  • I go over two questions sent in by a subscriber. One involves finding the area of a segment and the other is a tricky compound shape.
    Thanks for 1000 subscribers!

    This was so interesting to see which methods you'd choose!
    For the second question, I actually did it another way (which I found much quicker). If you do 24 / 8 = 3 this gets you the hypotenuse of a mini-triangle (by mini triangle, I mean the diagonal you'd get if you split each of the bigger squares into four smaller ones).
    Then, if you use Pythagoras, the sides of the mini square have length of three root two over two. To get the area of a mini-square, if you square the length of three root two over two, the area of a mini square is 4.5. Then, if you count that there are 22 mini squares, 4.5 x 22 = 99. That's how I worked it out, anyway.
    Thanks for these videos, keep up the good work!

      Well explained videos. Sorry about you tube and being taken down but it is typical to use laws to stop teachers helping pupils understand a subject. It is like saying no one should demystify our little tricks. Maths is for the elite who do not need this help. You are a teacher at heart, love your subject and want to inspire and engender that love in others. Sadly this is exam board thinking ie defensive and short sighted only seeing the narrow aim of assessment..

    Would there be any way you could upload the videos to google drive and provide a link to it in one of your videos? They are incredibly helpful and have revolutionized the way in which I've revised maths. I would love if you were able to keep this up!

    I got the second one but I found the first one really difficult. Now I have seen the method to use it seems really easy but sometimes knowing how to approach a problem is the hardest part.

    Hello sir. I just tried this one and did it the following way. Diagonal length of one square is 24/4=6cm. If we cut one square in to quarters this forms a right angled triangle with length and height of 3cm. The area of which is 1/2x3x3= 9/2cm2. There are 22 quarters in the pattern. 22x9/2=99cm2. It's quite a simple method for 5 marks but gets the same answer as yourself.

    Even if you don’t know area of a sq is (d^2)/2 you know both diagonals are the same within a square and the square can be halved into a triangle and since there are two triangles in one square, you just do base x height = 6cm x 3cm = 18cm^2

  • @saferehman8234
    @saferehman8234 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    For the second I just seperate into half squares (so became triangles) and there were 8 so 24/8 is 3 - ik it’s more complex and useless but got the answer

    Thank you sir for the videos they are an amazing aid to revision. With regards the copyright strike this is quite common with people who upload videos but this is the first time I've heard of this happening with exam videos. Now that Edexcel have started this I assume the other exam boards will follow suit. You could try several things. Firstly, contact Edexcel at the highest level and persuade them to allow you to do so on the basis of fair use. If they decline you can always publish their response and contact the media and allow the public backlash to change their position. Alternatively you can upload all your videos to a file sharing site like mega and provide links where students can still access your videos. Hopefully this can be resolved with Edexcel and it's just some over-zealous bureaucrat getting ahead of himself.

    • @maths.explained
      @maths.explained  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting you say that. I did contact Edexcel. The reason is that schools want to use the papers as mocks, so it’s a reasonable explanation. I just wished they had asked me to take them down, rather than using a copyright strike. The problem is that there are many other videos out there covering the exact same papers, so why they just targeted me I don’t know.

    On the first one, surely to find out the area of a non right angled triangle it’s 1/2 (a x b) x sin c, not half base times height?

    • @maths.explained
      @maths.explained  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have the height of the triangle so you don’t need to use 1/2absinC. You only need to use it if you don’t have the perpendicular height

    Is this a calculator test

  • @rock5794
    @rock5794 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    for the first question, couldn't u have just calculated both areas of circle using the radius and pi r squared. then minus the areas to find the unshaded area of the small circle. then minus that from the full area. i think that should work?

    • @maths.explained
      @maths.explained  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Minus what area? I’m not sure that’s working

    • @rock5794
      @rock5794 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the area of the large circle can be calulated by the radius given on the graph which is 5. and then pi*r^2 (pi times r squared) to get the area of the large circle. then the radius of the small circle is given as 3 so the area can be calculated by pi r squared again . then you minus the area of the large circle from the small circle. then minus the area of the small circle with what u just took away from the previous minus.

      RocksLikeA13055 no that would not work because the shaded area is not from the diameter, but it is a curve instead, therefore you're way would not work
