was too small to find. Anyway, I've recently picked up the Syntakt and Digitone, and god damn, do I have a lot of fun making music on those boxes, without very much banging my head against a wall. (Is the Octatrack the Dark Souls of Samplers?) Despite the fact that I'm actually using the Octa MORE now as an FX processor/performance mixer/crossfaderizer for the other two boxes, now I'm just craving the shit out of that streamlined goodness, but for samples.
    In short, i'm probably going to join team BOTH, and also, I'm probably going to need some rad dad to help me love the Octatrack.

    After almost one year, I would be curios to know what do you think of Digitakt nowadays after the 1.30 firmware which added a lot of new functionalities (extended pitch range, a second LFO, external input functionality, base-width filter, and new features on the multimode filter). For me this firmware was a DT game changer!

    The Octatrack song mode is amazing!! It’s literally he best song mode on any hardware sequencer I’ve ever used or read the manual for. I use it to build songs because I can get very specific on snippets of patterns to use (like, I can use the last 10 steps of one pattern as a fill at the end of another pattern). It’s as almost as versatile as using a DAW to arrange with. It’s also fairly painless to use. I literally just sold my Squarp Pyramid because, even though it’s the literal best hardware MIDI sequencer I’ve ever used, the song mode was so miserably bad that it made the whole product completely pointless to me. It’s definitely not a con!

    Man I totally get the part with 30 min / day. Hence my quest for the perfect box. I wish Digitakt had slicing. Like a second mode for chromatic that just plays various cue points. I don't even need more than 16.
    I had the OTs and I really understood them well but the DT is so much better UI/UX wise. I love that If you re organize the samples in the recordings it keeps track of them.

    When I look at that finger-painting over your right shoulder, I like to think that you're really Darth Vader, and you're living in a different timeline where you're a stay-at-home dad, and enjoy your harmless hobby of producing electronic music at home. You still have these little villain manifestations in your personality, though, and they present themselves in ways such as your black office chair and that kind of evil looking scruffy black chin-beard (in lieu of the mask.) In this world, you have a fantastic relationship with Luke, and instead of bulls-eyeing womp rats and dreaming of transmitting his app to the academy, he's just chilling out, doing mostly normal kid stuff like making you those cute as a button "Hands Down Best Dad Ever - Love Luke" finger paintings for you to display in your command station, err, work area. Maybe sometimes you look at him and wonder if someday it will come down to some awful confrontation where an arm gets cut off, but you dismiss that as just craziness, and say something like "C'mon champ! How's about you 'n me head into the galley and make us some s'mores!" Anyway, that's what I always think.

  • @darenager
    @darenager 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    A comment on the sound - it is just neutral, DT hypes the sound a bit , as does Toraiz SP16 (although differently), OT can sound flat if you don’t get a good level in, and remember to turn off timestretch in attributes if not needed.

  • @petapixels

    I have the Digitakt and I love it except for not being able mix the output with the inputs in stereo. It’s possible to turn on monitoring but then it’s in mono, and without effects. I’m considering the Octatrack but the workflow is so much better on the Digitakt. It would be awesome if the Octatrack and Digitakt would have a baby.

    Tsh...😄 So tough...to decide. Hey Daniel love your channel and your sense of humor. I had both, but I’m not really productive so keeping both wasn’t an affordable option. I miss the DT sometimes as all those options on the OT can really take away from the eagerness to play it at times. Not really overwhelming unless your trying to do a bunch of things your not familiar with at once. But for where I’m at with just under a year in the OT, I have the DT covered and YES! I too LOVE the crossfader, that was one of the main reasons I bought it, aside from just having all of that audio to mangle and remix from my whole collection of jams on the flash card to access and start making tracks with...which I still haven’t really done but as I get more comfortable with it I get more going at my own pace and just space out and randomly do stuff reveling in that thought that I’m FINALLY done! I got the OT and I don’t need anymore gear. Ok well maybe the analog poly synth one day but I’ll be fine with my VST’s and analog mono synths otherwise and if I could only keep one piece at least I have it now.

    Thanks for your refreshing take on this topic, very helpful and enjoyable to watch! I think the Octatrack has a fundamentally different role to the Digitakt. The Digitakt primaily seems to be an instrument, and I don't mean to diminish it with the word "only", it's fantastic as a drum machine/sampler, but that is its main scope. And while the Octrack can also be a drum machine/sampler (and arguably not as good as the Digitakt in that role), the Octatrack appears to be more often used as an integrator (mixer, processor, master controller) of synths/instruments. Being stereo it can collect all the various instruments for sampling, slicing, processing, mixing. BTW, being stereo can we consider the Octatrack as having 16 audio tracks rather than 8?

  • @dorn_beats
    @dorn_beats 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I use the cue out for reverb. I want reverb on all tracks but also want a delay on all tracks. I use a cable from cue out to an input and have a track with a thru machine listening to that input doing dark reverb.
    But a few nights ago before sleeping I had that great idea to not use a thru machine with dark reverb, but a external reverb box and get it back in the octatrack via direct monitoring. WOW this frees up a whole track for me! Thats worth so much! Any ideas what I should do with the freed up track? I'm thinking of setting it up as a "always resample the master and do crossfader tricks with it" thing...
    Thanks for your videos! Very infotaining!!

    Thanks so much for this video. I'm trying to figure out which is best for me and I'm having a hard time. Maybe you can make a recommendation. I have hardware synths that I want to sequence, and I want a sequencer to act as a brain for those other hardware things. I already have a Model:Cycles which is where I start my songwriting process. I need something to sequence other gear in a similar workflow as the Cycles. Inevitably I'll want to have some sort of sample-based machine to fill in for what Cycles can't do. Play some samples now and then and sequence other hardware I have. I THINK the Digitakt is what I'm looking for, but I just kinda need somebody to confirm that for me.

    The Octatrack is maybe my favorite device overall, but it seems like every screen was designed by a different guy, and none of them were allowed to talk to each other.
    Like why are "time" values displayed in 3 completely different ways, depending on which screen I'm in? Retrigger time is fractional, and snaps to display fractional values like 1/16, but LFO speed is 0-127, but the arpeggiator speed is like "6x." 6 what? what the fuck does that mean!
    I'm also convinced they straight up named some parameters wrong. It sure sounds to me like the "WDTH" is Q, and the parameter they called "Q" is actually resonance.
    It would also be extremely nice if, in general, the parameters displayed the actual current values (milliseconds, decibels, ratio, whatever) instead of making (almost) all of them just 0-127. It's not so bad for something like mix, where 0 is just 0% and 127 is 100%, but it makes it really hard to tell what's going on sometimes if you're using like the compressor, where attack, decay, threshold, and ratio are all basically mystery values, because you don't know what the max or minimum values are, so there's no way to tell what any of the in between values are (and I don't think they're all in the manual).
    Also, I'm sure everyone has complained about the sampling already, but here I am saying it one more time -- I will forever by mystified as to why, in a device billed as a "performance sampler," sampling into it from an external source is so needlessly convoluted.
    I really hope they go back and give it one more once-over and just fix a lot of the aggressively incoherent UI issues. Or someone makes a cool custom firmware like I've heard you can get for the Machinedrum.

    If anyone is poor as heck and needs a cheaper alternative, I suggest buying an MPD218 for Koala (Android) or if you've got an Apple product, you could get a Korg NanoKontrol with sliders/knobs for MIDI cc mapping and your transport functions, there's also AUM + AudioShare + iPad Air 2 (iOS 14+ and has the headphone input still) which is the cheaper route is you want to multi-track record without spending close to $1000 lol

    They really aren't that comparable. Digitakt is more of a Drum Machine than a Sampler. Octatrack is a full fledged sampler and pretty close to a workstation. Digitakt is basically an Analog Rytm without the Analog engines (and a few other bells and whistles).

    • @callum6224
      @callum6224 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The digitakt is a pretty capable sampler too, it’s way more than of just a drum machine, I’m not sure why you say that it’s not a full fledged sampler or whatever. It’s got 8 midi tracks with a midi LFO each, 4 notes of polyphony, class compliant usb that you can send both midi and audio to and from, and sample from, as well as both traditional input sources.
