    The new York city subway system is so amazing. Some of the trains leaving Manhattan go under the river, others like the J train go over the river. What an engineering marvel in new York, with all those tall buildings, suspension bridges, and tunnels that go under rivers. Concrete jungle.

It's also great that you were able to do it on an R32 which has no since been retired sadly. Kudos to you for standing through the duration of that entire trip from beginning to end and capturing an important part of history of one of New York city's notable Subway and elevated lines.

      Did they replace the R32 cars with something the same size (length and width) and number of doors? Given what I've heard about how certain lines and stations are paired based on car design, I imagine they didn't have much leeway there.

    As a kid growing up in Williamsburg in the 60's / 70's (by the Hewes St station), this line fascinated me. When you exit the Chamber St station, the track that goes straight actually connected with the N line that goes over the Manhattan Bridge. Back in the day, that train was called the Nassau Loop. Also, the cavernous area to the right at the Delancey St station was the trolley terminal. Great vid- many thanks, Sir Dj Hammers!

      Many years ago there were more services available on that line. Myrtle Ave trains originated at Chambers, Jamaica trains had express and local service originating at Broad, Chambers, or Canal, and a Broadway Brooklyn local originating at Canal Street, some of which went to the Canarsie Line. Because of all these services, some trains ran express from Marcy all the way to Broadway Junction.

      @lamargoat2.054 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The J actually is express between Myrtle Avenue and Marcy Avenue every weekday during rush hours. The Z is also express but it skips some stops that the J train stops at.

    At 1:27 and 31:05 conductor seems uncertain about calling pattern - error or last-minute change of plan?
    Also express track between Myrtle/Bwy and Chauncey St appears unused - deferred maintenance or just not needed?

    • @TheElectricGhost
      @TheElectricGhost 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      officialmcdeath It is unused but the occasional out of service train or full service train (it’s rare) do use those tracks to skip those in between stops. I thought those express tracks weren’t used until one day a train was flying down them😂

    They should extend express service to Eastern Pkwy.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      An express service between Myrtle Avenue and Eastern Pkwy would be unfeasible unless you want those stations to service every 8-10 minutes (6-7.5 trains per hour).
      If you want express service on this stretch at decent headways, you would need to double the service between Myrtle Avenue and Eastern Pkwy, which is impossible due to the M using the local tracks north of Myrtle Avenue, unless you want Myrtle Avenue riders to also receive poor service levels (the capacity limit on the Williamsburg Bridge is 24 trains per hour).
      For this reason, it is better to build the South 4th Street Subway so that the 3-track Jamaica Avenue El section over Broadway is replaced with 4 track underground subways offering express service on both Myrtle Avenue and along Broadway.

      they are timer signals. to ensure the operator doesn't exceed a certain speed, the lights jump up after a couple of seconds. Spacing them close allows for this practice to be successful

    So, riddle me this: Would a savvy New Yorker know to take the Express line "most of the way" toward his destination, then hop off and wait for the corresponding Local to take him those last few stops? Seems like the intended purpose of the Express/Local system, no?
    Also, do all Express trains ultimately convert to Locals once they are far enough along?

    • @thts_txc3491
      @thts_txc3491 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      majority of express trains go local after they leave the borough, the 7 express train goes local once it leave queens and goes into manhattan

    This line has three pathetic sections: bridge - Marcy, Broadway jct - Alabama Ave and crescent - cypress. Each slows down the schedule significantly. Why can’t the straighten the Broadway Alabama at least?

    • @TheRailLeaguer

      David Wu The curves at Alabama Avenue and along Crescent Street slow down service. This should be straightened out by building a new structure over Jamaica Avenue with new stops built.
