I had the same interpretation. It's whole song had a feeling of loneliness and a longing to connect. Wonderful and insightful lyrics by a master singer songwriter. They don't make them like this anymore.
Exactly! Reminds me of the one time I called an old boyfriend just for the comfort of someone who knew me like no one else every did or could. RIP Bob. I will love you forever.
Like many Bob Seger songs, this one always struck me as having a strong element of sadness. It's less about seduction and more about two people who are trying to just make it through the everyday pain of life. Very poignant song, much like "Night Moves" and "Main Street".
Maybe it's because he didn't get his big break until he was older and had been in the business several years. Stranger In Town's got some serious grownup melancholia on it.
I know you don’t have Bob Seger in your top 5, but you have a look of pure joy every reaction you’ve done of him and you’ve only scratched the surface of his catalog.
In June 1976, Seger went from playing in front of 50 people in a Chicago bar to three days later, playing in front of 59,000 loyal hometown fans at Pontiac Metropolitan Stadium (Silverdome) north of Detroit. - Segerfile
When a rock ‘n’ roll song could have a strings section, and still be legit rock. When a popular song was written with thought and the lyrics were meaningful. When the singer didn’t have to rely on auto tuning.
Bob is a plain old rock n roller, simple as that! Very traditional rock ballad with a great story, great vocals, great subtle executed compositions behind him. Bob Seger represents everything that is good about rock n roll. Thanks for picking this excellent song for us.

You know it's a good song when you can follow the words, the emotion & how the song builds up with intensity, brother Bob Seger hit it out the park with this one. Great song Jamel...
That's a better scenario than I always pictured. I had thought more of how it feels to find yourself in a bar, at a down time in your life, and you meet a woman there too.
I'm glad u said that. Maybe it's cuz I'm a romantic or that I'm a girl but the one night stand in Vegas doesn't do it for me. I always pictured 2 people who ran in the same circles or know each other from around town finding themselves alone together.

Growing up in the Detroit area Bob is our local hero. He’s got proud Michigan roots and we love him. No matter where we reside now, Bob will always be in my playlist. 🤩🤩
“Let’s make it last, let’s find a way.” Two lonely people who unexpectedly make a connection and need comfort. There’s a hope that maybe it will last and they will find the love they are looking for. Beautiful song.
@@nickyl9040 Maybe you are not talking about the same Sheena Easton. The one in this duet is a top ten voice. (or maybe you can take the Livingston 30 day challenge)
To me, the song's words do sound like a one-night-stand , but he's also singing, very openly, about being lonely and longing for love, so I don't think he's *just* talking about "getting it on" here. I'm old enough to remember some of the late '70s and early '80s, and the not-always-wise choices that many people made out of loneliness and desperation. This song reminds me so much of that era, especially as it did come out in '78.
I grew up in the 80s, born in 82, so 80s and 90s, and I still much prefer listening to 70s, 80s and early 90s music than any of the soulless dross being made today.
He's a beautiful story teller. Very much like Harry Chapin. The lyrics reach out and touch your heart because you can identify with them because we've all been there.

For me this song is a natural progression from Night Moves. The singer is older now. He’s been hit with reality a few times. He hasn’t found “the one.” And he just wants that connection, even if it’s only for one night.
I like the idea of a Bob Seger musical with the story told by his songs. The two characters from Night Moves weaving in and around each other's lives. Never finding what they want because they are trying to replicate the feeling from Night Moves.

Bob Seger, yesterday, today and tomorrow! Detroit area kid who made good! Been a fan since the Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. One of my favorite songs by Seger!

No rocker does buildup and lifts like Bob Seger. He’s been one of my favourites for decades now. I think one of the highlights of this song for me is the little piano hit after “still here we are” at 4:02 - it fits just right.
Bob Seger was such a great songwriter. Only saw him once as a kid but I’ll never forget. I went with two of my gorgeous female friends. We got dressed up like we were going to a ball. Hit the club afterwards! We had the best night ever and talked about it for a long time. I miss the old days!!
I saw him twice on his good bye tour. I am originally from Michigan and I had to hear him say good bye at home. He sang "the famous final scene" there (not in stl where I saw him earlier). I cried thru the entire song. He is a legend. No one comes close to singing the stages of our lives like seger.
So glad you found this gem of "Brother Bob's" ...yet another reason why Bob and SBB are the soundtrack of my life! That voice and the perfection of his lyrics are why I have loved Bob Seger since the first time I heard him in 1969! Ahhhhhhmazing!
I agree, there's a ton of great songs from him. Really good storyteller.. Try Hearts In Decline, It Doesn't Matter, Our Last Farewell, Sweet Magnolia, Windows and Walls, Seeing You Again, As the Raven Flies, Tell Me To My Face, Tucson Arizona (Gazette), and Lonely in Love. Some are rockers, some are ballads... He was so diverse. In reading up in him, I found out that all the members of the Eagles played with him at one time or another... Joe Walsh produced some of his albums!
Sounds like they were two souls looking for love and decided it wasn't with each other. Also sounds like she is ready to leave and he's asking her to stay for one more night and then they can go on their separate ways. Anything Bob Seger gets a thumbs up from me.
My favorite Seger song, with so many just behind. Also, Bob has said many times this was his mom's favorite of all his songs. Thanks for tackling this one, sir.
I totally understand what you are saying, but it can also be a song about a couple going through problems. I have heard this song so many times and it hits me in different ways. Thank you for your reaction, I always enjoy what you have to say! :)
I remember this great song very well i was 18 in 1978 When it was released ,, The same LP as OLD TIME ROCK AND ROLL The 70s IM miss sooo much ,, We had our FREEDOME AND REAL LAUGHTER NO MASKS , Thank you Jamel for bringing back wonderful memories of the 1970s
This is one of Bob Seger's very best songs ever; easily one of his 5 best. I only just now noticed that the piano opening is nearly identical to that of The Beatles' "Let It Be."
In the old days, when a guy would ask you nicely and take "no" for an answer no problem, and not start by sending you pictures of his junk before you exchanged a single word.
@CHARLES VELTEN EXACTLY and Kudos Sir!!!! It's such crap! It's all SO superficial and in my opinion, the anticipation and getting to know someone is the REAL thrill! They've dumbed it down to such a pathetic level. I feel SO BAD for this younger generation hiding behind their screens. NOTHING is real anymore.... Just my thoughts. Peace :)
@CHARLES VELTEN That's exactly it... They run their mouths about stuff they've only SEEN/HEARD on the internet with NO real clue of what they're talking about and NO threat of repercussions. In my opinion, you have no business speaking on life issues etc., if you haven't lived it! Ignorance is the WORST epidemic that has EVER afflicted the human race and the internet is quickly making it a pandemic. (IMO) Peace brother....
@CHARLES VELTEN Agree and again, insulting and or ragging is just another tiny example of ignorance and lack of forethought before acting or speaking.... Everyone is flexing the WRONG muscles!!!! SAD state of affairs...
Great musician and stand up guy. I saw him live when I was 14 at a county fair right when he got his big record deal. He insisted on playing several previously scheduled small venues. Maybe 500 people it felt intimate yet real Rock and Roll.
I think the song is about two people finding a very strong connection. It's exciting, terrifying, etc.. What the heck does it mean? But when you connect, the vibe switches to "let's not worry about the bigger picture. we got this moment rn, so let's be present af."

Story is he wrote this song late one night to finish off his album. Bob is an amazing songwriter!!!
The Kenny Rogers version of We Got Tonight is awesome as well.
This is my favorite song of all time by Bob Seger. He is such an amazing artist.
“Katmandu” and “ Nutbush City Limits” are really awesome too
If you can only do one more Bob Seger song it has to be Roll me away. But please do a lot more of his stuff.
I love Bob Seger sure brings back memories oohhh my goodness, beautiful ❤️
I rank this among the top three best rock ballads of the 70s along with "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton and "Your Song" by Elton John.
@Theodore Ritola
I agree♥️ Wow I sure miss the 70s 🎵 music on the radio 📻 (SiriusXM~Rock On)☮️♥️
From Bob Seger you're missing "Roll me Away", but try to make the official video, it's great (I don't know if it is allowed here to put the link).
One of his best!
This is one of Bob Seger's very best songs ever; easily one of his 5 best. I only just now noticed that the piano opening is nearly identical to that of The Beatles' "Let It Be."
Stranger in Town is a truly great album that takes me back to a more innocent time. I love this album.
Honestly? Buy a copy and listen straight through. Your spirit will thank you.
As a kid I had a cassette of this album and played it so much the tape stretched out and became unplayable.
Bob Seger is one of the most underrated artists. He deserves a whole lot more credit than he gets.
