'Socks everywhere' - glad its not just me that does that! I use socks and Buffs to pad things out and stop them rattling (Which I hate!). My experience is from motorcycle touring but I will be taking this into my cycle touring this year and its interesting to see which things seem to cross over. For many years now I have used Paramo outer layers, heavy but the most comfortable outers I have ever had. I even use them when I am teaching kids outdoor stuff (My job). Anothet great video Barry - keep em coming.

Haha, thanks so much! Yeah there is nothing like a dry clean pair of socks. It improves my mood so much, that is until the first puddle of sky opening up soaks them again , haha

Some good sound advice and tips Barry.
Small point, merino wool is not the best wicking clothing fabric. Many synthetic fabrics are better at wicking, but have poor or no anti microbial properties compared to merino wool meaning they stink after 1 or 2 days use where as merino you can wear for days or weeks without it stinking.
Regarding socks, you can still use layers on your feet. Try wearing a liner sock that wicks moisture away from your foot, helps keep your foot warmer in chilly weather, increases comfort and prevents blisters. I wear liner socks the whole time now when cycling or running. So much better. For cold conditions get an insulated winter boot such as Shimano MW80 Goretex winter boots with liner and mid layer sock. Mine winter boots are 10 years old and still going strong.
Your feet sweat even in cooler weather so using a totally waterproof membrane means your feet will get damp, not from water coming in but from sweat not being able to get out. Membranes are always a compromise. Gore-tex produces the best membranes on the market, but they still have their limitations.
Also check the stitching around the edge of the pad. Cheaper shorts the stitching can be very basic and soon fail on the edge of the pad meaning the pad is free to cause sores against your skin which can be very painful. More expensive pads tend to have better stitching around their edge although not always. Carry several pairs and keep yourself meticulously clean.
Agree with you on MTB baggy shorts especially touring off road riding, but not for road riding on a hot day, too much fabric and friction.

This is an incredible comment, thank you so much for spending the time to write it, and for watching my video in so much detail! Yes Merino is the best for smell, have worn the same top for over a week and got away with it :-)
I have winter boots on my list to get, and have not used a liner stock yet so would like to try that one!
      Thanks again Alex!!!!

Having had these videos while I was starting bikepacking would have been pure gold. I hope the "new generations" appreciate it as I would!
As far as I have experienced, I have come pretty much to the same conclusions. Except for merino wool, that I won't use for ethical reasons. Instead I'm trying some net shirts as base layer and it seems they can bring the sweat away from the body quite well.
Thanks a lot for your videos, Barry. I'm learning a lot and it's always a pleasure to hear you talk about bikepacking.

Hi Barry, Thanks for another good video and being upfront about Gore ambassador. I just thought you were a loaded Londoner decked out in it ;-)
Any tips for washing your shoes and reducing the odour, and drying tips for layers/socks etc when you've camped?
Rather than going to the expense of waterproof shorts I just bought a cheap pair of waterproof over-trousers and cut them down about 6" below the knee, I find grit and dirt soon cause waterproof shorts to lose their waterproofing.

    • @barrygodin7538
      @barrygodin7538  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Haha, I am quite the opposite to a loaded londoner ;-) Live in London as I was born here, and why do you think I go bike packing and wild camping if I was loaded :-)
Erm if this was smell-o-vision you might realise I'm not the best to ask about smelly shoes! just keep them in the porch of the tent, and the opposite end to you head
Great tip about Waterproof shorts, yeah they never last that long when you saddle turns to sand paper with all the grit and mud

I'm just starting out and I love these videos, but have a couple of questions if you don't mind.
    1. Is that long sleeved shirt at 8:02 also made out of merino wool?
If it's going to be raining all week (and your riding through branches), as you describe at 6:52, what exactly are you wearing then?
This is what I gathered from your video:
Base layer: padded lycra shorts + merino long sleeved shirt + knee warmers
Outer layer: Waterproof shorts + the thicker Gore jacket
    2. How cold can the temperatures for this setup to still work?
    3. If it gets too cold for this setup, what do you change? Do you ever use a mid-layer like a fleece?
    4. Your knee warmers get wet if it rains with this setup, correct? And your shins are completely exposed and uncovered?
    5. Is the thicker Gore jacket 2 layer, 2.5 or 3 layer? (I just learnt about these concepts) And how heavy is it?
    6. If you're wearing this thicker Gore jacket, how do you prevent your head from getting wet? Does the hood go over your helmet?
    7. 6:28, how can that Gore membrane be both a wind-stopper and breathable at the same time? Does wind-proof and breathable not contradict itself?
Sorry if those are too many questions! But thanks in advance for your help!

    • @barrygodin7538
      @barrygodin7538  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Toby! Of course please do ask questions :-)
      1. That top, in particular, is not, but normally also use a Helly Hansen which has a layer of merino wool. But all my riding t-shirts are Merino. So It is was not too cold, I would be wearing my merino t-shirt with a gore-tex waterproof over the top. Only in the depths of winter do I go to a long sleeve base layer.
What you have written is correct.
      2. Temperature-wise, I might then add a thicker mid-layer (between the base and outer) and this can get me below 0' and be comfy. But the risk there is not getting to warm you sweat too much, and standing still in those wet clothes when cold trying to fix something. So especially when it comes to eating in the cold, I do little and often, no long breaks when your core temperature can drop.
      3. Yes - answered a little above, but not normally a fleece, but there is now lots of mid-layers which can act as an outerlayer too as they have the properties of Windstopper, and still, you just add a waterproof layer over the top for elements or its colder. You need everything to have multiple uses and different was to wear them so you have a simple system for all-weather you might find.
      4. Yes my knee warmers get wet, but that has not been a problem. There are ones by castelli which have a waterproof property to them. Yes never had cold shins :-) But if they do rub some stinging nettles on them (only joking, or am I???)
      5. The shake dry is one layer, the goretex membrane, and the other is Goretex active so its 3 layers with the membrane sandwiched in the middle.
      6. Yes depends on the rain, If monsoon conditions then yes my hood goes up, but I often put it on and helmet on top. Not a great fashin tip, but means the hood moves with your head. Majority of the time I get a wet head.
      7. Oh, you would think so, but it is super clever, very very small holes. Go try one out and you will be mind blown :-)
I hope this is helpful, I have answered the best I can, and if you have any other questions, please let me know. Thanks for watching
