    I love these small operations like this. You don't have to have a big production mechanized outfit to get out there and do great timber work! You are correct Jody, it's not if you get hurt, it's when. I have been cutting for over 30 years, and I can relate...lol Once you get the saw chips in your blood it's hard to get them out.

    Interviewer did a great job. Asked questions so people who don't know the industry could get informed. Thank you.

    I bought a new Treefarmer back in 68, i was 20 yrs old. I got $11. for Aspen pulpwood loaded on railroad car and $18. for 8' Aspen saw bolts. There was a tree length mill in Deer River that payed $9. a cd delivered. When i worked alone i did it the same way. When you work alone its called working with a skeleton crew. I usually had a tree faller and a landing man and of coarse a skidder operator. With a 3 man crew we pulled 30 cds of Aspen a day.
    I got my neck broke back in 89, I'm typing from my bed with one finger, i'm a quad now.

      Duane.....I'm sorry to hear this. It's a very dangerous trade. I cut pulp in Georgia about 50yrs ago. Got smacked around pretty good a couple of times but was lucky I guess. My partner's Dad was killed in the woods from a cutter dropping a huge pine on him. I'm an old man now and look back on that time with mixed emotions. I wish you well sir.

    They also are referred to as armyworm you could drive down the road and hear them popping under your car tires and you would actually slide on them on your hit the brakes to hard. I moved to bangor back in 89 and I’m still here today, I miss living up home with my huge family but I wanted to get away from working in lumber mills after losing a finger and busting many of bone’s back then. Keep up the good work folks

    Great insights from an experienced operator. My only question is, your saw only lasts you a year? Holy smokes dude, I Logged on the family farm, and seasonally for a previous company for years using the same saws, only had to rebuild one of them. Guess it depends on running hours, maintenance, and what type of wood you are usually in. My 390 XP is a tank.... Great footage though!

Do few things little diff but NOT rocket Science but i think the guy was articulate enough in the skid it was good enough shape i call that a win for conventional loggers For the most part I bet he didn't know he was going to be a news reporter that day I'll make sure an invoice that guy probably 10 ton. Haha least he held ya up dam near mud season crist

    I have to laugh, he says skidders and chain saws are less damaging to the environment than feller bunchers, in my day 50 years ago the thinking was that horses were less destructive than skidders!

  • @STEAMBOLTANNIE
    @STEAMBOLTANNIE 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    JUST PULL IT OUT OF THE BUSH WITH THE SKIDDER AS YOU DONT REALLY NEED TO LIMB A SPRUCE IN THE WINTER AS THE BRANCHES WILL SNAP OFF BECAUSE THEY ARE FROZEN. = TIME SAVER $$$
