The thought of a ship named Enterprise having a laser to shoot down enemy missiles, we could be heading closer to Gene Rodenberry being a visionary like Jules Verne.
Well, yeah. CV-6 was one of three Yorktown-class carriers, the others being USS Yorktown herself (CV-5) and USS Hornet (CV-8 -- she should've been CV-7, but USS Wasp beat her to it). In fact, it's not true that Gene Roddenberry's first choice of name for his hero ship was Enterprise. In the very earliest drafts of Star Trek, she's the Yorktown. Then I guess CVN-65 showed up, and Gene changed his mind in order to honor her ...
Yorktown's legacy survived and made into Wing Commander 3 where it became the flagship carrier that put an end to the Human-Kilrathi war. CV-40 Yorktown class Light Carrier known as TCS Victory
@@inigobantok1579 she was, but her story was incredible. It took so much to send her to the bottom, she survived Coral Sea, and nearly survived Midway if it wasn’t for a lone Japanese submarine.
I’ve always wanted a Band of Brothers like show about the Enterprise during WW2. The show Battle 360 is close enough but I think it’d really bring to life the history of the ship and the men who served aboard her.
My Dad was a torpedo pilot on Enterprise late 1944-1945. He was a member of the world's first designated low level attack squadron to fly at night and in instrument weather. He was a member of Night Torpedo Squadron 90. From Pearl Harbor to the end of the war, the ship's company swore that Enterprise had a soul and was more than a big hunk of steel. She was a living being according to those who served on her.
Yeah! If the giant Essex carriers CV-10 Yorktown, CV-11 Intrepid, CV-12 Hornet, CV-16 Lexington, & even the bigger CV41- Midway could be preserved. Than tiny CV6 Enterprise could've been preserved even with heavy battle damage.
Jack C. Taylor, founder of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, had served on Enterprise as a fighter pilot during the war, and (re-)named his company in 1969 after the ship.
CVN 80 will have the captains desk and some port holes from CV 6 Enterprise that were saved when she was scrapped as well as CVN 80's steel is recycled steel from CVN 65 Enterprise.
I love how you showed the Excelsior class for the enterprise, which the Enterprise-B was, but it was retrofitted with different nacelles, 2 more impulse engines, and hull bulges around the forward deflector dish.
Glad someone else noticed. I'm a little surprised at the choice since the text was obviously referencing the Constitution-class Enterprise, but honestly we'll take any Enterprise at this point.
@@Merennulli I mean in all fairness, the Excelsior class was the most common class for starfleet, and the most common non-Enterprise model used by Star Trek. Which means that the Excelsior is kinda the face of Star Trek.
I remember watching a video of the ship during the battle of Santa Cruz (same battle the Hornet was lost). Helmsman was literally drifting the ship like it was Fast and Furious.
My brother was a Marine stationed on the Big E during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He maintained the weapon and radar systems of the F-A18. Wish I got to hear more stories from him.
Much like HMS Warspite that survived 2 world wars, was the most decorated ship in the British navy and a list of achievements in her records to long to go into the USS Enterprise is the American equivalent of one ship that should have been preserved as a museum for future generations but was sadly scrapped instead.
I used to talk with a WW2 Vet who was in naval training when Pearl Harbor happened. Saw the whole war on a troop transport as an AA gunner. His stories reminded me of the chaos this ship saw.
There have been so many comments made about this video that some are in danger of getting lost. I'm going to mention just one, which talks about a ship that actually beat the Enterprise's battle star record: the destroyer USS Nicholas (DD-449), which earned 16 stars in World War II, five more in the Korean War, and nine more in the Vietnam War, for a grand total of 30 battle stars -- ten more than the Enterprise. Not to rain on the Nicholas' parade, but this is why when I talk about Enterprise's battle stars, I always make sure to point out how, being a carrier, and therefore fighting with her aircraft, she was effectively in the front line of every battle she fought in. And then, of course, there's the Battle of Midway, where she shares with her sister Yorktown the honor of delivering the single deadliest blow in naval history.
The Big E! Nothing shows American pride more than Enterprise. CV6 was the Greatest Enterprise and it's great that the name lived onto into the modern age with a Nimitz class bearing the legendary name.
Totally agree, The Big E, USS Enterprise, is an iconic symbol of American pride. CV6 was legendary, and it's awesome that the name lives on with the Nimitz class.
Actually no not a Nimitz class, CVN-65 was in it’s own class and the only one of her kind, however currently holds the record for service at over 48 years. CVN-80 a Gerald R. Ford class will once again bear the name Enterprise with a long proud legacy to live up too.
The Enterprise was not the first ship to draw first blood against the Japanese navy. Before the attack on pearl there was a Japanese mini sub that was sunk by a destroyer on patrol.
If there's main character in the Pacific War, then USS Enterprise is the one. The amount of times she luckily dodge dive bombs and torpedos is staggering. It's like she has some kind of plot armor. When she's the only carrier left, her crew posted a sign "Enterprise vs Japan". Truly a badass ship.
As a Trekkie, the Star Trek reference in the end was the best cherry on top I've ver seen from any TH-cam video. Truly fitting and amazing the name "Enterprise" and its significance to history.
One minor correction. Gene Roddenberry named his Starship the USS Yorktown. It was the Network that looked at it and said "Make it the Enterprise! Everybody loves that ship". In an ironic twist, following the Enterprise's destruction in STar Trek III the Search for Spock, the crew gets a new ship at the end of Star Trek IV the Voyage Home. This ship is dubbed NCC-1701-A The USS Enterprise-A. This new ship had originally been Enterprises sister ship... the USS Yorktown.

It's interesting you used an Excelsior-class as your Star Trek Enterprise of choice. That class includes the Enterprise B (technically the fourth Starfleet ship named Enterprise, after NX-01, NCC-1701, and NCC-1701-A), though the Enterprise B was visually distinct from other contemporary Excelsiors. Enterprise B is by no measurement the best-known Enterprise, having starred for a handful of minutes in a movie and then getting out-shone by the Enterprise D in the same film; it has not appeared much since then, apart from flashback episodes and beta-canon. Even so, the Excelsior-class in general was a major evolution in ship design from the Constitution, so in some ways, it's not unlike the nuclear Enterprise compared to the WWII one. A bit of a continuation of this legacy, NASA's first Space Shuttle was named Enterprise after Star Trek's hero ships, so in some ways, Enterprise lends its legacy to space exploration just as much in reality as it does in fiction. NASA's Enterprise was originally going to be named differently, but NASA received so many letters from Trek fans that they decided to change the name. Unfortunately, the Space Shuttle Enterprise was an earlier design that was meant more to test aspects of the program, and thus, never actually made it into space. On a different note, Trek's Enterprise was nearly called the Yorktown instead. It wasn't only because of Enterprise's legacy and fame that Roddenberry chose Enterprise, either - his choice of name followed the commissioning of the nuclear USS Enterprise, meaning that at the time, "Enterprise" was synonymous with "cutting edge" among naval enthusiasts. Roddenberry wanted to show humanity's advancement and give an idea of what we could accomplish in 250 years' time, so he actually rejected some near-future concepts like combat laser weapons (it would take decades and not centuries to get those), instead replacing them with "phasers". Even so, many concepts Star Trek pioneered have been made real now. The Enterprise name helped establish both that the hero ship was high-technology and that it was among the best of the best.
Yes finally my favorite and recognizable aircrafts carrier can show it's true recognition, thank you simple history. Also i play World of Warship blitz 2 months ago and i got myself the Enterprise and the Commanders William B. Halsey.
At one point the Big E was the only active Aircraft Carrier in the pacific and still fought. This vessel literally saved the US. It's sad that she didn't get converted into a museum. RIP Enterprise.
There's a missing detail: Enterprise was the only *active US carrier in the pacific* when CV3 Saratoga had go to the west coast for dry dock repairs, Enterprise then had to work alone with her task force of Destroyers & battleships that defended her. In the meanwhile, the Essex carriers were still being built in the East coast while the fighting was ongoing.
@@FevnorTheWolf Yep that was real, but Enterprise wasnt alone they had escorts like the Gridley destroyers, Battleship North Carolina, & light cruiser North Hampton too
Not quite. The Enterprise's airpower was augmented by the Marine squadrons on Guadalcanal and Tulagi as well as the islands in the lower end of the Solomons chain, and HMS Invincible had been seconded to the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Also, the Japanese were running out of planes and stretched intolerably thin on oil to fuel their ships when the Guadalcanal campaign was reaching its climax in November of 1942. After they lost the Night Battle of Guadalcanal it was pretty much over for them in that campaign but they had already been pushed to the point where it had become unsustainable to continue their effort to retake Guadalcanal and fight on New Guinea.
Fun Fact about the Star Trek Enterprise, there 9 Starships Named Enterprise: NCC 1701, 1701A, 1701B, 1701C, 1701D (from Star Trek: The Next Generation) E, F(small showing in Star Trek: Picard), and G, IF one Counts NX-1 Enterprise from Star Trek: Enterprise that brings the total to 9.
Its sad that they weren't able to save the ship after the war. However, it wasn't so much about the ship but it's legacy. She made sure "history never forgets...the name...Enterprise"
it was originally designated cv-6, it would get redesignated as cvn-6 during ww2 with the n standing for night operations as it received aircraft capable of nighttime operations, learned this about said ship while watching battle 360 a history documentary on the uss enterprise cvn-6 growing up , it was on the history channel
U.S.S Enterprise was both highly respected and, equally, feared by the Japanese Naval forces. mere mention of her presence in a battle inspireed both fear and doubt in many Japanese admirals and captains. My Great Uncle Lester Riley serves in the Pacific campaign during WW2 and told us stories about seeing the enterprise in action. Often referring to the ship as Awe Inspiring and a force to be reckoned with.
I don't care whether the registry is CV-6 or NCC-1701, if there's a ship coming to my rescue I pray to god she's named Enterprise. "Treat her like a lady, and she'll always bring you home." -Leonard McCoy
Should note in star trek the original name of the enterprise was ment to be Yorktown but was later changed to enterprise, however Yorktown stayed as a sister ship in the trek universe with the installment of star trek online giving us the Yorktown class with the first ship of its variant being the uss enterprise ncc-1701 F
Thank you USS Enterprise and her crew for liberating the Philippines some Japanese ship who lost in the battle are still seen under water and became diving spot for foreigners and locals
Another legacy of the ship is the company Enterprise Rent-A-Car. The company’s founder Jack Taylor was a fighter pilot during World War Two and flew from the Enterprise.
The Grey Ghost in WWII was the RMS Queen Mary. She was considered veritably invisible because she outdistanced everything on or under the Atlantic during the war. No one could find her once she left port (thank God)! Enterprise might have also gained the moniker of 'Grey Ghost' on the Pacific Theatre, however the Queen Mary earned the nickname first!
At the end, it's interesting that you used an Excelsior-class to represent starship Enterprise. Though, the original was a Constitution, Enterprise 1701-B was an Excelsior like you pictured, but a bit different in shape. Also, Enterprise B was only shown in Star Trek Generations - Mid 90's - and the fan film Of Gods and Men.
They tried turning her into a museum, serveral sailors tried fundraising but it was a failed effort and the ship was scrapped. To quote one of the sailors "they told me she was at dock being scrapped, i rushed from the bar to see, they already had her going piece by piece, it was the saddest sight i ever saw, it was like ny home was being torn down right in front of me".

It always saddens me when I think about the failure to turn the USS Enterprise into a museum ship and her ultimate fate. As arguably the most legendary ship the US ever built, she deserved better. Unforgivable.
Great video and fantastic vessel but she wasn't the first US warship to draw blood in WW2, that would be the USS Ward which sank a Japanese mini sub at Pearl Harbour on Dec 7th 1941, they just didn't know it at the time
“It is my privilege to recommend a large number of decorations after Guadalcanal, but few give me as much pleasure as recommending the Enterprise for the presidential unit citation. This was the Big E’s eighth operation in less than a year and the Japanese reported sinking her so many times that she acquired an additional sobriquet, “The Galloping Ghost of the Oahu Coast.” She helped open the war and she helped closed it. She is obsolete now. But, as Secretary Forrestal said, “She is the one ship that nearly symbolises and carries the Navy in this war.” Admiral William F Halsey.
My grandfather was a naval welder at Hunters Point naval shipyard and Long Beach naval shipyard during WWII. He worked on both USS Enterprise aircraft carriers during and after the war. He was apart of the construction of the second ship and was given an award for developing a new welding technique that was needed on the nuclear powered ship. I still have the documents, it's amazing to look through them from time to time.

Hope we get the same from CVN-80 the next ship to be called “The Big E”, see her in 2028.😊

The thought of a ship named Enterprise having a laser to shoot down enemy missiles, we could be heading closer to Gene Rodenberry being a visionary like Jules Verne.
The USS Yorktown deserves its own movie or series. The ship had a short, but legendary service history.

I’ve always wanted a Band of Brothers like show about the Enterprise during WW2. The show Battle 360 is close enough but I think it’d really bring to life the history of the ship and the men who served aboard her.

You should look up the Last Naval Battle of ww2.
"And Admiral.... It is the Enterprise."
The fact that the Big E was scrapped makes me sad. It would've been the perfect museum ship!
Damn travesty that the USS Enterprise was not converted into a floating museum. That WWII ship is rife with history!
The Mighty E was a great ship and it’s ashamed she never became a museum but her name will forever live on! Can’t wait for CV-80 to take the baton!

I call it the excelsior block two.
Because the Enterprise B is an Excelsior Refit like the USS Lakota
YES! You finally did it! THANK YOU! Thank you for making a video on this amazing ship!
"Let's make sure history never forgets the name Enterprise."
The Big E! Nothing shows American pride more than Enterprise. CV6 was the Greatest Enterprise and it's great that the name lived onto into the modern age with a Nimitz class bearing the legendary name.

Best ship from both ww2 and star trek
One minor correction. Gene Roddenberry named his Starship the USS Yorktown. It was the Network that looked at it and said "Make it the Enterprise! Everybody loves that ship". In an ironic twist, following the Enterprise's destruction in STar Trek III the Search for Spock, the crew gets a new ship at the end of Star Trek IV the Voyage Home.

@@MainMite06 iirc the crew even put up a banner on the flight deck that said "Enterprise vs Japan"
Great video I love watching videos of our beloved Enterprise!
