    James, GREAT videos. I have learned so much just from watching these. Since starting to view these I have got up the nerve to attack issues in my own small engine fleet. Using one of your videos, I completely tuned up my snowblower that has been neglected for the past three years. Tried to clean the carb but it was pretty nasty, purchased a new one and installed it. Runs like a champ. Replaced a carb on my Generac XG8000E that had a stuck float bowl. Tore that apart two years ago and just left it. Saw a few of you videos and finished the job. Also replaced the dead battery on it and it runs great. Two projects left. Currently tore apart a PowerBack Generator with a 10 hp B & S engine. Mice had gotten in the wiring. Replaced a blown head gasket, new coil, new carb, new gasket kit for the fuel pump, new kill switch, new air cleaner, new fuel filter, new gas and oil change. She starts and runs but has a constant hunt and surge issue. This is foreign to me. Not sure where to start but will be working on it. Lastly, have a push mower with a B & S engine that needs some care. Should be loading that on the bench after I fix this hunt and surge issue with the PowerBack. Thanks for putting out all these videos. You Da MAN!!

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to hear. If the PowerBack has a Techumseh engine, see this video th-cam.com/video/tzE9c9g-7es/w-d-xo.html starting at 22:13. They do not have a anti lash (anti surge) spring. Adding one could make the difference. Otherwise a carb issue.

      @@jcondon1 Not a Tecumseh engine. Flat head 10hp B &S. Added new carb, still surges. Tried adjusting the mixture screw and the idle screw. Still surges. Tightened up scant amount of slack in governor. Still surges. Ordered the micro drill bit set from Amazon, arrives Saturday. Going to drill out the jet. If it still surges after that I'm going to take it out back and shoot it.

    • @jladdgolden5398
      @jladdgolden5398 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      James, The micro drill bits came in and I finally had a chance to take apart the carb on Sunday. Did it just like you suggested. I was a bit nervous about snapping off one of those micro drill bits in there. After drilling out the hole, I put it all back together, fired it up and she purrs like a kitten. Thanks again for putting out all your videos on generator and small engine repair. Keep up the great work and thanks again for all your help.

    I want to thank you so very much. Went to fire up my snowblower this year to get it ready for the winter and the stupid thing wouldn't start thanks to your diagnostic skills I use a little break clean to confirm that I had compression and Spark which I expected I should because it's only 2 years old but I tend to have trouble with mice. I run stabilized ethanol-free fuel through all of my small engines the carburetor internally looked absolutely brand new but there was a small ball or what look like Snot stuck in the main jet. Thanks to your videos I knew exactly what to do I had a diagnosed in under 5 minutes had it apart fixed and put back together in under an hour

    It was cool to see how fast the governor reacted to each of the heaters being turned on. Not all of them are that quick and smooth. Maybe one of these days I'll finally fix the hunting issue on my old Homelite/Briggs generator. I've always had to leave the choke on slightly, or it runs exactly like this one did before the repair. It runs great otherwise, and the speed is right on.

    I put grease on the axels before I put the wheels on my generator. I used regular old tub wheel bearing grease. I also plumbed up an oil drain, so it extends past the frame, so I can drain the oil out without it getting all over the frame. I used 1/4 inch NPT nipple and a 90 degree elbow with pipe thread compound on the threads. The original plug goes right back in the end of the elbow. I have done this on lots of equipment in the past.

    The two things I despise about these generators, oil drains all over the frame and carb gets interference from the frame, making propane conversion a pita. When I was a lot younger, I thought CAD was going these kinds of problems. And then things got worse, at least on cars. They became able to get consistency so good, that they could guarantee you'd have a 1/16" too little clearance space, on every manufactured unit. ;) I have a small drawer with my "custom" harley tools, that were once good tools, but now they fit for things like 1" long allen head intake manifold bolts that have 1/4" of space to back out, once you loosen them with a "custom" tool.

    Informative repair. If bolt torque value is important, I'd avoid the use of extentions which will change torque as extentions will twist and cause a false reading.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. These bolts are not critical. Just trying to torque them in a consistent manner.

    • @vx-iidu
      @vx-iidu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They may twist, but I don't think the twisting will cause a false reading. Imagine an extension made out of rubber that's very long. Even when the rubber twists, you'll still feel the same torque on your end as on the bolt end.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The generator will run without it, but it will probably surge. It is meant to take the plan out of the linkage. There is a little hole on the carburetor near where the throttle rod connects and another large slot on the governor arm next to wear the rod attaches for the other end.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      More often then not the stator or rotor has failed. The 3.8 volts is residual magnetism in the rotor. The rotor is not powering up. Either bad brushes, bad AVR or a problem in the stator with the excitation winding (DPE winding).

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of the Honda clone generators have cheap $40 tanks available on eBay. So usually go with that. Otherwise tanks can be $200-$400 dollars if they are available at all. I have used evaporate to clean up a few tanks, but it takes at least a week to work and can only do so much. If I ever get one that I cannot fix or replace then would add a fuel pump for an external tank or convert to propane, but always check the tank before buying. They are not worth much without a stock tank.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Does it run any better when adding choke? If so then maybe your main jet is not letting enough fuel through. Surging is normally caused by running lean. Could also have a gasket issue between the carb and engine or maybe the governor spring is too close to the governor shaft making the governor oscillate. 99% if the time it is running lean.

    • @alexfannick1515

I think I messed up the fuel air ratio by not using the original filter. Should i use the original one? Thanks for your opinion.

If you jump on their offer they wonder if you would have paid more, it eats people up. If you ever have to deal with them again, they'll have it in the back of their minds that you screwed them over. Subaru makes very good engines. Comparable to Honda in my opinion.

      @@jcondon1 I'm inclined to agree re their car engines. You are the small engine guru so I'm happy they put the same effort into their small engines too

    I don't understand why not clean the outside of the carb.. Why leave dirt and grease on it.. I like your videos but would love them if you spent a minute to clean completely.. Honestly drives me crazy me crazy and i am sure i am not alone

      All the dirt and grease was off. Just corrosion left. No amount of cleaning will get that off.
