    I’m almost CERTAIN y’all still hate me for this video, which is perfectly understandable 😂 just wanted to post this to highlight the written review I made after two more listens. Again, this is just to put some attention on the written reviews I also do 😊

      Now this review I like (even if I disagree 😊).
      I appreciate that you've listened twice more before writing the review and that you've pointed out your views on the positives, the not so good and the negatives.
      Even if I feel differently it seems like a fair and balanced review. Or perhaps I just like written reviews better than videos.

    People (like myself) like Jon Bellion for his writing and his unique choices in sounds and music. Every Bellion fan is aware that these are not songs to play at the club or around friends, it is designed to set you back into your own world. We chose to listen to his music and have an ear out for the interesting noises he makes and wonder about how he created that, even Jon knows this because he said in Let's Begin, "I love the song and we really wanna know how you made it". It just comes down to personal taste and what you're looking for in music. For me personally, I use music as a way to escape the busy days and wonder about my own life and the choices I've made, which is why Jon appeals to me.

      I love this comment because it's the best explanation of what I wanted to know. I can attribute that same feeling to when I listen to Drake and Childish Gambino. Lately I've been really doubting myself and unhappy with life and there are specific songs off of Drake's latest album that really speak to me when I question myself and my life. Gambino's music speaks to me on an ENTIRELY different level. I've never connected to an artist on such a personal level. I feel like Gambino understands me. His music is so inspiring and healing for me and I can tell that you get that from Jon. Overall, that's all that matters 😊

    This album definitely felt like something for the fans not something to get new ones. Especially since the lack of marketing. I enjoyed it and I’d say it’s strong as a complete project. The human condition definitely was a better project though.
    And you mentioned the messy sound a lot which I actually liked. You mentioned how you didn’t like “Carry Your Throne” cause it seemed like he was doing too much. So I think that’s where the difference in opinion comes from cause I like to hear what’s experimental or different to see the boundaries of music. And Jon is barely pushing those anyway.

    • @TheTuneUp
      @TheTuneUp  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I think the experimental nature is always varying for me. Sometimes I love it and I can get with the uniqueness, but sometimes it just sounds like clutter to me. I agree with you about how Bellion is pushing boundaries though! Wouldn’t feel right if he was doing what everyone else was doing 😊

    i'm a huge fan of jon and this album but i couldn't help but laugh at a lot of the faces you pulled whilst listening to questionable moments lmaoo. although i love jon's music, i can totally see that he often overproduces and sometimes its a bit overwhelming but i love that sound for a majority of the time he does it !! if you dont like that sound, then you arent going to like jon and if anyone tries to hate on you for that theyre close minded. despite differing opinions on this record, this video entertained me as always ! ignore anyone leaving unwanted negativity :))

    Dude, I got massive respect for you! I personally love Jon Bellion’s music (and his work in general) and GSP. Even though we have conflicting viewpoints about Jon Bellion, I respect you so much for looking at it from and objective viewpoint, and expressing your thoughts truthfully! I think that most people are going to hate or love JB just because of how abstract his music is, there isn’t an ‘inbetween’ anyways I just want to congratulate you for your heart you put in this video! You’ve done more than enough to win a thumbs up and a subscription! And I wanna say sorry for any Jon Bellion fans who are saying nasty things just because you don’t like him and they can’t respect your opinion. Keep up the great work!!

    Late but I’m not gonna say what everybody else has said as their explanation for how Jon hits us, I’ll point out a new topic: every time you listen you can pick up on a new detail. I could listen to a lot of his older ones (and newer ones) and every time I’d notice a new production or vocal detail and eventually you get this huge sense of complexity which I love (this is more focused to his older work).

    I just realized it all depends what kind of ear you have. You either hate it or love it. Thats what i got from all reviewers. The ones that disliked the album as a whoke tought the worst songs were actually what us fans find the best; and the ok songs where far from the favorites. I find it hilarious for me hearing this review because of how much i can disagree. Its like oposites
    Edit: The thing u can agree most with this man is that gambino is amazing, still i can listen to JB as much if not more.

    It's better produced pop and a mix of hip hop. It's a certain type that will like the entire album. I personally hate pop and have a dislike for hip hop but this album has the mix of aspects I like from both genres that I love. So therefore I enjoy the shit out of the entire album. This guy is a genius lyric wise. If you don't like the overall song you can still like the meaning behind the lyrics like Mah's Joint.

    • @TheTuneUp
      @TheTuneUp  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s what I’ve been trying to tell people and explain to them. People think I’m saying shit just for clicks and to be a hater / critic. As someone that also makes music, I would never want anyone to just hate on what I make. You don’t have to like the song, but it’s always good to respect the artist for putting themself out there and that’s something I have always, and will always respect about Jon. Regardless of my opinion of his albums, he’s insane with the pen. He’s as authentic as can be, he’s original, he’s a true talent, all that and more.

  • @EthanAlexander09

    the reason I love Jon Bellion so much when the reason why I love this album so much is that I'm able to sit down and interpret the songs in my own way and apply them to my own life I'm able to run in this reminisce back so when I didn't have to care about anything and just be free, his songs remind me of movies and there's a theme to each one but they end with no definite ending and it's up to you to interpret what it's supposed to mean and I feel like with everyone if his songs you can do that

    love the album. Some songs I don't like but the album as a whole is pretty great in my opinion. However... I really enjoyed this video because you were so honest. This is the first time I've watched a video of yours, and it is probably the first time I decided to subscribe to a channel based on a video that I disagreed with. My question now is, "You got any OneRepublic on here."

    Your review was kind considering you didn't enjoy the music.
    You mentioned wanting to know what we (fans) hear that you miss.... And yet I found myself watching your responses and wondering "how on earth does that displease him when I love it?".
    Curious also that parts you enjoyed were parts that I didn't feel straight away. I took time to warm to Let's Begin.
    Perhaps it does come down to different tastes? I do agree with the previous poster who mentioned headphones. Absolutely agree.

      Thanks for watching 🙏🏾 it’s never my intention to bash someone’s music, especially when I make my own. In every video I’ve done on Jon’s music, this has always been the general consensus of convo: me not seeing what people are raving about, and then people look at stuff I love and feel the same way I feel about that. At the end of the day, it’s really all about preference. I know his music is loved by many and that’s all that matters 😊

  • @qewqewxiii8237
    @qewqewxiii8237 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Right so first of all this is the first video ive seen from you and im going to subscribe because you have shown you are a true connisseur of music since even though you disliked the album you still held up respect for the artist. Secondly, the reason jon bellion divides opinions as you have stated is because he is the closest thing to a modern day picasso we have. his music is abstract, unique and quirky. in terms of art, his music looks like a splash of differentt colors on a canvas that make no sense, however if you decide to analyze the sounds he made based on your experiences, it gives you the ability to structure the music as you best see fit. if you take every sound in one of his tracks and connect it to the rest in a way that is appealing to you then i guarentee you'll love him. you just have to listen to his songs by making them your own songs. thats Jon's real talent and gift. he doesnt just give you what he thinks you wanna hear, he gives you something that you can make into something you wanna hear.

    • @TheTuneUp
      @TheTuneUp  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So sorry for the super late reply, but thank you so much for the comment 🙏🏾 I agree! He’s one of the few artist that truly stands out because of how talented he is. • @toreydshaun
    @toreydshaun 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I get it. Music critiques need a job🤦🏽‍♂️ but lets not forget, these albums aren't made to solely impress some random dude on the internet, it's to the taste of the artist that made it, its art. Some of yall critics think he made it to serve it on a plate for yall yo sift through😂

    • @TheTuneUp
      @TheTuneUp  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DAMNNNN 😭 the word I hate the most. I really don't like to be called a critic only because I feel like all critics do is hate on everything. Unless it's supremely left field or overbearingly artistic, they pan it or completely disrespect the artist for creating a body of work. Something I emphasize in all my videos I've done on him, is that I respect his artistry. He's an incredible writer, he's multi talented, and I take nothing away from that, or how much he's accomplished, the music just doesn't move me like it moves others. I make music myself so I go about everything I react to with respect, because I'd hope that anybody watching or listening to me, would be as honest as I am. You don't have to be rude and insult me as a person, but it's perfectly fine if you absolutely hate my music. It's all preference. I'd appreciate feedback or constructive criticism, but I don't like blatant personal attacks, hence why I always show love to whoever it is I cover on here.

    I felt the same on a lot of these songs, honestly. There were some good ones, but on a lot of them I couldn't keep a good beat. It wasn't something I could nod my head to and keep tempo. That bothers me a little in a song. It felt like a messy aesthetic in my ears, and that's not always a bad thing, but it just didn't work for me. Props if y'all can dig it! It's an interesting album, it has a LOT of amazing sounds and just experimental sounding feels to it, but not my cup of tea.

      I also feel like Jon Bellion is often clever just for the sake of being clever. Which isnt alway bad but can make him sound pretty corny

  • @PtylerBeats
    @PtylerBeats 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    “If you like that song, I’m happy for you.” 😂😂😂
    But really, I do love your perspective. And I enjoyed watching this. Even though I’m a huge Jon Bellion fan, I’m not blind to all of his flaws. The only real difference between our views on the album is that his lows are emphasized for you, and his highs are emphasized for me. I think the highs of the production on Mah’s Joint, Let’s Begin, Adult Swim, Cautionary Tales, etc... largely outweigh the lows on other songs such as Stupid Deep. But it all gets very muddy and subjective when you try to explain the pros and cons of the album. Some albums, have a clear line separating what’s good and what’s bad, but Jon’s music is very much the opposite. His music lives in this grey area that only reaches a certain audience, which I feel is sad because he’s so incredibly talented musically. He’s a great piano player, he can play guitar, he beatboxes all of his beats prior to laying them down, he conducts orchestras for songs like Blue and Mah’s Joint, and he’s an incredible music director in general. He’s my favorite Musician. Not even my favorite producer or rapper or singer. Just as a musician. So it’s tough to explain because they way that you explained his music on this review made it sound like you heard what I was listening to as well. I just received it differently. I can easily ignore the corny bars and slow melodies. His strong production and sharp verses are the moments on the album that I look forward to. Adult Swim is so far my favorite on the album, and I wish he would have done something more with that beat in between the second and third beat in that song. It sounded like a Drake Kanye beat. Definitely would have been tight to hear. But I digress.

      Well, my favorite artist currently is Childish Gambino! "Awaken, My Love!" I felt was such a fantastic revival of 70's Funk and R&B! Some of my other favorite artists are Miguel, Pharrell Williams, Prince, Foster the People, Tame Impala, Michael Jackson, Sam Gellaitry, Drake, Kid Cudi, Fleetwood Mac, Mac Miller, JMSN (dude from Detroit who's dope as hell), and Tom Misch! (UK dude who's incredible!) just to name a few! I'm open to all genres so I like to dip in a lot of different things. Some I like more than others!
      Someone else asked about the reason I continued to check out his music. I take suggestions from my viewers and he was highly requested. Unfortunately, for me, he hasn't matched the hype he was given, but I wanted to remain optimistic with album so that it didn't seem like I was bias or intentionally bashing his music, which is never my intention with anything I cover on the channel.

    I think this whole album in general is more of a reflection, and just a creative release. He's messed around with pop melodies and hooks etc. and through each album has experimented with his own sound more and more, which has led us to this. Just look at his collabs in this Album, He goes from working with Tuamie to RZA, to Quincy Jones! I don't know, maybe I'm over analyzing here, but I feel that most of the negative reviews are just from people who are too lazy to dive deeper into the music, because these songs aren't as catchy as All Time Low or Guillotine.

    I'm a die hard Jon Bellion fan, I've been repping him for over 5 years, but this album was very underwhelming and disappointing for me. He's a fantastic producer and writer, but this album seemed very disjointed and fell short of something great. There wasn't a coherent theme throughout, and while some of the melodies were on point, the instrumentals were too abstract/electronic/experimental for my personal taste. I know Pixar/Disney has a special place in Jon's heart, and you can hear echoes of that magical Disney music in the outros of a few songs, but it just doesn't fit within the album itself. It seems to me that Jon had an abundance of ideas and drew from different inspirations but unfortunately bit off more than he could chew in terms of connecting and blending the varying sounds together perfectly. However, I understand that music is subjective and there are going to be tons of fans that love this album, but sadly its a no for me. There are 2 or 3 songs that I enjoyed, but not that I would run back to immediately or add to a playlist. I'll continue to bump his previous albums while I wait for another project from him. Thank you for your honest reaction, and for showing that you can dislike the music but still respect the artist and give credit where it's due.

      Nice to hear from you again! I remember you from all of the Bellion related vids! Yeah, it seems like there was a bit of a disconnect here. Maybe it has something to do with his attitude on this one. I think he’s always going to be great at writing no matter what. That, in my opinion, is his premiere talent!

    I'm a die hard jon bellion fan. but i'm speaking in general. i listen to negative opinions and good opinions all the time for music because an opinion doesn't ruin how a song sounds in my ears. Negative opinions always interest me in an odd way. I listen to a song and i understand the meaning and feel music and the passion that went into a song and i sit there like "How can anyone hate this?" i look at reviews and reactions on youtube and its filled with people who already love jon bellion. then its videos like this when i take off the rose tinted glasses and open my mind to opinions. music is extremely subjective and heavily opinionated, and this is coming from someone gets chills from jon bellions music, sheds tears from his music. Don't close your mind to opinions to any song. Like Jon Bellion said, he's not trying to be some "Digital Jesus" so don't over hype his music. if you truly understand why someone dislikes something you love then you truly love that something. Great video.

    • @SkyVoid
      @SkyVoid 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And also. I get what you're saying. his song Super Deep. i listened to it when it first came out and i was like "Wtf....." but then, the "Making of stupid deep" video came out and i saw the passion, emotion, the work he went through to make this song. When you know the process...simulate the emotion, feel t he passion, here the work that goes into a song...it can change a whole feel of a song. Thats how jon bellion makes his music. you have to Truly LISTEN to music. extremely philosophical but....its just how he makes his songs. if you're not connected to music to that extreme, Jon's music will be like white noise.

      On the contrary! I love different! Especially in Hip-Hop. With everyone doing the same triplet flow, hearing something brash and blunt like BROCKHAMPTON is a breath of fresh air for me! Or with the alternative genre, I mentioned Tame Impala in another reply I sent you, stuff like that, Foster, MGMT, Walk the Moon, Strange Names, The 1975, they all incorporate different sounds and styles! It's just my specific taste, man. For me, it doesn't hit with Jon's music in general, but there are a couple of great records on The Human Condition. I always mention that. I just like him much more as a writer. I think his pen game is amazing! Regardless of everything, I definitely consider him a real musician. He's true to the bone and makes meaningful music. I think for me, I don’t know what it means to have music that you “feel” or music that “hits you.” In my opinion, Jon’s music is exceptionally well crafted. The way he uses producing and sound creation to aid his records is truly unlike most artists in the music industry. It sounds like your able to speak in depth about lyrics but not a lot of the musical intricacies. What is it about the music that doesn’t sit with you? I know people that don’t like Jon’s music as well. I don’t understand why? Can you comment more directly with why the music specifically doesn’t sit with you? I’d love to open a discussion about this. Thanks!

    • @TheTuneUp
      @TheTuneUp  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So sorry for the late reply! Loved this comment!! So, when I say I need to “feel” a song, or I need it to “hit me”, I mean I need to feel every single part of the composition. When I feel music, it makes me close my eyes and I can literally feel the melody in my body. When a song hits me, it means I can dance to it, I can cry to it, I can groove to it, and I can have any kind of experience with it. A song that hits me is a song that impacts me and that just hasn’t happened for me and Jon’s music. Doesn’t mean it can’t, but after hearing so much of his catalog, it’s not seeming like it will, but I will always respect his artistic integrity, his creativity, and what he means to the people that love him 😊

      Respect your opinion. I’ve had this type of discussion with several people in my inner circle; some that love Bellion’s work and some that don’t. But for me, what grands me the most is his ability to combine melodies that resonate with pop genre or “catchy tunes” while also adding a level of intricacy and innovation that I don’t hear a ton from mainstream artists. Would love to know how you value music on each level. What in a song do you search for or yearn for that makes it a song that you like. Because for me, I can’t listen to artists that a formulaic and repeat patterns for the sake of producing as much music as possible. Let me know when you can what makes you yearn for more when you hear an album

    I don't even really like Jon Bellion, but i still wanted to see your reaction so I checked it out with you, gave it a listen and yeah, still not the biggest fan lol. However I am a fan of Dirty Heads. Last time I told you a bunch of songs to react to but I'd rather check out their self titled album for an album reaction. This is their 5th album and my favorite from them. It came out last year and there is not a single bad song on that album. They have lots of reggae vibes as well but they aren't completely a reggae band. They make different kinds of music. They're a band of 5 but only 2 of them vocalize. They both sing and rap. Anyway I'm typing another short novel over here, I really hope you check the Dirty Heads album out I hope you love em like I do.. btw the album is 12 tracks of straight 🔥

    you really gotta be a jon bellion fan to listen to his music and appreciate it, most people just listen for lyrics, and not the production quality and how much work jon puts in to his music, a lot of people also miss the underlying meaning, i saw him in concert back in november when he performed this ablum, and it was incredible, i dont like to see people criticize jon when they dont know much about him. people listen shallowly when it comes to music and jon once said "people who truly listen to music, those are the people i make music for" people also fall in to listening to jons music because of his beats dont fit into a specific pattern, his drum pockets dont fit a specific rhythm thats why some people feel jons music, and some people dont

      100% feel you on this. It’s exactly the same for me with Childish Gambino. Everything you said you like about Jon is kind of identical to how Gambino hits for me. A lot of people hated his Soul/Funk album he released a little while ago and I thought it was absolutely phenomenal. Seen him a couple times in concert and it changed my life every time. He’s the one artist I feel like I can truly relate to. Gambino really excels for me when it comes to production and lyrics. For me, I think it was more of the music not really living up to the hype that it had. I got a lot of comments telling me The Human Condition was going to be the greatest album I’d ever heard, and he’s gonna FLOOR me, and it just didn’t hit for me like that, but I’ve watched a few documentaries of him, seen how he goes about creating, and a lot of inside videos of his artistry! While he may not be my cup of tea, he’s where he’s at in his career for a reason. Got nothing but respect for the man.

I was disappointed, cause everyone was really saying and really recommend The Human Condition a lot. Because they thinking "It's amazing!! He's Talented and amazing artist" But I don't see the point of it for what I'm getting from him.
    For this today now I listen Glory Sound Prep. I was not expecting good or great new material from Jon Bellion. Cause I knew it's gonna be less better than The Human Condition. It was Messing, overproduce and overused instrumental.
    I don't get it why everyone enjoyed Jon Bellion Creative art and work of music. Maybe people enjoyed more and more messing things creativity music. Maybe? I don't know.

    I think a lot of people who make music really really appreciate Bellion’s music. Especially if you have an ear for pop chords, melody, lyrics, with drums that use very very interesting samples and sounds to create really interesting rhythms and swingy pockets. If you don’t have an ear for eclectic pop music, you’re not really gonna like it. He grew up on hip hop, which is where he gets his affection for drums and rhythm, but he is also a huge Paul Simon fan, loving pop music and lyrics. Tbh most people who really love hiphop, rnb, soul, from my experience, don’t love Bellion’s stuff. The sounds and tones are too eclectic for those who love hiphop and rnb, even if the rhythms are very good and often inspired by hiphop, considering J Dilla is one of his idols. The drums and rhythms on this album are even further away from the drums and rhythms of his previous work, other than the boom bap tracks like Adult swim or Let’s begin. Hopefully my assumptions don’t come off offensive as I try to understand how maybe you won’t like his music.

    • @TheTuneUp
      @TheTuneUp  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trust me, this is one of the more mature and thought out comments I’ve gotten on this video. People haaaate me on here 😂🤷🏾‍♂️ it’s all good though. Not like it’s changing my opinion. Gave this album 3 tries and it’s just not for me. Your analysis is very spot on though. His eccentric production choices just don’t vibe well for me. I’m sure, like you mentioned, people that compose music and experiment with drum samples, love what he does. That’s the whole reason AJR’s album sounds so much like Human Condition. It’s tough for me though because I love how (good) R&B is written and I love the groove and soul it has, and I just don’t get that from him. Take nothing away from how talented he is though. He’s got such a great mind for words and he’s truly creative. I’m happy people love him so much.

    • @danielsoriano1496
      @danielsoriano1496 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Tune Up yea Jon doesn’t take much influence from Rnb, outside of the occasional gospel choir elements he uses. But most traditional rnb elements and grooves are present in Bellion’s tones or sample choices. He’s a genius no doubt, but not everyone has to enjoy a genius’ work to acknowledge his immense talent. Kinda like Kanye, the man is a musical genius, but lol now more than ever people are not super fond of Kanye or his work.

      @@TheTuneUp Listening to the song now, very clean sound! I'm talking about the first three tracks on Tame Impala's lonerism, especially the last minute or thirty seconds of enders toi and Apocalypse dreams truly feel like they are cut from the same cloth as some of Jon's breakdowns in this album, like in Blu or around 1:45 of couples therapy, or even the break down in Let's begin... @TheTuneUp  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can definitely see what you mean there!!! A lot of the patterns mirror that of stuff Jon did on GSP! I think another reason it didn’t really grab me was that it didn’t match the energy that was on Human Condition. I feel like he was more engaged in that album, and more zoned into the creation of this one, if that makes sense. I’m wondering if he wanted the music to speak for him more on this record because I feel like he was much more vocally active on Human Condition, so there was another element missing for me with GSP. Even though I may not ever come around to this release, I have no doubt he’ll wow me with another record he writes for someone in the future because he’s such a talented writer 🙌🏾
