Microtech Amphibian RAM-LOK Folder: Powerhouse Beast & U.S.A. Made!

  • The folks at Microtech have, next to the newly introduced MSI, an extremely popular folder in their RAM-LOK series with this Amphibian! After hesitating for a bit I finally grabbed one and am not sorry! Rich in detail and strength and USA made in their North Carolina shop, they really hit it out of the park, whether you decide to go with any one of a number of handle materials or blade finishes, serrated, or not. Happy with this one, for sure, so check it out!

    I bought the Amphibian because I wanted a big, brutal knife. I'm tired of small, boring knives with blades that are about 3 inches long. Although at first Amphibian seemed a little awkward to me, this impression passed as soon as I took the knife in my hand. It was love at first touch. I've been carrying the Amphibian for several months now, it's a great companion both in the city and outdoors. The only thing I would change about this knife would be replacing the bearings to washers.

    I was very tempted to go Amphibian but went MSI and saved $100 and have an easier edge to sharpen. LOL Definitely a cool knife.

    I know some will find the recurve and serrations undesirable, but the performance improvement is significant. The maintenance and sharpening is not difficult with the right system.

    Great review! Do you find the M390MK to be too soft as some claim?

    • @OGBladeReviews

      It's screaming sharp out of the box, so not sharpened yet. I've sharpened my MSI a number of times, and that one takes a great edge that keeps. As Larrin Thomas has stated recently, the most important part about maintaining sharpness is edge geometry and not steel composition or HRC. And that comes from somebody with a doctorate in metallurgy. If every steel was hardened to its maximum we'd have a lot of brittle and breaking edges, of course it all depends upon what the knife is used for...

    We have similar knife preferences. I went crazy with the Microtech Ram Loc series- two ram
    loc Stitch(s), two MSI, and one Amphibian. My EDC rotation is limited to these models. It's hard to choose just one. However, the Stitch and the Amphibian carry an extra ounce one ounce. You mentioned on a previous video that the MSI was going to be used as a EDC.
    Do you have a preference ?

      I'm getting really attached to the MSI in the injection molded version that I showed for comparison in this video. I'm extremely impressed by the amphibian but for day-to-day use I'm getting lots out of the MSI. I also have the straight edged version in G10

    I loved it till I thought about sharpening it. That tip will look goofy quickly I think

    • @OGBladeReviews
      @OGBladeReviews  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Depends upon what you sharpen it with. Just set up your sharpener to match the existing angle, use a crock stick, or hand sharpen it. They're really no problem. Just got to follow the radius....

    • @jusme8060
      @jusme8060 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@OGBladeReviews no, that bevel will get very small quick no?

    • @OGBladeReviews
      @OGBladeReviews  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It shouldn't at all. Firstly, how hard would you use it for repeated sharpening? Secondly, the blade stock is 4 mm so you have plenty to work with overtime if that's your concern. Not sure what you're using to sharpen with, but if it's a clamp-on system then you simply treat the end belly and tip as a separate sharpening operation so you accurately follow the original bevel. I've got knives of every different blade shape and so long as I take a good hard look at it before I start sharpening I can always match the same bevel if that's where you're going....?

    • @jusme8060
      @jusme8060 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ThisOldSwordBladeReviews I guess that's true. Lots of sharpening before having to worry. I just thought that main bevel at the tip would almost disappear after a few

      Nice video. I like the Amphibian best over the Msi and Stitch. I just feels like it was made for my hands. As soon as I got it in hand I knew it was a keeper. I think you get a lot for the money be made In USA and all. Looking forward to more awesome content.

    Sadly, I owned the early versions that couldn't even pass a soft spine test. HAVE not given them a 2nd chance.

      Well a folder is a bit of personal kit, so if it doesn't live up to expectations, then you move on. Fortunately for my needs the exercise of attempting to force a folding knife to fail was never a criteria over the course of fifty years of using them. Yet, that has now become a "thing" based on reviewers who created that "need." If I feel a folder won't hold up to a particular needed use then I rely on my fixed blades, that simple... 👍
