2022 Infiniti QX55 | Review & Road Test

  • For the latest Infiniti QX55 pricing and information:
    www.kbb.com/infiniti/qx55/
There is quite a bit of this that will feel a bit familiar, but that doesn’t include the looks. Take it all in, and you can use your eyes to review it. This is Infiniti’s jump back into the fastback SUV segment they’re staking a claim on inventing with the amazing FX.
My opinion, this is kind of a hot little number. Especially in Infiniti’s version of candy apple red. You can see it’s got more of a sporty fastback look, which is very hot in the luxury SUV segment now.
And with a competitive set like the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, Land Rover Evoque, and Audi Q5 Sportback, you’d better be looking pretty dope. Wow, that’s a tough group of adversaries.
All -wheel drive comes standard on the QX55.
Overall the ride feels comfortable as you’d expect, nay hope in a luxury people mover. Standard mode feels like a great road trip setting.
In Eco mode, the throttle mapping gets pretty stingy, as you’d expect, but in sport, it gets a zippy quality to it. You can feel the suspension firm up a bit. I really feel a difference between the drive modes and that’s a great thing. With some manufacturers, they’re too subtle.
The steering feels a little light for someone looking for true performance or sporty driving chops. That being said there are different steering settings and it firms up. I’ve got it in Dynamic+ and that really firms things up which I like a lot.
The brakes get the job done very well, which is really what you want, right?
And around turns, well, that extra grip with the all-wheel-drive actually puts power down with confidence. And the turning radius is awesome. This thing feels like it's just spinning around its center axis. The QX55 is a solid, and enjoyable ride.
The drive train in the QX55 is also familiar. It gets a CVT, which you know my feelings about, but the one Infiniti and Nissan employ is genuinely improving with each new iteration. The 4-cyliner variable compression turbo engine is one we’ve seen and liked. It makes good power, (268 horses) and except for a little lag doesn’t disappoint when you’re looking for a boost of get up and go.
The place where I see the QX55 struggle the most is in the drivetrain department. If they’re going up against the BMWs and Mercedes this just lacks the performance, and refinement, and even elegance that those guys have. Even with additional sound dampening materials in the cabin, it can be quite loud.
But you are paying a lot less, so for the styling that could be a sacrifice you’re willing to make.
For a truer sporty driving experience, another transmission option from Infiniti would have been nice.
One area where the QX55 does kick butt is safety and technology, which is great because visibility is a little tough with the sloped roof and thick C-Pilar.
VO: ProPilot Assist comes on the second-highest trim, called the Essential ($51,600) On that trim level you also get LED headlights, navigation, leather seats with heating and ventilation, and some premium sound equipment from Bose.
The highest, Sensory trim, comes in around $57,050 and gets your open-pore wood trim, tri-zone climate control, and a motion-activated liftgate.
The base Luxe trim gets you a ton of things standard, which you’d expect to pay a lot more for in a competitor.
Let’s start with this dual-screen 8- and 7-inch setup that also features standard wireless Apple CarPlay.
Other standard equipment (Base Price: $46,500) includes a power moonroof, heated front seats, active noise cancellation, and a bunch of active safety features including forward emergency braking, rear automatic braking, land departure warning, and rear cross traffic alerts.
    '
So one consideration on an SUV with a roof that slopes like this is interior space. I’m feeling good upfront, and even in the back seat, I don’t get a super cramped feeling. I like the recline in the seats a lot.
Cargo space seems pretty voluminous. Infiniti claims it’s class-leading.
It’s small in stature but the QX55 swings big. If a more luxurious SUV is something you’re looking for, then Infiniti has made your decision a little bit tougher. Dancers and funky music not required.

When Beverly Hills Infiniti dealership closes the brand is in serious trouble. They are pulling out if Europe and will probably get folded into Nissan. This is too little too late - thanks to CEO Goshen for destroying a great company in 15 years. I love my 2005 G35 coupe 6mt. I would not touch a Nissan until they fix their cars and start making money, they are bleeding cash and are still going in the wrong direction coming out with a low selling 400Z sports car in a dying market when they should be making 6 different SUVs - hi-bred and all electric like Hyundai. The new Tucson looks way better than this and is cheeper at mid 30s for a fully loaded one. I'm waiting for more HP or the hi-bred RAV 4. Both are more sporty and cheeper with more features and performance.

Reviewer nees to be more objective compared to the competition. That power train is pure garbage. CVTs do not belong in Luxury vehicles. Especially a Jatco CVT. The variable compression engine is neither fast, efficient, or quiet. Then its fwd based too which only Lexus can get away with as a luxury brand in this segment.

    • @Lucky8s

I'm sorry to see everyone pressuring Nissan/Infiniti to dump the CVT but it's really a lot more reliable than a regular transmission as long as you take it to a mechanic that knows enough to add the special fluid that is required. It will tow more, get better gas mileage and last way longer. I wouldn't know what to even do with the regular 8 speed transmission these reviewers keep harping about on brands like BMW. Nissan has way better integrity than the other brands. I started having issues with my Honda pilot at 115,000 miles. Haven't had even a check engine light in the past 180,000 miles on my Nissan Pathfinder. But the biggest reason I'm sold is because the drive is far More natural than any others I've driven. I test drove the Nissan Xterra back in the day and the drive was superior to the Jeep Grand Cherokee we ended up buying. The QX55 is down right gorgeous and it will sell great regardless of what these people say.

Until they make CVTs that don't feel like CVTs, CVTs should only be in economy cars. At least, that's my take. I don't have the hatred so many others have towards CVTs, but I agree that luxury cars should probably stick with traditional automatics. Or just go full electric and have no gears to shift...

As an Infiniti owner, I definitely think this could be better. Personally, I think the exterior is best in class, but they had one hell of an opportunity to do something different with that interior, and with something other than a 4-cylinder and CVT. I hope that the new QX60 can save them. But, it's still a great looking car.

I own an FX and when I heard they are going to make a "new" FX I thought they were going to put the same drive train from the Q60/Q50 but nope they gotta slap in the same economic transmission and some turbo 4 cylinder. I don't think INFINITI is going to last any longer. Most of their cars are ending up as rentals anyways.

Looks like an attempt to copy the Italians from Alfa Stelvio in design. Anyone who is looking to get this might as well get the Stelvio instead too. Or the upcoming Genesis GV70. The price and loaded features at the base trim is something someone can appreciate. But, when GV70 is here, infinity will lose that too. Looks like Infinity can't make a future out of this. Better try an EV crossover for a fresh start and capture the market?

I had a Honda crosstour and saw an article on this body shape. This shape is very stable and buffers wind from all angles. It is also very very stable at high speeds and wind buffering from the side.My crosstour was one of the most stable easiest cars i have evr driven. It also gives a lot of trunk space.

I can't (or maybe don't want to) picture the person who spends somewhere in the $50k (or more) range for a 4 cylinder with a CVT. The safety tech should be standard for the range.

It is not all new especially inside. It’s an aging interior and infotainment center that’s in need of a major refresh. The backup camera resolution is horrible. Don’t know why Infiniti didn’t upgrade it when they made the QX50 into a coupe.
The VC-T engine (for Variable Compression, Turbocharged) is so loud and they installed the problematic Jatco CVT transmission instead of the 9 speed automatic transmission. It’s no wonder sales are dropping year and year. For the same amount of money I’d rather purchase a Genesis GV70.

I like Edmunds and am a huge fan of Infiniti for many years but this review seems totally paid off.
They kept the same crappy CVT transmission
    Same crappy infotainment system
    Same crappy interior bits
    4 cyl engine
This is NOT the reborn Infiniti we're all waiting for. HUGE missed opportunity once again as the qx55 looks great...

  • @TinoMiller

I would assume they are using this cause ( Nissan is testing automatic transmissions in the Rogue this year ) they would want to put more production into those automatic transmissions and they rushed this QX55 to market .. Nonetheless as I have always said Nissan throws whatever is left to Infiniti and tell them to deal with what little scraps they have which is horrible .. They did it to Datsun too so year ..
Another reason is because they want to now get rid of Renault who's using their resources and want to keep well with Mitsubishi Motors ..
