This isn’t a weird guitar at all. It sounds wonderful and I think it sounds better, and plays nicer, than a regular guitar with a capo on the 12th fret.
Its a great instrument! We used to have two in our guitar ensamble, they doubled guitars 1 and 2 and it added really cool colour to the sound, favourite piece we played with was Pavanne for dead princess from Ravel:)
I agree. It sounds utterly beautiful, with a smooth and rich yet light and airy tone. And can we all just agree on how beautifully melodic that closing music was? Wow.
That’s due to the intonation being better. As you move up the neck, the intonation tends to shift out of tune. It’s part of having equal temperament. We just live with it and adjust it as best as we can but it’s still there.
looks like the 12 string one has the three high strings in unison and the 3 low strings in octaves. I kind of expected it to be all unison strings like a mandolin. Cool either way though.
@@Jasontheguitarist87 you could always replace the 3 octave strings with different gauge strings and tune it in unison. I know the intonation would be slightly off and the nut slots might be different but it would be easy enough to make it work reasonably well
Regarding playing it in your lap, the horn by the tailpiece is there to support it on your right leg, and if you sit with your left leg slightly higher the other horn by the neck fits right onto that leg. Source: A mandolin player who isn't very good Also, this thing sounds kind of amazing, it's a perfect hybrid between the mando and guitar sound. It doesn't just sound like a guitar tuned up an octave, it seems like the mandolin body shape gives it a lot of the characteristic timbre of the mandolin.

I'm surprised that the oldest record you had of one of these is from 2012. There's a lot of these hybrid instruments it there that are MUCH older. My father-in-law has a 100-year old Gibson mandolin-banjo, and the Ukulele-banjo was popular in the 1930s. Brian May played one for the Queen song '39 if I recall correctly.
It’s not too dissimilar from the manditar that Barney Kessel infamously used on various sessions, including the iconic “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” intro, or the Vox Mandoguitar which was used on a variety of classic tunes, including Big Star’s “September Gurls”
What a great idea! If you want to get an even more “authentic” mando sound, run it through a chorus pedal to give you that double-string effect. I’m kind of surprised you don’t see more of these. I’ve never been much of a ukulele fan but I do love the sound of a mandolin in Celtic Rock and while I don’t play mandolin, I could see myself playing one of these.
As a musician on a tight budget, I've always looked at the mando-guitar and dreamed from afar. I have played a couple and really enjoyed myself. It, to me, feels like just a sort of extremization of the requinto guitar or guitarlele, which you know is tuned up a fourth rather than an octave, yet it may still have been an inspiration. Also, as a mandolin player, I would love to play melody and countermelody with a mandolin and the mando-guitar. Unfortunately, I'm also between mandolins right now, having given mine to a friend passionate about the instrument. Anyway, I'm glad you did a video on this fantastic instrument, which is versatile and beautiful.

Unfortunately, for the same reason doing actually useful chords on a soprano is a bit challenging.
This really adorable Soprano Guitar has a Zero Fret built into the nut to make it playable. It uses a Mandola Body so that the lower pitches resonate. It's a modern version of the Spanish Bandurria (12 String 6 Course Mandolin tuned in Fourths). The 12 String Version of this instrument has a true Mandolin sound with the 6 pairs of Strings, the 3 treble courses are in unison, and the 3 bass courses are in Octaves which balances out the low and high end.
Ohhhh I kinda prefer it to mandolin! Sometimes the string doubling sounds janky at that range but I guess you need those for volume in the higher register, so now we have pickups it's less of a need. Cool vid :)

I suspect this is significantly easier to play than a standard mandolin. Namely the string tension and how much the double strings just tear up your fingers.
this is why I play a Gretch tuned to C at 5ths all the way up for rhythms, and a les paul tuned "normal" for leed at F and a mandolin tuned normally for those high notes.
Thank you for your absolutely touching words, your message really moved me. I was just expecting to watch a normal video and found this comment, "Nut". Seeing the thumbnail I thought you were gonna play the mandalorian theme on a mandolin and a guitar but you know what. Im still glad I watched this video!
i'm surprised at how nice that sounds. actually close to a mando sound but without the coursed strings. these things should be more common! would be a really nice way to round out an acoustic ensemble
I have an instrument called an octaophone. It looks like a gigantic mandolin and apparently can be used as a different instruments. A violin,a mandolin, a ukulele, A bass ukulele, guitar a bass guitar And I don’t remember the others. but I can’t find any strings for it. And I believe it was only made for a short period of time by a company in Chicago that went out of business years ago.
Many of the earliest doublenecks in the 1950s had necks tuned an octave higher. There were also 12-strings tuned an octave higher produced by Vox in the 1960s. Brian Jones used one. There's also an acoustic octave 12-string used for The Beach Boys' "Wouldn't It Be Nice", which seems to have been a custom Gibson.
I just thought I'd ad Sammy G's particular mandolin looks to be modelled on am Irish design (appropriate as I'm writing the comment on Paddy's Day). The Irish mandolin/bouzouki style instruments tend to favour the teardrop shaped body whereas the Mandotar used features the more traditional bluegrass shaped body.. interestingly though Sammy's mandolin has the Irish teardrop shape but also has the bluegrass style F holes. Looks like a lovely instrument. Would love to hear some samurai mandolin playing.
Alex Chilton used a Vox Mandotar for the solo on "September Gurls". It's what gives the part it's distinctive chiming ringing sound. The mandoguitar is not the world's most versatile instrument but in the right situation it can be incredibly effective.
Gold Tone also makes a 12 string version, where all pairs are in unison like a mandolin- I am seriously considering one of these. I did end up getting Gol Tone's Microbass, 24" scale bass with a body similar to an acoustic guitar. Their entry into the U-bass category. Along those lines, have you tried a guitalele? Ukulele sized guitar tuned up to A, like a capo on the 5th fret. I got Yamaha's version, it's a lot of fun, and makes for a great travel instrument.
Although the +1 octave guitar concept has been around for quite some time, for example: 1981 Robin Octave Double Neck that Stevie Ray used to play with his brother Jimmie Vaughan, it sure sounds good as an acoustic mandolin style. That octave range acoustically, sure does stir the emotions.
Beautiful playing sir. Thank God for your talent and great video Inspiring and educational. Love that avoiding copyright section laughing and you are just getting going You really play this Musical manditar fantastic
Man, I wish you'd shown different pedals like distortion, chorus, or flange and tuned the instrument down to try and sound like a real guitar as well or tried different tunings. i'm surprised at how nice that sounds. actually close to a mando sound but without the coursed strings. these things should be more common! would be a really nice way to round out an acoustic ensemble
Ah yes, the classic Korg Miku and mandolin combo!
Beautiful playing and you are well spoken with great voice.
I can't hear anything wtf
Turn your sound up

PERHAPS YOU ARE COMPLETELY DEAF.
Man, That shade thrown at the stock audio used in 5 minute crafts and stuff made me laugh
That piece you played at the end was so great!
Paul Bigsby built a 5 string mandolin in 1953. Sounds very similar to this Gold Tone. And YES, it has a Bigsby vibrato mounted.
The song at the end is very pleasing to my ear! Now I want one👍
Thank God for your talent and great video
Inspiring and educational.
Love that avoiding copyright section laughing and you are just getting going
You really play this
Musical manditar fantastic
I finally got one of these. It really is a lot of fun. Now next on my list is a 6 string banjo, a guitaralale and a Bass VI (for the low end).😊
The Mando-Guitar came from the Spanish Bandurria which is a 12 String 6 Course mandolin tuned in Fourths.
Man, I wish you'd shown different pedals like distortion, chorus, or flange and tuned the instrument down to try and sound like a real guitar as well or tried different tunings. It would've been cool to hear what a capo sounded like on it as well...
I enjoyed the video!
Maybe you could do a part 2 someday?
Great video, i love it! Sammy G always makes me chuckle. Now i want a mandotar...
Beautiful tone! It seems to fill a useful niche. Thanks!
Wow I love that last song the melody was beautiful!!!!! Keep up that work. Wow that guitar sounded good.
Check out the instrument Keller Williams plays when he's with the Keels if you're into this sort of thing.
Strange use #9 cracked me up :D well done!
