  • In this video, I will show you how to easily and successfully tune any airgun for the best accuracy and efficiency, using the FX Impact M3 as an example. This airgun tuning guide video tutorial will include teachings, demonstrations, and philosophy on how to go about tuning your airgun for great success. This airgun tuning guide video will also include instruction & demonstration on "how to adjust an airgun regulator," and "how to adjust an airgun hammer spring." Its detailed teachings on "how to tune an airgun" will apply to any airgun, air rifle, or pellet gun. Finally, this video air gun tuning guide will teach the different needs of the diabolo airgun pellet, the Redesign airgun pellet, and the airgun slug. Accuracy demonstrations validating the airgun tunes will take place at a distance of 50 yards, 120 yards, and 150 yards. These airgun tuning methods will apply to any airgun caliber (.177 .22 .25 .30 .35 etc).
    Airgun Nation Forum FX Impact M3 Tune - RESOURCE thread;

    VIDEO OUTLINE:
    Tuning = Accuracy - Velocity - Stability - Consistency - Efficiency - Harmonics - Power Output
    What is Tuning?
    "It's the process by which we adjust the gun into a state of harmony & accuracy for any ammo or weather conditions."
    Why do we do it?
    “We tune to control performance, so that we can achieve the best accuracy, stability, and efficiency no matter what.”
    How do we go about it?
    "With an organized approach, we search & test for system harmony (reg/hammer balance points) at an accurate velocity.”
    Tuning = Adjust-Control-Search for Accuracy - Velocity - Stability - Consistency - Efficiency - Harmonics - Power Output
    Parts you need to know;
    Regulator - the regulator takes a varying air pressure and turns it into a steady one (hi to lo)
    Valve - the valve takes the air pressure coming out of the regulator and turns it into a metered pulse.
    Hammer - the hammer collides with the valve, briefly opening it.
    Tuning Process;
    1) pick a lower than what you've heard reg pressure to begin
    2) back off the hammer spring, and slowly bring up the hammer tension until velocity stabilizes
    (always better to work at the balance point & below… over causes hammer bounce & waste air)
    3) stop, that balance point is the ideal velocity for that reg setting (not necessarily perfected yet)
    4) test the velocity for accuracy & stability at a minimum of 50 yds
    5) leverage the QTS system and small reg2 adjustments to hunt around for the best accuracy
    6) search for further improvement by beginning to work the VA closed in very small increments
    7) evaluate and repeat, while searching for the speed at which the projectile stabilizes and becomes accurate.
    8) build a tune around the velocity which found you accuracy
    ** you're essentially choosing velocity with the regulator setting... the hammer spring adjustments and VA bring the rest of the system into harmony with your chosen reg setting.
    ** exhaust your refinement of the tune, THEN experiment with the VA to further enhance accuracy
    Golden Rules of Tuning;
    1) know the needs of your projectile (diabolo vs redesign vs slugs)
    2) stability trumps accuracy (pellets can hook & wobble into one hole at 50 yards, then scatter by the time they get to 100).
    3) speed trumps tune (a velocity that gets ya accuracy is more important than a tight ES & SD... the pros dial on the fly all the time… find the right speed then build a tune around it).
    4) tune the reg with headroom for temperature swings (reg up a little high to take full advantage of the M3's QTS system on cold mornings & hot afternoons… it’s okay to sacrifice a few shots)
    5) ammo matters… a lot (find the one the barrel likes and sort for reliable accuracy).
    Key Things to Remember When Tuning;
    1) let the reg be your velocity throttle, the hammer spring setting just brings the rest of the system into harmony with the reg
    2) all you’re doing with tuning is balancing forces to a chosen velocity and trimming waste air
    3) if you’re close on the tune and struggling, a tad more reg pressure can have a stabilizing effect on velocity… as can a tad more hammer tension
    4) obsess over ES & SD not because of consistency but because the tightness indicates an efficient valve closing with minimum waste air behind the projectile
    5) work slowly from low to high on the regs & hammer, it’s easy to evershoot the ideal
    6) harmonics matter to accuracy… experiment with scope position, bipod position, different moderators, harmonic tuners, sleeves, barrel tensioners, etc..

    I started with an FX Verminator .22 a few years ago, then added and Texan in .45.... then a Sidewinder in .25. I'm sorry to admit... I've never done anything scientific to them regarding tuning. I didn't realize it could even be done with such detail. I'm going to get the M4 Compact in .22 ( I like all the custom aftermarket parts. This video was excellent, and I can tell it took months to put together. After I finish this comment... I'm watching the first 30minute again. Thank you for your efforts.

    This is the best tuning video on the internet. Following other people’s tunes and recommendations on the internet is hard as people have different twist rates and barrel lengths. Have tried loads of tunes, but tired your method and this is the best tune I have ever had. 5fps extreme spread, SD of 1.8. 875fps .22 25gn pellets (standard length barrel and twist).

    Very informative great video, I watch video like this to nerd out. I don't actually own a M3 (although am aiming😂 to get one) and am in uk so sub12 but the info and knowledge is great. I do think what a couple of guys said about VA sounds good sense especially when mat duber said he turns until he gets a slight drop in speed. That would suggest the valve is only just using the optimum amount of air.

    Really enjoyed the video! I think you should mention the importance of the pin probe adjustment for slugs. My buddies and I overlooked this and had nothing but problems for about a year, before we finally thought to check it. It is so important that the slug is seated properly in the barrel. Most probes from the factory will not push the slug in far enough, which will block the transfer port. Recipe for disaster! Seems simple, but when your focused on other things it’s easy to overlook.

    And especially your take on the valve. I never used it like that. Heard about the method, but never in a way so I felt like exploring it.
    So after watching your video I tried it out and the metallic sound when adding more tension on the hammer now sounds more harmonic.
    The valve on the M3 is quite sensetive, but anyway it is possible to control the velocity within a few fps 👍

    The plenum valve regulator ! Without a chronograph you will be lost trying to find the number one reason your PCP may not be able to reach the potential of your particular air gun .
    Thanks Steve for all you do for beginners and refresher course for us old veterans ! ❤️
    Also , a big thanks to the pro shooters willing to share their knowledge ! ❤️
    On another subject and Maybe I have missed it . Studies done addressing moisture under high pressure . Filling your PCP with high pressure air .
    No fill will be consistently the same with the % of moisture you put in a bottle every time . Moisture causes corrosion and a buildup of water in a compressor and portable holding tank . How does it effect a regulator over time and its effectiveness and reliability ? How often should you release the pressure in your fill bottles to drain water ? Do they make a moisture meter for holding tanks to know the moisture content with each fill etc………

    • @AEAC
      @AEAC  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting questions you bring up. I have had bottles apart to replace worn stem seals and its always been bone dry in there... and I live in the tropics, muggy Florida. About the regs, the ones we see being made in my FX factory tour video don't look to have any parts sensitive to water. Steve

    • @hotchihuahua1546
      @hotchihuahua1546 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AEAC Steve,
      Thank you for your answer .
      I make a point of putting my compressor in a climate controlled room with less than 50 % humidity with inline filters . However , I do go to friends houses where their compressors are in a garage that is open and when the pressure is released a lot of water comes out of the compressor relief valve . I can only assume some of the condensation gets through to the inside of a PCP and much more so if you don’t replace the filters .
      You are right about Florida having high humidity but in South Carolina it’s in the 80-90s during the Summer . It would be interesting to know the % of moisture in a bottle after it’s been charged . Some days you can really see the mist coming out of the barrel after a shot .
      By the way , I must say this again ! The interview you had with the pro shooters was superb !!! 👍👍

    • @AEAC
      @AEAC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Hot Chihuahua I too have had my compressor in a climate controlled room, with about 55% humidity, have run no desiccant filters for 7 years,, and things still stay dry for me. Just lately, I've got filters on my new compressor, the Alkin. I'm not.mad about it, lol 😊

  • @Dan-ke7qh

    When you say for the VA : Max setting -1/4 is that

    Getting ready to buy one of these for squirrel duty around my house. Shots get out to absolute max of 70 yards with 95% of shots inside 50 yards. Woukd you suggest the standard size or the compact? There will be many offhand shots at 40 yards and in which makes me lean for compact but I'm not sure the compact has enough juice for the rare 60 maybe 70 yard shot I'm suggesting

    I'm going to be purchasing FX impact Mark III used but I want to shoot slugs and pellets in that case I would have to purchase the heavy liner correct? Besides the liner do you need to upgrade anything else to shoot slugs? The only thing else I'm considering is to purchase a harmonic balancer. I don't want to go crazy on modifications but just want to know the essentials.

    Love your video's.
    I recently picked up an FX Panthera compact hunter in .22 and i have 15 tins of JSB 14.3 jumbo express that i need to burn up. I was wondering if you had any suggestions on settings to keep these around 800 fps. Im not sure how low i can go on the reg and hammer spring

      Hello and thanks!! So this week, I'll be releasing the NAC video (Northeast Airgun Classic) and in it, there will be several Pro-Staff interviews in which they talk about their setups & tuning settings. It will be quite helpful to Panthera owners. Steve

      I wouldn’t go below 70bars on the 2nd reg, just turn the hammer down until you get a little over desired velocity and then trim down with the valve adjuster. You can fly those pellets at 860, love them! You’ll have a ton of shots per fill😁

    Tuning has been the missing link in my knowledge train. I know all the steps to shoot, EXCEPT tuning. The only tuning I know is to go to a heavier or lighter pellet. Will you be showing us how to tune any air rifle, or just FX ? Now, to watch and take notes from your 5 month journey. Thanks Steve, you're the face of airgunning. EDIT : I liked your grass roll edit LOL.

    What a good video, very educational, I congratulate you!!! I have a question. I recently had an M3 and I am setting it up. It is true that when the M3 is well set up you should hear it clearly when the plenum fills with air or is it a myth? I ask you why I don't hear it and to be clear that I have to keep insisting on searching for those sounds or maybe it's not necessary.

    • @kims2r

      It depends on your regulator settings, I’m shooting .22 18gr pellets with 90bar 2nd reg and I don’t really hear it. I think if the reg is set higher you will hear it more.

    Hello Steve...greetings from Peru 👋👋👋....it has passed some time since my last contact with you. I hope you are doing well, and I wish you all the best for this year that is just starting. I would like to ask you if you can recommend me how to get the better performance of my Kalibrgun CT2 45 (short one) cal .22 reaching the longest possible distance shots... Currently with 910fps I get good groups wit JSB 18.13gr at 50mt (about 1/2" and with 7fps of spread). Given that this rifle doesn't have an easy way to adjust the regulator, I rather not to open it to change the standard setting (130bar) up or down. Therefore, having the regulator at 130bar, what fps do you think that I should set when using JSB 18.13gr, and when and change to 25.39gr ? ... on the other hand, having the chance to adjust only the hammer, how can I optimize and reduce the spread? Do you think that I can reach 120/130yds shots with a consistent performance?
    I'm desperate to buy a FX Impact M3 (short or 60), but unfortunately I'm still waiting for the local dealer (to buy the Kalibrgun I have to wait for two years)... Well I hope you can give me some tips that help me improve my settings of my rifle. Thanks in advanced and have a save shooting... until next time
    👋👋👋

    (Steve if you could pin this comment it is an important clarification to my comments expressed in this video) Attention all RMAC and Pyramyd Cup registrants! This is super important and you NEED to do this! In competition, YOU DO NOT need that BC advantage of the Zan BR100s! What I meant to say is that everyone needs to be competing with .177 JSB 7.3 grain Diabolo Exact RS! Trust me, that will be your go to pellet especially in Utah. You can thank me later. LOL!
