Was at Grand Cayman coming back from a SCUBA Dive from North Wall on a 30' open deck pontoon boat, standard aluminum rail with middle and top rail bars only none at deck level....
Waves got up to 6 to 8 feet coming back into the wind, front dove under a big wave, submerged half the boat and it washed everyone's SCUBA gear off the deck into the water.
Crew stopped and dove off to collect everyone's gear. I yell at the diver in snorkle gear and mask only, " Hey please go get my Fins. They are Scuba Pro Fins and they DO NOT FLOAT!" Luckily the water is crystal clear down to 100" and we could see them whisping back and forth as they were sinking, he dove down 30" and grabbed them.

Lol the two “sunk” pontoons obviously had massive damage to the logs. If they’re still sealed and not overloaded they dont stay completely submerged in water. Pontoons, tritoons especially, are fine in 3-4 foot seas. It’s all dependent on the load and captain.

Pontoon boats are a favorite on the 40,000 acre MN lake where we have our cabin because they don't pound in up to 2' of wind chop as much as other similar size boats. That doesn't mean you should overload them or run at top speed, especially in following waves. I once rented an 18' pontoon boat in Hawaii to fish the protected side of the island on a day without big waves and it was fine. A careless or inexperienced operator can get in serious trouble on any boat, especially when the conditions are too rough for the design of the boat.
