I just feel the song really connects with the game. All the aspects of it. Sad, cold, depressing, tense, fear all of these expressions can be illustrated from this song and that’s what makes it magical.
And yet... there is a thread of energy, hope and spite in there. Because even though you are cold and lonely and hungry, your heart still pumps and your lungs still breathe. And until that changes... there is a chance.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Don't get me wrong. The new soundtrack for the main menu is amazing, emotional and impactful. But this theme, wintermute. Is a theme that makes you feel the chilling cold as your character slowly succumbs to hypothermia, it makes you feel every single hair standing on your neck when a wolf howls in the distance. It makes finding that Stale Granola bar, tin of banged up peaches, or that rotten deer carcass so much more rewarding when your character is starving to death. Wintermute has been MY soundtrack for this game since the very VERY beginning. Back when The long dark was still in preview. "You might be cold, you might be lonely. But what you are....... is a survivor of the quite apocalypse"
This song was actually my only song I saved to my desktop a few years back (with a shortcut on the main screen) when the game was just out of early access and I really wanted to save it
For the past year, I've been obsessed that this track and "The Dunwich Borer" from Shadows Over Loathing have the same melody. I'm obsessed with both tracks and they portray the melancholy of hopelessness in such different ways. Fantastic work to both composers fr
Genuinely one of the most iconic tracks in gaming. Yes, there's hundred of orchestras and epic battle music. I love those, but so rarely is there this feeling of dread; failing; despair; and melancholy, and it's all wrapped in less than three minutes. I haven't heard anything like it since.
I legit cannot believe it has been 5 years from the launch of wintermute, i literally was like 10 or 11 when it dropped out and now im 15 listening to this masterpiece again
This is the theme music of somebodies death. It perfectly captures the futile desperation of the lost survivor, waiting for the fire to burn out, the last food to be eaten, for the first touch of hypothermia, or the bite of the wolf.... knowing that one of these will come, sooner or later...
God, its been so long since I last started up the game. I remember though the first time I stumbled across the games big town in open sandbox. Seeing it so vacant was just so eerie. Later, when I played the story mode version and met the old woman, seeing her turned over chair and gun on the ground in sandbox sent shivers down my spine....

Playing this game for 5 years. I remember when Mystery Lake was all there was. Pretty cool to see where it's gone. This theme will stick around however!
The first few seconds really does set you into the mood immediately… you’re cold, alone, and you don’t know how you’ll make it to the next day. As it goes on and the music becomes more tense, it really does sound like a fight for survival like you need to find somewhere to take shelter or you’re trying to hide from a pack of wolves. It also captures the natural beauty of the game as well, with its giant lakes and forests.
At 2018 I discovered the long dark , I watched the trailer and fell in love with the soundtrack, I wanted to get the game so bad , but I had a potato pc, i had to wait for 2020 summer to buy a capable pc, and I was so eager to play the game and listen to the soundtrack myself. Never more had a theme from a game given me more of an image of pure hopelessness and hope at the same time. Its absolutely breathtaking and awestriking. Never before in a game have I felt that the actions I do are next to meaningless and that all I'm doing is prolonging the inevitable, while at the same time being so hopeful and reinvigorating to fight and claw for my survival for just a few more hours. The Long Dark, since my first time playing it in early access, has been the only game to get such a pure and intertwined connection with the character I play as in survival. Never more have I been so immersed in fighting for my life and never more has there been a theme to perfectly and effortlessly become that link to connect me to such an amazing game. The trouble with him was that he was not able to imagine. He was quick and ready in the things of life, but only in the things, and not in their meanings.
