The scary thing about the monsters in this movie is what you don’t see!! This is what made Lovecraft so popular!! He didn’t focus on gore and blood but instead played on people’s imagination of what could be there!!! When you don’t see what’s happening it’s much more scary

I feel like sure, if one tries REALLY HARD they can get that message from the film. Like the woman in the film who says that ppl are basically good....and then watches that belief be torn to shreds by humans around her.
Another message is definitely how readily religious fervor easily lends itself to becoming an abusive cult that throws people against each other if it can make one side feel emotionally righteous. And how easily humans are emotionally manipulated by religious leaders who sound authoritative.
Or how the government does shit without regular people knowing and we can do absolutely zero to stop it.
Or how important it is to try and gather all the facts before making major choices.
I mean, there will always be hope...but there doesn't necessarily always need to be. Existing in a world where literal monsters have killed many ppl in front of you and social order devolves....living after that experience isn't super desirable for everyone. The ptsd would be intense and perhaps intolerable for many.

@@ayooshhayoosh Yeah, I guess it's a dilemma of staying or going out. I mean I get his logic of staying in order to hold out for a chance to see his loved ones (in this case his wife); or resort to her choice to go outside, risk her life and stay close to her presumably dead children since it already looks like everyone is dead outside. It's a risk. Either way, they're going to die. Personally, I wouldn't be able to live through the nerve wreck of wondering about what happened to my kids in that situation. When you lose a loved one, it feels like you're already dead just the same. Sadly in end, the odds were against him. It's what I love about this movie. Both choices are valid but never easy.

Author Stephen King is the most absolute genius at writing horror movies. "The Mist" is one of the best books he ever wrote and this movie proves it! The ending centers around what we've all been told over and over, the word of God, "Thou shalt not kill". This movie is one of the best I've seen in my lifetime! Many lessons taught here; "Judge not that ye be judged" is another. Thank you, Mr. King for

The ending... Just... The ending... Wow... I can't imagine the amount of pain David felt after he mercy killed his friends and own son, just to then be rescued. It's the only time you don't want to make it out of something alive. Your death being the good ending, being rescued being the bad. His mercy kills were in complete vain. If they just waited in that car, rescue would still come, and David would still have *some* happiness, as he'd still have his son. But David wanted to give him and his new friends a less brutal and painless death. But again, it was all in vain. That's what I love about this ending. It's unique. It's different. It proves how not all stories have to end happily. Sometimes, the bad endings are what makes the conclusions so great.
(Also, to the ones complaining that I "spoiled the ending", this is on you for continuing reading this, despite me literally mentioning the ending as the second word. I didn't spoil you. You spoiled yourselves.)

A thoughtful and interesting comment, But we don't know that anything would have ended any better. Was the portal closed? Did the military win the fight? Between the choice of sparing a loved one a horrific death in favor of a fast one, I might have done the same thing. As might have you. So, I guess what I'm suggesting here is, this is only chapter one of this story, it could go a lot of ways from here.

I really think this might be the most tragic, heartbreaking, and gut wrenching ending to any film ever made. I just hate how they all agreed to kill themselves if/when it starts to look completely hopeless. I feel like they should have gone out fighting, or at least tried to anyway. I wish they would have gotten out of the vehicle and just WALKED, trying to survive and stay alive as long as they possibly could. Even if it looks like the whole world has ended around them, and there's no hope left.. I say go out and chance it anyway, and MAKE those fucking things kill you or eat you if it comes down to it. But continue fighting until that moment comes!

What Ollie said about humanity as a fundamentally insane species is 100% accurate. We've wiped out races and species and we're continuing to do so even though we all know better. We would have people act just like those in this movie: the religious fanatics, the bold people that would rather seek help than to wait for rescue, those who would kill their family and self to save them from a worse fate, and many others. We best hope there isn't an apocalyptic event because I feel the worst in humanity would certainly outshine and outlast the good and we'd be left with a world of terrible people and not even remember what the word good ever meant.

@@shimantachakraborty2364 Frank Darabount, who directed The Mist, came up with the current ending. ( killing the son& others in car.) Stephen King was delighted with this ending and got SK seal of approval 👍
SPOILER ALERT: Original Ending by SK:
SKs original ending was that the father and the son and The Others in the car drove to his home to search for his wife and keep his promise to his son to go back to Mom. Mom had been attacked by the spiders and entombed in a web like a shrine. SK's version ends with The Father saying that he's driving south with his Son in The Mist. , He's low on gas, the mist is all around, he's listening to the radio trying to get a signal, and he hears the word Hartford (CT) and he has Hope. Give it a read. It's quite the story as it was originally written.

In the audio commentary home release it talks on the ending being written in as Stephen King left it ambiguous. Besides the basic psychology of the film.. monsters create monsters create monsters, that ending shows David dying more than any human or creature attack could have inflicted. Frickin amazing feat in that while the day broke and the mist was lifting one man was so capsized in it's depths that the end proved only the beginning of the horror. ✍️👌

As it crawled up towards her face she said, "My life for you." It was the same line the Trashcan Man said in 'The Stand'. Stephen King is nothing if not consistent. :) I read a book by King explaining his early influences. The word "great" wouldn't be enough to convey my appreciation for the movie. This is a didactic movie which teaches us real good lessons of life: how to take control over your emotions when surrounded by problems, not to lose one's humanity when faced with such a situation that could easily lead one to choose to be selfish disregarding the good of others, how co-operation brings forth strength and unity and above all the desired results we have seen in this movie. The best part of this movie is the portrayal of dilemma and human weaknesses when they tend to feel confused and make wrong decisions especially letting themselves get influenced by wrongdoers. The fight between logic and unfounded beliefs and the challenge to keep your logical mind functional even under stress is another aspect that wins my heart. The climax is truly pathetic, it literally brought tears in my eyes. I got awe struck to see the end... didn’t expect that. Hope that the maker might have had it in their mind while filming that we should never lose hope, whatever it is, we should wait to see what it is till end.
