Rob actually has a degree in vocal performance. He's just a chameleon. They all are, really.
Rob spent 4 years training in opera, he can just sound like anything he wants; as far as Tim, when he sings this live, the lowest notes he sings just seem to drop out of him with no effort, no strain, no chin tucking, nothing. Absolutely amazing live!
The twang is Chance doing what is called a Jew's Harp. This is a very old country song from 1919 and they emphasized the country twang to pay homage to the earlier versions.
Or the more accurate name, jaw harp
Chance is the jaw harp or juice! Saw him do this in concert 2 wks ago! It's amazing! Love this song done the Home Free way!!!
When I hear Austin sing "Fare thee well, my own true loverrrrrr. . ." I hear all the choirmasters I ever had screaming to not close on the "r" too early. I'm glad Austin ignores that advice; I doubt it applies to bluegrass.
This was the first song, I heard with Home Free. And it got me hooked on them. Even my teenage nieces love them, especially their version of "Ring of Fire" 😁😁

My first Home Free song, too! I had no idea how deep the rabbit hole I was falling into. I took my daughter and her daughter to see them live in IN this past July 1st. They were hooked. I like your in-depth analysis.

As for the song, this is such an awesome rendition, this is my favorite one. Its a perfect mix of smoothness and grit.

Chris and Adam are brothers. They both started the group and Chris left several years ago. Then Adam Rupp is still there and does the beatboxing :)
Chris Rupp was the other founding member. Baritone. Up until about 2015, then he went on to other projects and they hit it big when they found Chance.

In this song Home Free is making a distinct southern (bluegrass) presentation--it definitely fits the lyrics of the song. Chance doing the jaw harp sound really sets the stage for this song's story, which Austin's twang fits phenomenally. Tim's bass line completely grounds the harmonies and Adam's voice percussion simply cannot be beat. This performance highlights a lot of Home Free's strengths although they also handle ANY other genre just as amazingly❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️

I watched a concert video of this song, and when Tim sang the word grave at the end of the second line when he dropped the bass, he didn't come back up like he did in the studio version. He dropped even lower into subharmonics. The whole place was shaking and everyone was screaming, of course.

YES, I've watched a ton of reactions to this video, I'm a bass, decent, a ton better after watching and learning from Geoff Castellucci's videos, That sudden octave drop gets overlooked in almost every video. That's my favorite part of the whole song lol, all of it is BRILLIANT, that little bass run is so sweet.

This was my first Home Free song too. I had heard Tim Foust a couple of times with Peter Hollens, but this was the first Home Free song, and I was hooked from the start. Singing along with Tim makes it SO much more fun... Anyway, one of the things that drives me crazy with many reactors is the way so many of them are fascinated by Tim's low voice in his solo, and they get to talking about it - right over the part where he drops another octave, and completely miss that part. Sometimes they notice, but often they don't seem to notice at all. (Home Free "megafans" are *Home Fries,* and Adam Rupp is the vocal percussionist - there you go!)
This song blew me away when I first heard it & I was completely hooked. These guys are all so talented. They are known for their tight harmonies. Tim Foust is one of the best bass singers out there. Did you notice the bass drop after his solo? Adam Rupp (beatboxer vocal percussionist) can simulate any sound such as drums & harmonica. Chance is making the jaw harp sounds. This song is very old & is done in the bluegrass country style. It was used in the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" starring George Clooney.
Chance is doing the overtones. I Can’t Outrun You is one of my Home Free favorites right now, and he has some nice bass features. I’d be interested to see you react to that!

In my whole life I have never favored a single band or singer. But for a good year now, I can't get away from these talented guys. Home Free - they are five extraordinary talents. This song is one of the first I heard from the guys and it took me a while to be sure - there is no harmonica :-) LOL

Home Free is so good. Yes, that was Chance doing the mouth harp sound. When Live he will do it on a looper as he says it hurts his voice too much. Also Austin will join in with Adam to do a harmonica Live. This song was made popular in the movie O Brother Where Art Thou but that was a cover too. The song is over 100 years old. Good reaction and analysis Peter.😃

I've gotten old so I can say those things!😊 This song was my introduction to Home Free & they're the only a cappella group I care about! It isn't just due to their incredible talent, arrangements & performances! It's their humility, generosity & just plain goofiness & respect & care for each other & their fans that make them unique! I particularly enjoy the bass voice, and the ability of an artist to have a particular timbre. As you mentioned, you know a Tim voice, Geoff, Avi, JD Sumner without looking. So cool.
This was the second song I heard from Home Free (first was Ring of Fire) Home Free is incredible. Everything they do is great. And although they are a Country A-cappela group, they can really sing all genres. They really all have great voices with their own specialties. I think you are right about Rob that he is not trained.
Adam Rupp is for me the best vocal percussionist/mouth artist

The best harmony, no egos, no rivalries, great personalities etc. Besides, they can all beatbox (see their live performance 9to5).

This was also the first song of Home Free that I heard and sent me down the Rabbit Hole. It's introduced me to many hours of pleasurable listening & to the other guys & groups you mentioned- Avi, Geoff & Voice Play. Will check out your guys too. Chance, the baritone, is doing the mouth harp. He came from Streetcorner Symphony where he was the bass singer (they have an actual bass now Armand Hutton). So now Chance can cover bass so Tim isn't stuck as an instrument the whole time.
Chris Rupp was their baritone along with his brother Adam Rupp as beatboxer founding members.
Austin did study musical theater.
Note - you forgot Avi in your list of things to do. To avoid "being beaten with a wet noodle" 😁 please listen to Avi's new album. Some very interesting songs in there all over the place in his full range.

From what I understand Chance was using Mongolian throat singing techniques to create the mouth harp twang and vibration.
Chris & Adam Rupp were founders of group
Had auditioned 2xs for 'Sing Off'
Interim had lost 2 members of active group bringing in Austin & Tim as replacements.
Home Free had been part-time doing gigs in a circuit. Tim had worked with them previously. He didn't want to move to MN. Tim had also worked on cruise ships in past. Home Free decided to go full time & had hired Tim as a replacement. They were booked on a cruise ship & ran into Austin who replaced another member.
Auditioned 3rd time with Austin & Tim & accepted. Won that season, also competed with VoicePlay.
Met Pentantonix during competition (previous year's winner). They & also in that season did a tour, also how met Adam Chance (was in another group) & later joined them when Chris Rupp left group. Chris has a YT channel. Has videos explaining the beginnings of Home Free & stories of tours.

Love this one! I think that easy, could-do-this-all-day sound is a big part of what makes it so enjoyable for me. It sounds so clean and so utterly sure-handed that it's reassuring to listen to, somehow, while also having some swagger, and just being really impressive even without any super vocal pyrotechnics. Like, this is just a rock-solid cover, in the best way.
A bit surprised you didn't mention the little yodely sounds at the end of a few of Austin's phrases, just because you mentioned the grit, and usually do comment even on those small things. I aways appreciate the discussion and demonstrations of the different ways of producing sound (Tim's more forward and bright vs Avi being low-larynx and warm), and also the behind-the-scenes production stuff. Well done, and thank you!

I agree, well worth the attention. One of the things that struck me most about Peter's analysis today was his ability to identify and echo riff patterns. The section where he sang/fingered Austin's riffing up a few notes and then riffing back down an octave made me shake my head in wonder. Amazing!

Awesome analysis! This song was my introduction to Home Free back in 2020 thanks to a reaction by QoFyReacts. I appreciate the time you take in breaking it all down. Don't worry about getting names mixed up... it comes right back like riding a bike. I'm a huge fan of the Bass Gang. My favorite so far of the two albums is "Mad World". Elliott Robinson is a legend to me. I hope you get to do more collaborations with him in the future.

Hearing these breakdowns is soooo helpful! 🙏💕😍 As someone just beginning to learn how to sing, I never understood how much technical knowledge really goes into vocal music!
I heard ppl say "your voice is an instrument" but I thought they just meant, it plays music so you need to care for it like an instrument.
I never realized it works the same as an instrument, in that as a vocalist you "play" your vocal chords in different ways to make them do different things.
As someone who played clarinet in Jr. High, this makes so much more sense to me! I never knew about things like ear training and intervals, I knew written theory and how to READ music but I never learned how to LISTEN to music.
Now that I've started ear training, listening to breakdowns like these is very beneficial! As you discuss these elements in the vocals, I begin to notice them and what used to sound like unidentified chaos to me, as a person on the Autism spectrum, now starts to finally make sense.
Our ears take in so much and when it all jumbles together in the brain, for some of us, it can be very overwhelming when we can't tune it out (like Dolores in Encanto).
Having the knowledge to properly identify what I am hearing, is so great because when I can focus on the sounds separately and how they work together, it's not as overwhelming anymore.
It's like the difference between the way waves sound on the beach when you are trying to hear them, versus when they are just background noise. One experience is hectic, the other is soothing!
You and all the others in your field, providing these breakdowns, probably don't realize what a great service you are providing! This knowledge is entirely life changing for anyone with sensory issues.

I love & identify 100% with what you said here, that learning about the different parts of music really helps me "make sense of the chaos". I have never agreed with the feeling that "learning too much about something kills the magic"-for me, learning to appreciate many aspects of a complicated subject makes it more amazing! I feel I understand it more rather than being overwhelmed by details 🤓

Love the commentary as usual! I was first introduced to this song listening to Bob Dylan's first album. It is based off an older folk song. The arrangement made for Brother, Where Art Thou, and this arrangement make me fall in love with the song over and over again!

One of the first I heard from Home Free, and I love it!
The first few sounds (Adam doing the jaw harp and Rob doing his part) are recorded on a looper. You hear it thru the whole song. Same way they did Edd Sheeran's "Castle on the Hill". Both sound great!

My favorite low tenor is Chris Rupp, Adam Rupp’s brother. The vocals during Adam Rupp’s arrangement of Do You Hear What I Hear are my favorite HF vocals.
Happy 4th! I love you bass reactions. Tim does have that light/dark voice-- Chiaroscuro. You seem to have it as well. Sounds like frying all the time but not. Avi can go low as well but his does sound more muddied or muddled. You speak a lot like how Tim speaks. Your resonance is awsome... Have a great rest of the day.
You can find a lot of off-mic videos from some of their concerts that showcase their amazing projection skills, namely How Great Thou Art, Helplessly Hoping, and Auld Lang Syne. Definitely worth a listen.

The first sounds are Adam Chance (baritone/bass) performing throat sounds. Live they use live looping for that and the "dos" part.
Chance is making the twang/mouth harp sound going into and out of the song.

As I started to listen to your analysis, I think I had the notion you were more interested in impressing me/us with insights about you than with highlighting the performers' competence or lack thereof. But not too far into this it was great to hear you slip (very knowledgeable) insights about the performers & performance, relevant recording process, comparisons to other artists, and any number of great insights into your observations. Yours is the most understandable reaction video I’ve seen that talks about the different voices & techniques used in the recording. There is just so much going on in the song with all the various performers, I wonder that no one has divided out the audio tracks for each one so they can be appreciated on their own. Maybe it’s illegal, Idk, but I’d love to hear every line separated out. 🥰
