- Why is Joy's hair blue? In this video, I provide both a practical and an interpretive explanation for Joy's blue hair in Inside Out and Inside Out 2. I also analyze the significance of Joy's blue (rather than blonde) hair, and I conclude by explaining how Joy's blue hair reinforces some of the key emotional themes in the Inside Out series.

Thinking about it, the emotions have colors that associate with other emotions.
You can associate Joy's blue hair and eyes to sadness. It can be tears of joy when you achieved something that you always been chasing your whole life.
Fear's red bow tie associates with anger. We can react in a harsh manner because we fear the following outcome from happening. Just like being defensive or reacting to your son approaching danger. This is how Riley felt when she got a penalty box, she was hard on herself because that penalty could had her team lose the game.
Disgust has a purple scarf, means the things we dislike are things were are afraid of.
Anxiety has teal eyes like Envy. When we envy what we do not have, we are anxious that we are missing out something. People may react to this situation by rushing unnecessarily.

Joy also has a fully green dress which could symbolise disgust or aversion towards things that unsettle, unnerve or confuse her. With her attitude towards sadness in the first movie and lack of acceptance and even acknowledgement of the negative aspects present in Riley's person, this seems to tie in nicely with Joy's character. There are aspects of force and avoidance in her actions. Moving away from things she sees as 'negative' to focus more things that she sees as positive.
Sadness and Nostalgia share a white/grey color, meaning when you have sadness towards happy memories, you miss them.

I'm pretty sure the color on their clothes do not symbolize additional emotions based the colors. It has to be what is ingrained on them like their skin or hair.
About anxiety... I feel Anxiety having a different eye color was also practical so she could be seen as the deuteragonist. All the other emotions but Joy all also have matching eye colors.

Here's what I noticed:
Fear's coat (??) has a bit blue, representing Sadness. Sadness can serve as a source of fear and avoidance.
Disgust's scarf is purplish, representing Fear. We sometimes can fear things we are disgusted about, maybe something like forming a phobia.
Envy's dress has purple, representing Fear, again. When we like, envy a close friend, we're afraid to not lose them because we think they're better than us.
Anxiety's eyes are turqoise, like Envy. When we envy what we do not have, we are anxious that we are missing out something. (credits to @Gridkeeperr for that)

@@butterscotch_crk Thanks for giving me the credit! Also oh my goodness, I did not pick that up! Also when I read your Disgust's paragraph, my eyes look at phobia and I also think of paranoia. Now, I think of it, I think paranoia is a mix of disgust and fear.
@@butterscotch_crk Speaking of fear and sadness, it makes sense. I could think of a scenario that happened in Inside Out 2, Riley realizing she is not going to be her friends in her high school and she has to start making friends from scratch.
Fear’s bow tie, while not being entirely red, does have a reddish hue, as well! I feel like this can show how sometimes when you’re scared, you react with what looks to be anger, even if you’re not actually angry
Blue is Joy’s hair because you cant have joy without sadness
2:30 when I think blue, I think pretty clear skies and shiny oceans on a warm day, maybe thats why Joys hair is blue. to symbolize the blue things that make us feel joy
But if you follow that principle, then Joy could have every colour in her palette. It’s just as the video says, it’s about symbolism. Plus you visually see a shade of blue when you look at Joy’s hair; it doesn’t make the audience think of a shade of blue that they would personally think of, like the sky or the ocean. I would think that little illustrations of waves or clouds on her clothing would be better representative of those things than her hair colour. Perhaps that’s what would have made Riley happy?
In certain situations we cry of happines, cry is a sad reaction, but it shows in happines as well, like we see in awards or comemorations such as marriage or birthdays
I think another practical explanation is that joy is very colorful, she has blue hair, a green dress, red lips etc. because joy can manifest in a lot of different ways.

There’s sadness within joy, fear within disgust, and anger within fear. And from a personality view, joy and anxiety have green in their design because when they’re not the leader, they’re disgusted

It also helps differentiate her from Riley. If she was blonde (like Riley), she might be seen as even MORE of the top emotion, or as the mini personification of Riley in the mind

Nostalgia with brown skin and white hair:
Nostalgia was the least important one in the movie and had almost no screen time in the movie I think
Her symbolism is easy. You get grey hair as time goes on.
Well nostalgia represents aging and older peoples hair turn white but also from a stylestic standpoint white doesnt count because if you go on the colour wheel, if you go up enough in the brightness in the colour brown(as well as any other colour) it becomes white, thats because white in art usually means nothing including no colour,(thats why it represents emptyness, and purety, its alsp why we say "i turn of a new page" the page is usually white and blank meaning clean and pure) white compliments EVERY single colour, same goes for black, since black is the combination of every colour so in the future if they plan on somehow mixing all the emotions to create a mix of everything it would be most likely black or have some black and grey details (ofcourse that is if we are talking about colour mixing and stylestic choice)

You are absolutely right. I imagine that the reason behind Joy’s blue glow is similar to the reason behind her blue hair: to convey her emotional complexity or her exceptional status among the other emotions.

This is tremendously presented and incredibly informative. I had always thought that Joy carried a bit of sadness with her, and it's true Joy and Sadness work well as a team. They all do and they grow and evolve just like emotions do in reality. Pixar had the help of psychiatrists to make the movie as accurate as they could and it's brilliant.
I just find blue to be a nice contrasting colour to the Tinker Bell colour scheme that Joy uses.

I haven’t watched the video and I don’t rlly remember the first movie that clearly, but I think the placing on the blue in the hair hair instead of clothes like a lot of the other emotions is because joy tries to get rid of sadness(?) in the first movie, and hair is something a lot of people cut off. I doubt her hair actually grows, but if it were growing to keep it that short it would be like constantly cutting sadness off

in simple terms, sadness is an umbrella term for not only depression, but also grief, loneliness, failure and missing the past. thats i believe what this movie was trying to convey, sadness is much more then it seems to people who are happy.

The blue hair is just the design they went through because it matches the character the yellow eyes and blonde hair wouldn't work as that will make her weird they just want to make Joy a bit different computer the other emotions with yellow green and blue.

She can also be False Joy. Forcing Riley to have as many happy memories in the first movie as much as possible, even if they could have been ones other emotions could have taken ahold of
Also I agree with the user @Gridkeeperr assessment on how each emotion had a secondary color that builds on that emotion and connects it to another (Which is probably why at the end of the first movie, there were memories that were dual colors)
apart from the fact that shes the main character, i wonder why only riley’s emotions have hair colors matching their skin colors, as opposed to having like riley’s blonde hair

Joy doesn't get sad she gets despair, it's different also sadness has an opposite emotion of empathy.
I thought that since she was the FIRST emotion, her colors covered the newborns joy, sadness, and anger before the other emotions came into being.
Joy and Anxiety are the only ones who don't have matching skin and eye color. Which are also the two that were a main emotion in a movie.

I think its because of her name too, if she is just plain happiness then wouldn’t her name be happy or something else. I think joy perfectly describes being positive and glowing in a gloomy situation, so that’s why she’s glowing, has a different color palette, and has characteristics of sadness

My professor actually took part in the character design process of joy and in one of our classes she told us that in the beginning they were thinking about giving her blue flames as hair (i sadly dont remember the exacty reason, but i think because she is so energetic?), thats also one of the reasons why the hair stayed blue, they just kept that idea. That also explains the flame like shape of the hairstyle!
Its just a color palette guys. In color theory, blue is complimentary of. Orange/yellow. (Meaning opposite on the color wheel and goes well together) it makes the yellow pop more because of the contrast.
They had to make her hair blue because they didn't want her to be confused with tinkerbell

The title of the video essay is "Outside In," but I am aware that the actual movie is called Inside Out. The title was supposed to be something of a play on words, though it seems like my efforts might not have been as successful as I had hoped.

I disagree. Blue may have an association with sadness, but who looks at a beautifully blue sky feeling sad? I think blue is a more versatile emotional color than people think. Considering it's one of the most popular favorite colors, it can't carry only negatives.

I noticed that all the emotions also have eyes of the same color as their skin and hair, except joy who has blue eyes like her hair and anxiety who instead has eyes different from both her skin and her hair, she has green ones, maybe because she is the protagonist of the second film?
I’ve always been curious why Riley’s emotions are all different in design but every other character has emotions that look like the person they’re working with. Like why Riley’s Dad’s emotions all have a mustache and Riley’s Mom’s have glasses but Riley’s emotions look nothing like her ya know?

Good point. I think that Joy’s eyes are blue for a similar reason to her hair being blue. Joy’s blue eyes are another visual reminder that happiness or joy cannot exist without sadness.

@@Beaniskool Adding on, if you look at the original five's fits closer, you can see colors of other emotions. For example, Sadness' purple glasses are a hint of Fear, Fear's red tie is a hint of Anger.

I think she has depression because she is ALWAYS trying to be happy. And like the thing the happened in the second movie. She said “do you know how hard it is to stay happy all the time…” but if this is true, what about Riley?

I saw the title and I said"because she has to be happy she can't be sad or she is a burden in her mind like me......"...
In sumamry, and i hope many can agree with this, emotions are not simple, they are a much more complex and undefined, making the best way to understand them is by considering the whole and not just one of them, this is also possibly why sometimes people struggle in expressing their feelings (both god and bad), words are limited, you are not.

Those who say there can't be joy without sadness should watch BSD. A character named Ivan Goncharov had his brain tinkered so that he can't feel sadness anymore. He's one happy dude 😀
On a bit more serious note, you can interpret that statement with the joy and sadness coming from different people, making it seem like emotions are a zero sum game when it's not.

it snot just the hair its also the eyes. all of the emotions have same colour hair and eyes except for Joy AND Anxiety. Joy has blue hair and eyes and Anxiety has green eyes instead of orange. Its probably because they are both prominent emotions, Joy being number one and Anxiety is number 2

Okay but if they were trying to make her visually distinct from Tinkerbell, the green dress was an extremely counterproductive choice. The blue hair does the job anyway, but that dress would be _fantastic_ for a casual Tinkerbell cosplay.
