The Olympus Pen-F: A Legacy of Excellence in JPEG Quality
The Olympus Pen-F is a camera that has garnered a significant following among photography enthusiasts, and not just for its retro aesthetic and robust build quality. A major highlight of this mirrorless camera is its exceptional JPEG output, which many photographers regard as some of the best straight-out-of-camera (SOOC) images available. Here’s a closer look at why the JPEGs from the Olympus Pen-F are so highly praised.
    Creative Color Profiles:
The Pen-F offers a unique feature in its Creative Dial, which allows photographers to apply different color profiles directly in-camera. These profiles include options such as Chrome, Vintage, and Monochrome, each meticulously crafted to deliver specific aesthetic results. This versatility enables photographers to achieve a wide range of looks directly in JPEG format, reducing the need for extensive editing. The camera’s ability to finely adjust parameters like saturation, hue, and grain further enhances its creative flexibility.
    Advanced Image Processing Engine:
At the heart of the Pen-F’s impressive JPEG quality is Olympus’ advanced TruePic VII image processor. This engine is adept at handling noise reduction, dynamic range optimization, and detail preservation. The result is JPEGs that are crisp and clean, even at higher ISO settings. The processor’s efficiency in balancing sharpness with noise reduction ensures that fine details are retained without introducing unwanted artifacts, which is a common issue in other cameras.
The Olympus Pen-F’s reputation for producing some of the best JPEGs straight out of the camera is well-deserved. Its superior color science, creative color profiles, advanced image processing engine, high-resolution sensor, and convenient shooting experience all contribute to its excellence. Whether you’re a professional seeking a reliable secondary camera or an enthusiast looking for top-notch image quality without the hassle of post-processing, the Olympus Pen-F stands out as an exceptional choice.

There are going to be a lot of people jump on the new S9 bandwagon, and that will make Lumix think they are on the right track. I’m just going to keep rocking my GX85 and E-M10iv until OM or Panasonic decide that M43 is still a worthy cause. The M43 system suits my needs perfectly……I travel for work and I ride motorcycles on the weekends, so the small kit suits me. Good small car kit and a smaller saddlebag kit on the bike. Pictures are, and should be, simple….all of those “bells and whistles” on cameras don’t make composition. I’m trying to learn composition……getting into this hobby later in life. One thing I have become acutely aware of, when you look at photos from the “great” photographers new and old, those guys could take a great picture with any camera type or format.

Keep on rocking it. I just won an award at an art exhibition with a photo taken on the GX85. Have you ever checked out the Lumix Ambassador webpage? Gave me a lot of confidence to see what people were doing with Lumix 4/3 cameras and lenses, yeah a lot of them are moving up to full frame Lumix but they did great work with M4/3 which means you and I can do.

We REALLY need a Pen-F ii
    Weather sealed
    Same sensor as OM-1
    Updated EVF
Add to it updated (weather sealed) f1.8 primes...or a companion to the 20mm f1.4...maybe a 10mm f1.4 with similar build.

Been using the Pen F extensively, nothing beats its color profiles when it comes to creating your very own. 17 1.8 and/or the 15mm 1.7 is the best combo for this (mine's the PL15). Focus something around 3m, lock it by removing AF on the 1st shutter button stage (half press) and moving it into another button, then set to f/5.6 or 6.3, auto ISO and you're golden, no need for extremely fast AF, just focus on your composition and click away. Mu4/3 system is great for street photography, you get fast exposure times at low ISO while taking advantage of the deeper depth of field the sensor gives!

I’ve got to say OMD Systems is missing the boat not re releasing this camera updated with latest tech. Every camera company is trying to capitalize on the Fuji VI success and OMD has the solution and crickets.

Taking a camera from drawing board to production takes time and resources - not something OM Systems currently has a lot of. And for what? Bringing a camera for street photographers into an already saturated market? I would imagine, when they come to release the PEN-F mkii they would also like to release a weather-sealed camera, and that will require a new range of compact weather-sealed lenses - an added complication.
The EP-7 and E-M10 mkiv sold so well in the home market Olympus/ OM System became the third best-selling camera brand in Japan after only Canon and Sony, so they understand the importance of the compact market though. They sold so well in fact, they sold out, and since the 'Olympus' brand licence has now expired they are without a compact camera on the market, and that's a problem. They have a camera release penned in for Nov, which I expect will fill this space, but whilst there have been mumblings of a PEN-F mkii, I expect it's more likely to be an OM System OM-10 (successor to the Olympus OM-D E-M10 mkiv) or an EP-8, and not be all that remarkable. Olympus also had a pattern of releasing a '5' line camera no more than 12 months after every '1' line release, so we're also due a OM-5 mkii (which will be a paired down OM-1).

Yeah, the PEN-F can out-fuji Fuji with its profiles. It's customisable profiles can emulate any film or go way outside the box. With OM-Workspace the profiles can be saved (or grabbed as a jpeg into a profile gallery), edited and reloaded to the PEN-F by USB. In WS those profiles can be applied to other Olympus camera raw files.
The lens I have more-or-less settled on for this kind of work on both the PEN-F and the E-PL7 is the Lumix PZ14-42 because it is pancake folded and that lets the camera be slipped into a jacket pocket. A prime is fine when you can move about to frame a shot and not get run over or fall into a harbour.

A weather sealed Olympus Pen-F with superb ibis and modern sensor will become one of the best travel cameras.

I've been thinking for a long time about what to buy, stumbled upon your reviews, and recently purchased the Pen F along with the 25mm f/1.8 for $1,050 at a local store. I also bought the 12mm f/2 and now I'm deciding between the Olympus 75mm f/1.8 or the Panasonic 42.5mm for portraits. Even though it's expensive for a 2016 camera, it looks and feels great in hand, almost like a film camera.

You've gotta love an industrial area! Great video. You can rely on these places to provide the colour and on Olympus to capture. Fuji would do a great job too though!

I am working on selling my Olympus E-M1X so I can either purchase an APSC Nikon Z like the ZFc or Z30, or I can stick with another Olympus camera to go with my 12-40mm f2.8 pro. I want the Pen F digital but would take and love the OM-5, EM1 mk III, or the E-M5 mark III

If you go Nikon or any other brand you have to buy into another suite of lenses. It's an expensive hobby.
The PEN-F is related in technology to the E-PL7, E-M10ii, E-M5ii. The PEN-F is the culmination of the then new tech, and tbh hasn't got much better since; after the E-PL8, the Pen and Pen-Lite got plasticised and dumbed down. The E-M10iv is nearest to the E-PL7/E-PL8 in function but plastic instead of the gem-like metal body. The EP7 is the successor to the PEN-F but no EVF, and no AP2 port for one. The PEN-F body is a little larger than that of the E-M5ii. The stills image quality of the PEN-F can rival that of any of the latest MFT offerings.

Hi Grant. Agree S9 is a joke for several reasons and yep for me a viewfinder is a must not just when the sun is shining but also because I need reading glasses for close up work. If those colours haven't been edited in post then yep that PenF does produce fab colours. They do say Olympus/OM Sys do the best colours and one day I'll prob swap my G9 for a OM1 (altho I do have a E-M5iii as a backup that perhaps I should use more often). I think you have done a fabulous job with photos from that location which is quite inspiring, I'd never thought of photographing the mesh but those pics work well. All the best, Rich

I swapped my old G9 for a new, heavily discounted OM5 with 12-45mm f4 lens, primarily because of its lower weight and size, and IP53 weather proofing. I've kept my GX9 which I love, but can't risk using when in often wet British weather! Ignoring the over complicated menu on the OM5 for a moment, I think its a great little camera with incredibly fast focusing, and the IQ seems at least comparable with the G9/GX9.

I preferred the M11 shots - they seemed to have better tonal range - and the lack of flexibility with a Q2 would be the clincher for me.

The S9 is not aimed at seasoned photographers it's for the mobile generation,I think Lumix will release another compact FF camera for photographers in the near future.
OM system have chosen the market they wish to try and get a foothold and it's not street, discreet photography, it's wildlife and adventure.
I doubt there will be another Pen-F.
