Hi, I am Japanese currently studying a master in the UK.
I really like watching your cooking videos and your sushi (especially 巻き寿司) looks very authentic:) I am sure they are nicer than Japanese food I can get here!
Thank you so much for introducing Japanese food to the world:) And I always look forward to your new videos about food from all over the world!

Yes! Finally a tutorial with all the tips I need (plus the rice tutorial which is amazing). I've set a goal to make one special dish per week this year, and sushi is on the list, but I was afraid it would be so complicated. With all this advice I'll definitely give it a go. Thank you so much for these well (and patiently) explained videos!

My wife & I have been huge sushi fans for decades, yet the restaurant prices approach ridicules in LA. So I watched at least 15 TH-cam videos on the subject, and yours by far the easiest, and with your sushi rice video, as well as this one, I managed 56 pieces (about 7 servings) for $25 dollars, and within that cost is the bamboo roller, and 3 years worth of plastic wrap & black sesame seeds, which I added for the fun of it, so the next 8 piece servings will only cost about $2 dollars each, which in itself is amazing, but the reviews were all five star!!! Tons of fun, and not nearly as laborious as the other videos. You totally rock, Steve, and I love your shirts, too! Thank you so much!!! :)

+Steve's Kitchen Is there anything i can use other than Rice wine Vinegar? Will Apple Vinegar or regular one do?

    • @Dr.Turkey
      @Dr.Turkey 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Apple vinegar and other dark vinegars may dye your rice and also change the flavor too much. If you don't have rice vinegar (which should be easy to find in most grocery stores btw) you *might* be able to use distilled vinegar, but that'll have a different taste

Steve's Kitchen Great advice and you were spot on. The first batch of rice was.....well unusable and made it to the waste can. About one minute before it was time to stop the rice from dancing and move over to low heat the Fed X truck pulled in, our dog went nuts and..... I made mush.
Try two was better by far but it was a little sticky and hard to manage. The water on the hands made it possible to work with so off I went. I tried the outside of the Nori method first. Well because it was sticky it worked well but note to self, cut back on the rice and ingredients. Steve this roll rivaled a Hockey Puck. My oldest son said he's seen smaller bike tires.
Onto try three. I opened a new bag of rice cleaned everything up, had a glass of wine and I made a "PERFECT" batch of Sushi Rice. I decided to try the style where the rice is on the inside of the Nori and away I went.
I covered the Nori with a stingy amount of rice, added Guacamole, carrots, cucumber and fresh salmon. I made the role round as opposed to square then sliced it into half inch sizes and plated it up. Feeling cocky I mixed up some Mayo, Sriracha... the kind with the Rooster on the bottle and added a dash of Sesame seed oil. A small dollop on each piece and wha la.......... I made Sushi.
No I didn't save the world but I was proud none the less. Thank you for the video. Tomorrow is Tuna rolls and maybe California rolls as well. Maybe I'll tackle one of your dessert recipes this weekend. Crazy fun.

Hi Steve...this is Gabriel from Quebec, agein...lol.
We love sushi very much. I use a different "technic" to coock the rice, but the result looks quite similar. Ingredients are the same...
What I do to prepare the roll, afther spreading the rice, I put half a nori leaf on top of the rice, then I put the ingredients on. It only change the look....cheers

HI Steve, for the rice on the outside of the roll, is the non-shiny side always touching the rice? Thank you!

I made sushi for the first time thanks to you. It came out okay. 1st time too much rice so ease up peepz. And 2nd time knife not sharp enuff maybe but tasted gd. I just think the package of nori was a little stronger than the restaurant kind. But for a diy it's very good.

If anyone doesn't like how sweet the rice vinegar is, you can buy pre seasoned rice vinegar that is sweet and tangy at the store.

Hello! I noticed you said the vinegar will react with anything metal however you added the vinegar into a metal bowl for the sugar and salt to dissolve. Should I use a glass pot instead for that step?
