I had an RS4 cabriolet and I miss it every time I drive my current car.. I've driven a couple of these and they are magnificent to drive.... You can cruise around all day in comfort and then mash your foot to the floor when you want to fly...
The color is TO DIE FOR! I first saw "something like this" in the Abarths and the latest Opel Astra GTC. This kind of grey makes every car look even better.
Ooooh does this V8 sound good!! A friend of mine has the B8 RS4 with an HMS Exhaust (basically straight piped) and the sounds that car makes are from heaven. He changed his C63 Estate for this RS4 and is not disappointed with the change at all

Gotta love Matt. I remember there was a video in which he was driving an insanely fast tuned E63. I remember him maxing it out in 4th gear being like 20MPH, 21MPH, 22MPH lmao.
Hoorah, The smoking tyre is back. Matt needs to up his workload, we do not see enough of him anymore, and he is the top bracket of presenters on youtube.
317lb-ft of torque isn't that much. Especially for a V8. And just like what Dylan said, for that price, it's slow. 380-400 would be a more reasonable number.
As an Audi guy, the real problem with that figure is the S5 with 3.0T (SC'd) you get 325 lb ft of Tq. Which costs significantly less and then there is the fact if you mod the SC'd V6, it's WAAAY out in front of the RS5 on the bang for buck scale and outright acceleration. Audi should have ditched the RS 4.2 NA after the B7RS4 IMHO.
In Germany many RS5 drivers upgraded the RS5 engine. After those upgrades the engine produces anything between 504 and 600 BHP and between 448 and 590 NW of torque.
just for comparison the RS5 coupe weighs 4000 pounds. The M4 Convertible weighs 4055 pounds. The standard M4 weighs 3530 pounds. Audi needs to completely redo the A5/S5/RS5 line.
+senorgato70 In addition to the quattro system, the Audi convertibles utilize suspension characteristics under the carriage that create a ride quality that have been more luxurious to BMW's. BMW's 3 series persona focused on a more sporting driving experience while Audi's RS5 persona focused more on sport/luxury driving experience.
Matt, the idea of feeling the car flex makes me shiver. It makes me think of a 60's VW Bug cabrio with unibody frame on that center-tube chassis. No rigidity. If you can't put your elbow on the door and hand on the windshield edge for fear of it getting crushed, that is scary. Another "here is the truth" review that was enjoyable AND informative. Thanks
It's not "down" on torque for a naturally aspirated engine. The relevant question is the power to weight ratio. See Matt's video on the coupe, it's plenty fast and handles just fine. It's not a Porsche Cayman GTS or Turbo, but those are completely different cars altogether.
A convertible is INTENTIONAL. I had a 2019 RS5 Sportback and I loved it. I love RS5s, all of them. I had a chance to drive an 2022 RS5 coupe. I just had to see this convertible.
I didn't even find that exhaust note to be that great sounding, I was kinda turned off by it. But it's probably one of those things where I gotta be driving it and hear it first hand to really appreciate it.
I'd love a breakdown of the type of consumers that buy these cars. I'm almost willing to bet that most are not taking them to track days, and probably regard them as equal to the competitors.
I think the next version will smoke all the competition If they would listen to what I think they will nail it all its keep the 4.2L add more torque like 490 and bump up the power to 520bhp and simply use more carbon fiber and aluminum
What kind of sunglasses do you have? I'm shocked how much this thing weighs. And surprised it makes less torque than the S5 supercharged 6. I would not spend money on this. Would probably spring for a 6 Series convertible.
Fugedibobo Of course. The point being, for the high-performance RS5 model, why not use a version of the turbo 8's that are in the S6/S7 to increase torque. The 8's in the S6/S7 allow those cars to essentially match the acceleration of the RS5, despite both being 400-500 lbs heavier.
The next generation RS5 will probably come with a turbo. They just had to find another use for this engine other than the R8 V8 and the RS4. It's a really good engine though, sounds good also naturally aspirated. Also if they put the same V8 into it that the bigger S and RS models have they risk overpowering the car. I mean a turbo V8 RS5 would be just a 10 second ECU upgrade away from having 560hp. What Audi screwed up here that for a high revving naturally aspirated V8 it's smarter to have a light chassis that makes the car more agile and pair heavier cars like the bigger S models with the turbo engines that have more torque especially in the lower rev range.
great video and great photography. Just a reminder, if you are looking for a v8 4 seat convertible the Maserati Grancabrio is still on the market. Poshier brand, more spacious (yet ageing) interior and a great sounding v8.
I like the way you review cars, Matt. It's not dramatic, but you do know what you're talking about) Aand, what's more important, i quickly understand what this or that car feels like and what sense it makes. Like old top gear in a way, but better.
The S4 is the sweet spot for the Audis. 3800lbs and the supercharged v6, which is easy to mod to get 450hp+ from and more importantly... plenty of torque.
it's interesting how it feels like 6-10 years ago there were more options for a semi-sporty-luxury-gt-convertible than there are now especially in this price range, but there are a lot more full on sport cars, now.
I'd get the supercharged V6 S5. It's probably a little lighter and quite a bit cheaper, then put a good tune on it and get 400-420 hp at the crank. Still fun and gnarly-sounding I think.
I have always been able to get Audi launch control to work exactly once. It works once, and then won't work again for the rest of the day, using exactly the method described in the owners manual. It's infuriating. At least other brands have a "launch unavailable" indicator or something.
Matt Farah This is quite interesting. Never heard of something like that here in Germany. I've driven some RSs myself and had a lot of fun with the LC. Worked fine everytime I tried. Based on your experience with the system, it makes me wonder what went wrong with all of your models.... hm.
They must be super different from my 2010 S5, because my 4'11" wife doesn't have enough leg room in the back. The cabs are super freaking heavy, though it's only really evident in tight corners.
"You get sunshine in your hair" - I'm not meaning to be rude, but since some people can be painstakingly slow with their realization process I'm just gonna come straight out with it: Matt, you're bold!
james64ibm are you trying to say bald? You really had a lot of build-up to that statement, lots of big words and stuff, and then spelled the one key word wrong there.
Matt Farah You win this round, Farah. P.S.: It may excuse me that I'm a native of the Teutonic homeland, and that bold is also a word that describes you rather well (which is a good thing). So, in one sentence, you're bald, bold, very American and rather likeable as a whole (lot).
Im a car guy and I love convertibles. Theres nothing like driving top down on a beautiful day.Besides, when the performance stats become obsolete you still have a fast convertible. All be it, not all cars look nice as convertibles.
Easily the Worst Generation of Audi RS yet compared to it's competition. They needed to have a decent HP advantage over their competition if they where going to go with such a High reving Low Torque Engine to make up for it, considering it has Less HP then the C63 it wasn't going to end well.
Different age/generation of engines though. The problem Audi has-as do many manufacturers, it's not a question of can they build a beast of a car, but rather should they. No-one is gonna buy an R8 convertible if the next gen RS5 can rape it in a race.
***** Yeah but whose going to buy the RS5 if the TTRS can outrun it? It's not all about performance, it's about the price tag if you can afford a r8 you get the r8 even though the v8 is slower to 60mph than the RS4
S Miller In the performance sector, performance is a big issue. An RS4 will hold it's own against a V8 R8, but that's because they use the same engine. In V8 guise the R8 is typically seen as a powerful sports car, much like 911's are. In V10 form, it's a supercar.
Yeah but that's the thing, the RS4 is cheaper than the R8 and probably abit faster in its current 444 bhp guise but because image and perceived wealth is important in expensive cars, people will buy the R8 over the RS4 in most cases if they have the money. Hence it's not all about performance. But I am not saying performance is not a big factor, just that it is not the only factor.
S Miller Well no, I'd ball that bullshit to be honest. Whether you have an RS5 or an R8 people will think you have dollah, and you'll look boss parking up. The R8 is a mid engine, and when released was described as one of the best cars to ever drive. The RS5 in comparison is a front heavy car with Audi's trademark understeer at the limit.
My friend literally just bought this exact model/color etc. Something about the sound this thing makes when it shifts is something else; not as nice sounding as his Maserati but still. Big chunk of change though..
"Everyone loves the color"? What? I'm sorry, but IMO that "Nardo Grey" is the worst color I think I've ever seen. It's literally looks like shiny primer. I imagine the guys in the Audi factory sprayed the car with grey primer and thought "Okay, what color should we paint this one?", but then they thought "Aww fuck it, we'll just spray the clear right over the primer and give it some fancy name.".
YAKYAKYAK And a red car looks like a lollipop, a yellow one look like bee, a blue one looks like a smurf, a green one looks like barf. This could go on forever. There's no way to justify why you don't like a color. It's all opinion.
ewt415 Even if it wasn't the color of primer, I still wouldn't like it. Metallic gray can look pretty good, but IMO solid grey looks pretty bad. It doesn't have the deep/shiny look of black, or the contour highlights of white, or the eye catching pop of red or blue, or the glittery look of metallics/pearls. It's just so _bland_.
Every time I get an Audi to test, the launch control works exactly one time, and when I line up for another angle, it won't work again. Every Audi I drive has this issue.
Matt Farah There are many variables that could cause launch control to not work correctly, such as: - Transmission or oil temp too cold - Drive select isn't set to Dynamic (if equipped) - You're doing it too much. Audi/VW puts a lot of restrictions on launch control so that they don't have to keep replacing transmissions.
Stevegasm If there is a good reason the Launch won't engage (i.e. Temperature too high or too low), then there is no excuse for not displaying that information on the LCD screen, just like the Lambo's do, since the fault in the computer is already there. If it's not gonna work, that's fine, just tell me. But to have it try to engage the clutches over and over with no indication of why LC won't engage is ridiculously frustrating, and a massive oversight.
I like the "primer grey" sure it's not going to kick but all the time but it's more like having that one sport coat in your wardrobe that you need for that one occasion (showing the world that you are that alpha dog) and you can get down to business , sensible but daring.
It's a cool car... Its 4wd so a legit fun good sounding car, that you can use year round in the north (with snow tires). I can't think of any track capable 4 seater cabs... Maybe a 911 cab?
RS's are great... But they need to lose weight.. For the extra you pay - Audi should use more exotic materials.. Carbon Fiber - plastics - aluminum. The S8 (not really an RS) is all aluminum - and the R8 is an aluminum spaceframe - so those two are fine. The other RS's though need a diet - and then they will be top of the class.
Regarding that launch control issue you had at the end of the video - I've had the same problems with a few VW's. It just takes a few tries sometimes. Very frustrating.
I can only imagine a 50-60 year-old with long grey hair, open collared t-shirt with a gold chain hanging around his grey, hairy ass chest driving this. Absolutely nobody else.
4400 lbs! Well, at least it sounds nice. Kinda like a pretty girl who's slightly overweight and likes drinking beer! Did the launch control eventually work? Looks like you got it to work during the video. Thanks!
Correction: The 0-60 time is 3.9 seconds per Motortrend. Check their TH-cam channel. My RS5 is awesome Matt is correct, I would recommend the coupe like mine. Wonderful and wicked car.
MikeDriver007 motor trend ran 4.3 for the convertible. Solid number for that car. www.motortrend.com/roadtests/convertibles/1306_2013_audi_rs_5_cabriolet_first_test/
Beautiful car, I saw a blue coupe at a car meet where I live. It had the titanium package (black grill and black wheels). Nice car, but for the money, you could get an M4 that will be faster. But I like both the RS5 and M4, I would have both of them
This car has aged like fine wine.
'You get sunshine in your hair'. Do I have to point out the irony?
Hahahaha!
philip danielsson maybe he ment beard hair.....
he meant hair follicles that are barely seen.
That engine is one of the the greatest engines ever made...obviously it doesn't help being weighted down so much but it's still a masterpiece
I miss my RS5 it was an awesome car. The sound of the v8 still ringing in my head.
I’m looking at one- what did you get instead?
I had an RS4 cabriolet and I miss it every time I drive my current car.. I've driven a couple of these and they are magnificent to drive.... You can cruise around all day in comfort and then mash your foot to the floor when you want to fly...
rs5 front facia is sexy as hell. every rs is sexy
"What's that color called?"
"Primer."
Last time I checked AM colours, they had 15 different shades of primer and nothing else... ;)
Nardo
The only Audi ive ever owned was a 2007 RS4 4.2 V8 6sp manual. Had intakes, full exhaust and a stage 2 tune. Made 425awhp and was amazing.
Just an enjoyable review on every level as always.
What's up nick?

Bingo
just dont bring it here
people really need to stop talking about that holy shit
I think Matt works with Drive+, so he's making money there, as well as probably ad revenue from this channel. Doesn't need to do TheSmokingTire+.

Why do people give these videos a thumbs down? Anyways...good job Matt and Crew, thanks for the hard work.
Who gave it a thumbs down? On my device TH-cam doesn't show a count for those. I think only the creator sees those.

Great video, great narration, great analysis, great car!
"ONLY" 317 lb-ft of torque. There are plenty of cars, GOOD cars, that would kill for that much torque. :) That exhaust note gives me a boner though.
for a car that expensive, in a performance line, its very slow. my 15 year old v8 has more than that
317lb-ft of torque isn't that much. Especially for a V8. And just like what Dylan said, for that price, it's slow. 380-400 would be a more reasonable number.
317 isn't the problem. It's 317 at 4000 rpm. That's extremely high up in the rev band. It's making mid 200s around 1500-3000 rpm.
Sarin Murlidar
What you're saying is that it's a honda v8.
As an Audi guy, the real problem with that figure is the S5 with 3.0T (SC'd) you get 325 lb ft of Tq. Which costs significantly less and then there is the fact if you mod the SC'd V6, it's WAAAY out in front of the RS5 on the bang for buck scale and outright acceleration. just for comparison the RS5 coupe weighs 4000 pounds. The M4 Convertible weighs 4055 pounds. The standard M4 weighs 3530 pounds. Audi needs to completely redo the A5/S5/RS5 line.
it is coming, remember that first a5 was introduced in 2007, i think next gen a5 will be here in a year or two
And don't forget that the M4 Convertible has a hard-top. Agreed that the A5/S5/RS5 line has always been porkier than it should be.
You're forgetting the RS5 is AWD which is heavier than RWD
+senorgato70 In addition to the quattro system, the Audi convertibles utilize suspension characteristics under the carriage that create a ride quality that have been more luxurious to BMW's. Another "here is the truth" review that was enjoyable AND informative. Thanks
I love it when you do reviews
Your reviews are some of the best on TH-cam.
The fact that this car weighs more than Matt's minivan absolutely ruins it for me.
Same here! How did they even manage that lol
It's not "down" on torque for a naturally aspirated engine. The relevant question is the power to weight ratio. See Matt's video on the coupe, it's plenty fast and handles just fine. It's not a Porsche Cayman GTS or Turbo, but those are completely different cars altogether.

Great video. Simple, straight to the point, and great aesthetics. Keep it goin
S5 convertible is my favorite convertible grand tourer 2015 thru 2021 gonna buy one used of course 😎😎😎😎
Me too was deciding between the m6
Great review. Most honest car review I've seen in a long time.
This car is so beautiful, you got to see it in person, no ugly angles, but I wish the noise was better

I couldn’t tell but didn’t hear you say it, you have to be in manual to launch.
Another superb review! Thanks and keep up the good work!!!
My favorite gen and color of the 5 ❤

it's interesting how it feels like 6-10 years ago there were more options for a semi-sporty-luxury-gt-convertible than there are now especially in this price range, but there are a lot more full on sport cars, now.
not that I'm complaining of course.
I'd get the supercharged V6 S5. It's probably a little lighter and quite a bit cheaper, then put a good tune on it and get 400-420 hp at the crank. Still fun and gnarly-sounding I think.
"That's the most obvious thing I've ever said" lmfao. I love you Matt!
Good review
Thanks for sharing The Smoking Tire.
"And that's the most obvious thing ever said." Ha ha! Love it, Matt!
another good review!
I own for 3 years now and more and more I love my rs5 open
b8 4.2 good unit. I recon
Did I died? This car exists? Stunning
Holy mother fuck! it gained 400lbs over the coupe! Holy shit, what did they reinforce it with? Lead? That would explain the flex as well.
Great video. I listened to the latest pod cast today and I'm with Zack, not feeling the grey color.
I have to admit I like this gray color.
The RS5 sounds amazing when mated to either an Armytrix, Remus, or Eisenmann exhaust
Is this road speed restricted at all ? How can someone have so much fun , gosh i need this job :)
You got the launch control working during the video, what was going on at the end there? User error?
I have always been able to get Audi launch control to work exactly once. It works once, and then won't work again for the rest of the day, using exactly the method described in the owners manual. It's infuriating. At least other brands have a "launch unavailable" indicator or something.

Your Aston video had it down perfect.
I like your sunglasses, where can I get sunglasses that have that matte finished look on the lens?
Nice editieing Matt
Love the paint.
This is a great car. I'm not a convertible fan but a big panoramic sunroof would do. Also i want those lights on my A4 B7.
Thanks for not posting this on Drive+ like the rest of your cronies do :)
Amen to that haha
We are in the year 2015! Why haven't they come up with a very light convertible mechanism yet?
Hey Matt, how did you get the Launch control to finally work then ?

Agreed 😂🍾
Maybe. It would be close but the new RS5 would smoke the S5. Looking at getting the RS4 with that beautiful 2.5 5 cylinder
Aaron P The RS4 comes with a 2.9L twin-turbo V6, the RS3 comes with the 2.5L turbo 5 cylinder...

ewt415 it looks like concrete, if it was earthier or darker it'd look much better.
YAKYAKYAK And a red car looks like a lollipop, a yellow one look like bee, a blue one looks like a smurf, a green one looks like barf. This could go on forever. There's no way to justify why you don't like a color. It's all opinion.
... and that's why any color is acceptable, as long it is black....
ewt415 Even if it wasn't the color of primer, I still wouldn't like it. Metallic gray can look pretty good, but IMO solid grey looks pretty bad. It doesn't have the deep/shiny look of black, or the contour highlights of white, or the eye catching pop of red or blue, or the glittery look of metallics/pearls. It's just so _bland_.
hes the best reviewer!
At the end you showed how the owner manual is wrong regarding launch control. But earlier in the film you used it. So how did you fathom it?
Every time I get an Audi to test, the launch control works exactly one time, and when I line up for another angle, it won't work again. Every Audi I drive has this issue.
Matt Farah maybe I'm wrong but I think they lock the launch controll for maybe 10 minutes or 30 ... because of the clutch
Matt Farah There are many variables that could cause launch control to not work correctly, such as:
- Transmission or oil temp too cold
- Drive select isn't set to Dynamic (if equipped)
- You're doing it too much.
Audi/VW puts a lot of restrictions on launch control so that they don't have to keep replacing transmissions.
That is the sign of a bad gearbox. We launched a 911 Turbo S 63 times consecutively. No problems there.
But to have it try to engage the clutches over and over with no indication of why LC won't engage is ridiculously frustrating, and a massive oversight.
what a sick color!!!
I like the "primer grey" sure it's not going to kick but all the time but it's more like having that one sport coat in your wardrobe that you need for that one occasion (showing the world that you are that alpha dog) and you can get down to business , sensible but daring.
Surprised it's only .3 sec faster than my S5 cab.
Love the Alive guy tat.
It's a cool car... Its 4wd so a legit fun good sounding car, that you can use year round in the north (with snow tires).
I can't think of any track capable 4 seater cabs... Maybe a 911 cab?
Camaro zL1 or mustang gt/cobra convertibles?
Imprezas and Evos, I guess. Granted, it's not the same thing.
Sad dude. LOVE MY 2015 RS5 Cabriolet... YESSIREE!!!
Wich color?
@@dictatte358 primer
what road was this Matt?
RS's are great... But they need to lose weight.. For the extra you pay - Audi should use more exotic materials.. Carbon Fiber - plastics - aluminum. The S8 (not really an RS) is all aluminum - and the R8 is an aluminum spaceframe - so those two are fine. The other RS's though need a diet - and then they will be top of the class.
Amidat I enjoy your intelligence level. It’s a good thing! I respect your opinion!
Look at these looks it's so sexy. And the sound omg. It's the best looking cabriolet
Hey Matt can you do a review of your Honda Odyssey just for the hell of it
Regarding that launch control issue you had at the end of the video - I've had the same problems with a few VW's. It just takes a few tries sometimes. Very frustrating.
I can only imagine a 50-60 year-old with long grey hair, open collared t-shirt with a gold chain hanging around his grey, hairy ass chest driving this. Absolutely nobody else.
Revitalyzed I'm 28 and i have an S5 cabrio. I just love it.
"That's.....that's the most obvious thing I've ever said", fucking priceless Matt ha ha.
if the smoking tire replies to this It would make my day!
Matt, thanks for responding. I was talking about the coupe that Johnny tested in the head-to-head with the Merc C55 AMG Coupe. Both ran 3.9 to 60mph.
Hate the color but I am colorblind so what the hell do I know?
Another great video, Matt. It's appreciated.
Beautiful car, I saw a blue coupe at a car meet where I live. It had the titanium package (black grill and black wheels). Nice car, but for the money, you could get an M4 that will be faster. But I like both the RS5 and M4, I would have both of them
