    Good tips. And to add to the cleat bolt tip, replace one of the disc rotor bolts with a cleat bolt. The disc rotor bolts are rounded and don't work great as cleat bolts but the cleat bolts work fine as rotor bolts. All my bikes have 2 cleat bolts mixed in with the rotor bolts so I am always ready.

    Nice one Barry ... my kit list is updated now 👍
    I also take a couple of pairs of the surgical latex type gloves 🧤 to put on when mechanicals happen .... keeps the hands grease free for food time 🥪 (these gloves also double up as another layer in winter and really help)

    Another great episode. Plenty of great tips there. I usually carry a small cut out from plastic bottle, ideal if you get a cut on the tyre to place inside the tyre and prevent tube protruding. I use squirt lube and find it great for mtb however I tend to clean chain frequently.

    • @barrygodin7538
      @barrygodin7538  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alan! Thanks very much, great idea! I have also used bits of plastic bottle of mend bags as well that have got worn through. Is Squirt lube the brand? is it any good?

    • @alandwyer380
      @alandwyer380 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@barrygodin7538 Yes Barry, Squirt Dry lube. Most good bike stores stock it. I've been using it for the last number of years for both mtb and road. People always comment on how clean my chain and cassette are.

  • @arcoulant87
    @arcoulant87 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Chapeau, my tip is to store your spare spokes in side your seat tube use a bit of foam to keep them in.and a 9 speed quick link will work on a 10 speed chain ,helped a roadie out when coming home from a mtb ride who broke a chain ,good enough to get him to a bike shop in Peaslake.

    • @barrygodin7538
      @barrygodin7538  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a cracking story Stephen! Feels amazing when you are carrying something that can really help some one else out. Oh while at the bike shop might as well pop in for a pasty :-) Great idea about keeping the spokes on the bike. Also lots of people tape a quick link to the gear cables so always with the bike.

    I always carry my Victorinox multi tool. It weighs half as much as the bike ! But was an absolute godsend when i came off and god knows how got a load of wire fence wrapped round my rear mech, the wire cutters made short work of it. Another good video Barry, thanks. Have to admit, I'd never heard of tyre boots before but they will be part of my kit now. Usually, if I get a piece of wire stuck in the tyre that I can't remove, or if the tyre itself has deformed, I use the tube patches to cover the area to help stop a re-puncture. Oh, I'm also going to buy a couple of mech hangers :)

    • @barrygodin7538
      @barrygodin7538  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome! So glad you found something in there helpful, Tyre boots are just a lot thicker and sticker than a tube patch. Oh and buy hundreds of mech hangers, haha, and don't forget to take at least one with you, no good being at home ;-)

  • @danrainsford8235
    @danrainsford8235 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for another great video, fully agree on the Topeak Mountain Morph, mines about 15 years old. I use tyre mounting paste (Twin Busch bought off ebay), applied to the bead of the tyre and the inside of the rim bead, pump tyres up to about 40psi so you get at least 2 if not 3 pops as the tyre sits on the rim. Leave them at that pressure overnight and then reduce to whatever you want to run them at. Even if you lose a valve core and all the air from the tyre the beads are still stuck to the rim.

    • @barrygodin7538
      @barrygodin7538  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much Dan, yeah what a pump! :-) You still got your foot on it? haha. Yeah to seat a tyre, no joke, I got given some anal lube (don't ask) and wow, if you want a tyre to go on easily, haha.
      No seriously good tips there, If i have a big issue on the trail I always try to lift the wheel off the ground of the bead doesn't break and then its often an easy fix

    Clearly not used any of your chain lube on that chain on the Genesis! Looks like that may be a bit seized up?!?! Cracking video though Barry, really like the "i'm just gonna see what's in here" approach to presenting.
    I have once lost a MTB cleat bolt, 1/2 way up the climb to the Brecon Gap in S Wales, just had to tighten the other one as hard as I could until I got to a bike shop about 10 miles later!
    I've also managed to use a 10spd quick link in a split 11spd road bike chain before, it wasn't nice and it made alot of noise, but it got me to the nearest bike shop (20 miles later). Interestingly the same shop as the cleat bolt above, good old Bikes & Hikes in Talybont on Usk!
    One thing maybe worth showing people, if your gear cable snaps (particularly rear mech), how to wind in derailleur limit screws to run the bike single speed. Had to do that for a few friends over the years so that they could carry on and not be in the biggest gear!

    • @barrygodin7538
      @barrygodin7538  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, just a keen eye, I hoping i was going to get away with that poor looking chain :-)
      So glad you liked my deep exploration into my little bag, haha.
      Yes you are so right, use any speed of chain link, I generally get that little bag out in any disaster and see what I can use to make it work enough to get somewhere! And great shout about how to adjust the rear mech with the limit screws, have done that so many times when the mech is bent.
      Thanks so much for your comment Matt!

    • @matt_brk
      @matt_brk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@barrygodin7538 Yep, I think I pulled my bag apart recently and found a 9spd, 10spd and 11spd chainlink in there. I can't remember when I last ran a 9spd drivetrain, so god knows where that one came from.
      It's also very worth knowing what tools are on your multitool, I once walked a few miles with a bent disc rotor that I couldn't straighten or take off because my multitool didn't have a T25. After several times of checking my multitool, it definitely didn't have a T25. Only to find out when I got home, that my multitool did, in fact, have a T25 that I could of taken the rotor off with! If I'd known my multitool at least I'd have been able to ride home (albeit without a rear brake!)

    • @innocentiuslacrim2290
      @innocentiuslacrim2290 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I went to check them out, looks interesting. How good are those regarding durability in real world? EDIT: Found some mixed reviews after searching. Some people like, others get leakages from valves immediately upon installing. Seems like it could be a great product for a backup tube once they get the QC sorted out properly. I would also say that it needs to work with standard patches as carrying a proprietary patch kit really eats into the weight and space savings and just feels like one more point of failure. For now I will stick with Continental/Michelin/Schwalbe tubes which I have good experiences with.

    • @barrygodin7538
      @barrygodin7538  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Rick! Yes I have, I have not used one yet, but a few friends have. Mixed reviews again, they defiantly solve the issue of weight and size, just reliability scares me a little. Also wouldn't want to tow some one along with one :-)
