Inline Skating Addiction & Blood Toronto

  • Two roller crashes, multiple stairs and 'flow skating' by City Skater Bill Stoppard. City inline skating downtown Toronto on inline hockey skates. Rollerblading stairs, obstacles and streets.
The best inline skaters wear padding; on this day Bill is neither the best rollerblader nor padded. Inline skating wipeout/flow route is Toronto's business district, inline skates used are bauer RX20 inline hockey skates.
Remember, the best skater will pad it out when in doubt.

Someone once asked me: "Aren't you a bit too old to still be skating?", and I my answer was: "I'd certainly be if I did not".
    You inspire me, Mr. Stoppard.

I started skating at 48 -- and now I'm 66! When I'm asleep & dreaming about skating, then of course I skate like you. ;^) When I'm awake, well.... that's a different story. But no matter how old we skaters get, we never stop learning and improving. Even watching videos of skating tricks I'll likely never be able to do physically still brings improvement in the things I do attempt to do. I love ramps, and love to hop off curbs and jump a little 2-step staircase we encounter on San Francisco's Friday Night Skate. I hope to work up to 3 steps eventually. When I fall, I always do it HARD, so I wear all the pads, helmet, mouth guard, etc., which let me concentrate on having fun rather than worrying about getting hurt. I hope to keep skating 'til I'm in my late 80's... maybe longer.

I used the heel brake heavily in the first intense year, then grew into other stops as confidence grew. When you take the brake off, it opens up stairs and drops to you, also makes drifting on and off curbs smoother.

Well I am almost 50 and I love my rollerblading. You must see the looks I get. Well I don't give a ..... have a problem . I just cant wait to get on my skates. Too little available time. If you do a search you will see most rollerbladers worldwide are between the ages of 30 and 60. Love you videos. Wear some pads. I only started wearing mine 2 month ago and been skating for a number of years. The padding just gives you more confidence.

Great to hear you have the fever. The skating demographic used to be older; in three years my skate vid viewers have gone from an average age of 40 to primarily 18-24 year olds. You'll finally have more company on the roads soon; which means the strange look effect might get diffused! Keep reppin hard J!

A few years ago I wasn't very confident on skates as yet and I went down a long down hill. I increased speed so much that I was starting to worry on how I was going to stop. As I got closer to the end I tried grabbing a pole but at that speed it was useless and I fell on to the tar road. I had no protection gear at all. I twisted my knee badly and thought I would never skate. I just took it easy and after 6 months it was gone. I was back on my skates and know just not doing stupid things.
I will first practice moves and wont try anything I haven't practiced.
Still loving it more than before.

The same here in the UK. Just recently, over the summer, I've seen a few more young skaters around - things are looking up! What isn't looking up is the state of the roads and pavements/sidewalks here. You need to be pretty damn sure of your skill range before attempting them, or have done a recce beforehand. +jerseyboynaz I'm the same as you - a late starter at 48! And loving it. I resent every day that I can't get out on my skates, for whatever reason. Started out in July. I've progressed from car parks (drilling those skills) to parks, and aim to be on the roads (quiet ones!) by the spring.

I have just had a vacation in the great city of Toronto! It was fun to see places that you skated all over the city. I admire how connected you seem skating through these concrete jungles. It seems your routes through the city are a progression of lines you have skated before. Your style of skating seems calculated and not just randomly sending unknown places. Thanks for all the years of great skate content!

I think your videos are awesome. You are my inspiration right now with Rollerblading. I am 27 and recently started to skate again. I tore up my skates recently after dodging a five year old little boy. Learned my lesson. Kids are unpredictable. So I bought some new skates with bigger wheels. They are K2's with 100 mm wheels. My old pair where 82 mm wheels. I am thinking of buying me a selfie stick like yours and recording my own videos. Thank you for the inspiration I used to think that nobody wants to skate anymore. They rather skateboard. I like rollerblades. P.S. I laughed hard when you fell on this video because of what you said and then you fell in the crack. lol!

Hi, Bill. I'm Drew. Just wanted to drop a comment since I've been binging on your channel (I don't normally comment because of how comment sections can be) and have spammed your channel around my office and social media to interested parties.
It took me about 2 videos worth to get used to the selfie stick but I've grown quite fond of your videography. I am greatly enjoying your well articulated narrations and informative insights to skating and am enthusiastic to start skating soon. I just need to pick the right skates. Could you throw some advice my way for someone that is 183cm tall, 75kg and severely out of shape? ok the only important detail here is I'm a noob, haha!
Ultimately, I think I want to find myself in something with 110mm wheels for the speed and comfort on less-than-ideal surfaces (city skating mainly). I say think because I'm anticipating my preference may change once I get into it. My main intent is for a good workout but I really want to have fun while doing it so I can somewhat ignore (not to be synonymous with deny) the fact that it's a workout.
I'm sure you probably answered these inquiries in your videos somewhere but if I researched it without asking I wouldn't be able to be engaging, now would I?
Thanks in advance and I look forward to more awesome videos!

Well I skated both roller blade and skateboard. Definitely for me skateboard is much less traumatic than roller blade. When you feel you're losing control, you can jump off the board any time you want and stand on your feet. But yet it is unclear for me, how to act in the same situation skating roller blade.

PintoPonyProductions put that go pro stick away. You can wrap your go pro around your leg or just keep it on your head. You will feel better skatinf without that stick. And if you fall you can atleast catch yourself with both hands. But those were sick moves bro. Im not planing to become as good as you because i actualy enjoy soccer a lot, but i might go sk8ting once a week. Great video keep up the good work, and dont use the stick.

Without the monopod the video would be unwatchable. Of course if you'd like to send me a video drone that tracks; I'm in!

PintoPonyProductions haha. Il get you one right now. But I mean if you could wrap the go pro around your leg we could see the track better. But we wouldn't be able to see what you are doing, so yeah you've got a point there. But you are very well at this. And you fall and stand up and go right into it again, good job keep up the hard and good work.

Hey, I'm a beginner skater, and your videos are very inspiring :-)
What is your opinion of the heel brake? (currently my own method of controlling speed)
Is it like 'training wheels' for a bike, to be removed when proficient, or do you not use it simply because you use hockey skates? Thanks :-)

I just bought a pair of Seba Highlight Carbon. Not sure if it is a good pair of skate for a marathon inline skate in Berlin. Not sure what your opinion is from an expert skater of using that kind of skate for a marathon?

not to criticize but for the music u could always use a song from the free youtube music library such as the song: hang ups (want you) - Otis McDonald. or even part of the track if u wanted. u can mix up the music. don't be afraid to make the music free with ur skating. love ur videos!!!
