The city originally wanted this air train to continue to LaGuardia, then into the city via a subway route. The airlines (whose taxes paid for this) balked. In a compromise, these air train cars are built to NYC subway standards and could run on subway tracks if, at some distant point, it was to be integrated into the system in some way.
NYC Transit should extend a 4-car LGA ✈️Shuttle train from Astoria Line over the Grand Central Pkwy and looped thru the Airport serving all Air Terminals.

the platform side doors are required to improve safety when running fully automated trains. They're quite difficult to implement on human drive trains because they require stopping accurately within a couple inches
Nice to "ride" again. I took this train from the E Train Sutphin Blvd/LIRR Jamaica complex on Christmas night last year to shoot "Connie" by night at the TWA Hotel. Quite a system - and great they have a railfan window. Any idea what the broad silver line running down the middle of the tracks is (not referring to third rail cover beside the track)? Would really be great if PA could implement such a connection between some Subway station and LaGuardia!

There are a few areas in the subway system where trains can get up near this speed Lexington Avenue express comes to mind. These trains have faster acceleration the standard subway system. The issue in New York is the stations are so close together so trains never really get the time to really get up to speed. And other systems around the world like London stations are way more spaced.
