Thanks for the information. Those that say don't use turbo yeast blah blah blah dont knock this person i think this is good for beginners till they can feel there way around things and learn more i was a turbo person till I found groups that had other recipes which I never knew of
Great Video. I have done the exact same thing using the exact same products. With great results. The comments reflect other people’s processes that I have tried. I went back to Degassing and turbo clear. The clearer it is the better. Found a little staining on the element Because I did not clear it good and filter. Just my opinion. Thanks for sharing.
Surely stirring it all up will pick up all the crap from the bottom again? I thought you had to keep it very still so can syphon without picking it all up? Or do you do this after you’ve syphoned into another container?
Hi Adam the lid is fitted with an airlock (the plastic thing with a red lid) this is half filled with water which then allows co2 to escape but keeps O2 and any other nastys out.
When I have finished the fermentation and the turbo carbon has mostly settled to the bottom. Do I siphon the liquid leaving the sediment and then degass/add turbo clear OR do I degass (agitating the sediment layer back into suspension) and then add turbo clear? The reason I'm asking is because it is said that siphoning the liquid of from the sediment makes the clearing process work better since the turbo clear has less work to do which makes sense. ON the other hand I would think that by stirring the liquid after fermentation, it would make the turbo carbon that has settled at the bottom absorb more impurities and therefore make it a better quality wash however it would cause all the sediment to go back into suspension. So I am still confused as to which would be the best option
Thanks for your comment I don't know what your doing but your having different results to me. I end up with a tasteless smell free spirit base at the end. And I produce spirits that are as good as any shop bought. If I did not then I would not keep doing it, it's that simple. I'm not going to invest money in something that produces shit results.
Hi Matt, quick question- i noticed that when making your wash you kept the lid on tightly during fermentaion-however the intructions on the back of the still spirits triple package instructs me to leave the lid on loosely? thanks! adam
this is a great video can i just ask ive done 4 washes now and not one as gone below 1.000 even after 11 days ive tried 2 hydrometers ive tried one with heat at 24c and one without roughly 20c is there something im doing wrong
fester Adams 28-30c is best for yeasts usually colder takes longer,I place my bucket in the sink and run hot water to warm the ferment over night seems to work
I’ve done 30 washes and never got down to 1.000 . I believe my wash gets too warm in the early stages of fermentation and some of the yeast dies off leaving me with too much sugar for the amount of yeast . I’ve never worried about it . Clear wash for 48 hours . Distill . Drink . I’m happy with the results . High purity , clean spirit .
hmmm..... but I think there is still a place for turbo yeasts. Ive made both and I think Tomato paste is my favorite... But I did find that instead of using dap or yeast nutrients, a couple of teaspoons of turbo into a tomato wash with your normal yeast (I actually use dried baking yeast, 67pence for 100g) will speed it up and get a higher yeld. with non of the overtones your talking about that comes with stressing yeast, for me its just a lot cheaper and cleaner! still a good vid Mattarg :)
@@geraldpino5037 ...The answer is yes..... I've never used the carbon fluid before..... always feared I might screw up a batch. Really looking forward to Part 3 in order to see the clarity. Mine comes out as clear as water without using it.
Just a clean base spirit that can be flavoured with any spirit or liquor flavouring that i want to make. Lot's of people don't agree with the use of charcoal so it's up to you really.
Hi bearclaw336 and thanks for your comment. The still i use is a pot still and the company who i bought it from describe this as the best way in order to produce the best quality spirit. The carbon absorbs any off flavours produced by the yeast during fermentation. I then distill only once and then carbon filter once more for a clean spirit with no smell. I can then add any spirit essence to make the spirit i want. Remember this is just the way i do it i try to keep it simple.
What if you have a fermenter that is not bucket like and tapered at the top? Can you just lightly swirl the whole fermenter by hand upon adding finings part b? My fermenter most resembles a 5 gallon water bottle. I can't stick a spoon in it to stir. Can anyone comment?
this is boges! it dose not need to be done. it says u dont have to. when u distill it will be clean and clear. if its not u did something wrong...ive never done this, also he added carben to the wash when he is done there will be no tast lelft like vodka or everclear. i make whisky it has a tast..
You don't degas wash once the fermentation is done it will clear on it's own in 24 hrs.You will do yourself a favor by throwing that turbo crap in the garbage. Not being rude but plain bakers yeast is better.
I keep seeing people put down the turbo yeasts and I personally think that they are either using it wrong or trying to rush the distilling process.... I have never had an issue with using turbo yeast and I've tried all sorts of yeast from bakers to wine and champagne and all sorts of recipes over the last 4 years (incl. tomato paste, FWI thats a waste of time). If you want plain flavorless alcohol from white sugar, then a pack of turbo yeast run properly through a GOOD REFLUX STILL is absolutely fine.. If you have a pot still and/or are making whiskey, bourbon or rum, then don't use turbo yeast.
Not rude, just ignorant. More than about 10% alcohol will kill bakers yeast, leaving you with lots of unfermented sugar. Turbo yeasts are high alcohol tolerant and fast acting. They haven't been selected for any other characteristics though and that make them useless for other homebrew applications aside from preparing a wash for distillation.
@@jase4270 .. I believe that is the problem.. store bought spirits, are CRAP.. compared to a well made, home made spirit, using a good yeast (not Turbo), not trying to get greedy with each wash (trying to making a HIGH ABV%) Taking good cuts is essential .. the blending.. .. ect ect UNLESS of coarse your not interested in a fine spirit, and just after an alcoholic beverage.. then yeah.. it is..
I use turbo yeast and turbo clear. I usually keep thing at 15 to 17 percent. Have had 20. Works great. Tastes fine. Does not smell as good as corn mash but I used turbo there as well. Don’t know why people get angry Just take the info and do what works for you.

Another easy way to degas ur wash is by emptying it into another bucket 5-6 time it works great

Why sanitize the spoon but not the lid? They were both in the same sink.
So once its finished do you drain the wash to get rid of sludge before removing the co2 or do you just stir it all up with it still in

Why is the wash black?
Why stir before ?
Is that so dark from turbo carbon. I have some but have not used it
Yes
can't wait for part 3.

Great music.
Thanks for the video - lots of info and looking forward to part 3. One tip though - Use a tripod! the camerawork is a wee bit disorienting. Cheers!
My son does the camera work it would be awkward to film with a tripod thanks for the xomment
After adding the clearing agent, is the wash safe to drink without distilling (yes, I understand the taste isn't the preferred taste)?
Thank you for comment i always enjoy your videos buddy.
Hi thank you so much for your comment. It's nice to hear your views and i always like hearing from fellow brewers. Take care Matt.
The comments crack me ass up !!!! Lmmfao !!! good video right on spot 👍🏼
Do you know how long you can wait before distilling it?
What happens when the wash will not clear

Can you turn the wash into flavored wine by adding kool aid and sugar instead of distilling?
There are kits you can buy to add flavourings from youngs called alcoshots. but it tastes just like alcoholic juice. worth a try maybe.

Would racking the wash before adding the turbo-clear aid the clearing process?
i had that same question

Yes use the handle of a spoon and stir it. I do this with wine.
sanitizer what do you used???
ALCOHOL CAUSES GIS CANCERS
Spraying sanitiser on the spoon and putting it in the wash? Try rinsing in hot water.
Even if it’s a no rinse sanitizer i like to rinse my stuff anyway
Whoa! I got sea sick watching you stir with handheld camera.
you make whiskey from malted grains. hops arent for distilling usualy
I put my spoon on the end of a drill works best
You can but a thingy that fits into a drill
I use a 12V electric outboard in a 200L drum.
Part 3 soon and it gets really interesting :) Thank you for your comment.
