I am also descended from Hopkins. Not unusual since Hopkins has one of the most descendants of all of the Mayflower passengers. I also am descended from both Constance and Giles, two of Stephen’s children. For anyone descended from Giles and Constance, there are headstones for both of them in Eastham adjacent to Route 6 on Cape Cod. Joining them in the cemetery is Joseph Rogers, also a Mayflower passenger.
I learned last week that Stephen Hopkins is my 12th GGF. I am so proud to descend from such an independent thinker! He wanted to make a good life for him and his family REGARDLESS of the “rank” he was born into. He also envisioned a form of government that was agreed upon by the people and for the people . He was truly an innovative thinker. What a man! May he always Rest In Peace.

I freaked out until I discovered that after 11th cousins everyone is related to everyone else.

Just and FYI -- the picture you hold up is of Stephen Hopkins of Rhode Island who lived about 100 years after the Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower. I'm not sure if the 2 Stephens were related, but I don't think so. As far as I know, there are no actual paintings of Stephen Hopkins. I had assumed that Stephen knew Pocahontas, so thanks for confirming that. My understanding is that the identify of his first wife is in dispute. The Hopkins family is the only family not to lose a family member during that first year, which is really quite remarkable.
I am the 11th great granddaughter of Elder William Brewster whose family were passengers on the Mayflower. My genealogical ancestry came through his grandson Love Mayflower Brewster and down through my mothers side. It makes me very proud that my family was one of the very first American settlers. I have a grandson who is part Native American so he carries the blood of not only the first true Americans but the first settlers.
I believe that Stephen was actually hired as the assistant to the chaplain of the 2009 relief expedition, the Rev. Richard Buck, before they left England; that is why Stephen was on the Sea Venture (the flagship). Jonathan Mack talks about Stephen's hiring in his new book about Hopkins called A Stranger Among Saints. Also, I find it fascinating that Shakespeare's play The Tempest was inspired by the wreck of the Sea Venture and that Shakespeare's character Stephano in that play is thought to be based on Stephen Hopkins.

There's just one problem with the "Tempest" story. "The Tempest" is believed to have been written from 1610 to 1611, several years BEFORE the ship "New Venture" foundered on Bermuda.
