      I almost lost the channel over a copyright ding from the distributor on this very video which is now acceptable with permission. So I was very afraid to upload any content for a while. I'm so glad that you have come back!

      I wish that the joffrey ballet debut of the Lost choreography was a better quality. I have tried and I'm not successful in obtaining it. I was the first person to post that and to this day I don't even remember where I got it

    Great work as always! Thank you so much for your passion and dedication to this epic composition. I also watched another version on this channel at the end of which a young man offers up post-performance commentary in French but is silenced by a German translator.

      24:39 . Stravinsky is unhinged. My 2nd favorite part. I have talked to a few Chosen Ones who say they have to ground themselves when this comes because it is so jarring. Can you imagine if Stravinsky went with the "chess game scenario" that was alternatively presented? They would throw checkers as they rioted.

      @@fatovamingus i consider that part as one of the greatest beat drops in classical music and i absolutely love it. i also imagine how different the world would be if stravinsky chose the chess game scenario. i wouldnt be able to listen to this spectacle!

      I don't find the performance even close to the original Joffrey Ballet performance who had nothing to go by but the story they were told. Here the marinsky has had the benefit of watching another company. I believe that it's the excellent camera quality that makes this somehow at that level.

    Yes as great as the definition is, the direction and filming are not as good as the original. Maybe I've gotten use to that production. The attempt to do many more group closeups as opposed to filming the entire dance group as they dance has cost the overall effect to be not as dramatic. And then you can see the dancers missteps as well as the old man being 4 inches off the ground pretending to kiss it. Thank you very much anyway!

    • @DesertAres
      @DesertAres 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In doing so many closeups you miss the huge amount of dancers on stage. And having the orchestra playing in the middle of the performance. What? But then again, I'm probably wedded to the version you uploaded. People I know that don't like the piece UNTIL the see the dancers (1987 of course!) then they understand the music.@@fatovamingus

    While earnest and well-intended (of that last, I have no doubt) the overall performative aspects of this variant of the Hodson/Archer reconstruction are not a patch on what the Joffrey Ballet brought us onstage and in a beautifully shot video record in the 1980s. (At nearly 40 years of age, the Joffrey video cries out for a complete restoration) That first outing brought us weighted, "earth responsive" movement and psychological intensity that never shirked full commitment. Based solely on this particular videotaped iteration the center of gravity of the body and psyche is all wrong here. One needs to "enter" the photographs of Nijinsky himself to understand why this is so. Particularly those photographs made of him from L'APRES-MIDI D'UNE FAUNE on through JEUX. Hopefully, the Mariinsky has done just that by now and begun to honor what is truly his legacy. Though this is an adequate record of the skeleton of LE SACRE -- and valuable as such -- it is completely missing the ballet's interior life.
    All the above aside, thank you very much for this post.

      I love you and your thoughts on this dichotomous performance: they are counting, no? And the observation about Joffrey being long overdue for a digitally remastered copy has been an issue for some time. I have devoted 11 years to archiving and writing on this thing for no money, no praise. I simply know that this is necessary and I have an illnesses that is getting in the way of my long term plans.
      Write me - maybe we can come up with an approach to the Joffrey to loosen their grip thisisfatova at gmail

      @@fatovamingus Not to dampen your spirits but it is an unfortunate reality: PBS owns the film of THE SEARCH NIJINSKY'S RITE OF SPRING with the Joffrey as part of its GREAT PERFORMANCES/DANCE IN AMERICA series. It is their produced and solely broadcast product. For some reason they have a tight reign on most of the programs of that series. (I believe there are over 60 !!!) I know because a couple of others and myself tried to get them to release their still excellent program on TRAILBLAZERS OF MODERN DANCE. It's still the most comprehensive view on 20th century American Modern Dance. The crowning glory in that all-round excellent program is Sir Frederick Ashton's FIVE BRAHMS WALTZES IN THE MANNER OF ISADORA DUNCAN expertly performed by the late great Lynn Seymour. She comes as close to what Isadora must have been like to her audiences as any performer I've ever seen; and I've seen most all of them live and on film. There are also rare views of very early dances with Martha Graham. As with your copy of Joffrey here, once in a great while someone will post their personally digitized VHS copy of TRAILBLAZERS. Unfortunately the film is over 45 years old so it is not usually in the greatest of shape.
      Other than their extensive Balanchine series from the 1980s none of the others have ever been released in any home video format.
      When you ask PBS whether or not it will ever be done, you never get an answer. And myself and others have asked many, many times.
      It is really frustrating.

      It's funny because I always felt like the Marinsky was counting especially in the second act. That's a menacing part of the ballet and really the most explosive of Stravinsky's work and they're just not feeling it you know?
