    I see no problem using a SD card for operating system on older machines. the PATA standard were only able to push around 25-30 MB/s anyways. on good hardware...
    Seems like a decent "upgrade" - i do it on my PIII 1400. and it works like a charm

    Having been inspired by Phil's Computer Lab's videos on re-purposing Thin Clients as retro gaming PC's, I recently bought an HP T5710 Thin Client for playing Win9x games, along with some early XP-era games. I also ordered one of those SD card to 44-pin IDE adapters, as well as a 32GB SDHC card. I also still have a 16GB SDHC card lying around. For my setup, I was thinking about installing Windows 98 Second Edition on my 16GB card, and Windows 2000/XP on my 32GB card. I still intend to continue using DOSBox to play DOS games, as well as running Windows 3.1, on my more modern systems. And as for playing select adventure games, such as the pre-2002 Humongous Entertainment games, there's ScummVM for that.

    Why SD instead of Compact Flash?
    CF is IDE and the CF to IDE doesn't have any chip, it's directly while SD to IDE adaptor needs a chip that causes delay.

    • @undereasy249
      @undereasy249 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Well I think the main reason is because compact flash is somewhat expensive and unavailable

    • @Druaga1
      @Druaga1  10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Amazon links to the parts used is in the description. Just be sure to format the SD card as FAT32 on another computer before installation. Using the WIN2K setup to format the card seems to cause problems. Your laptop's BIOS should recognize the adapter with the SD card in it as a working hard disk.

    SD cards like the one you used should actually be about as fast as, if not faster than hard drives from the early 2000s. My Dell Latitude D600 (2003/2005) has a 60GB Mini IDE HDD with sequential read speeds of somewhere between 30 - 40MB/s, plus random read/write speeds are much faster because it's flash memory.

    Why 2000 and not XP?
    Anyway, recently I installed Windows 8.1 on a 9 year old Dell Inspiron. I recommended its owners an SDD as a replacement for their dying HDD with Win XP on it. The problem was that XP didn't come with ATAPI drivers for that particular controller, so the XP setup process couldn't even start. But 8.1 worked perfectly fine. Even though it was still SATA 1.5 Gbps, improvement was massive. Boot time was great, 3 Gigs of RAM is more than enough for 8.1 to run just fine (I used to run it on 2GB) m, and the only real problem was the CPU, an old Sempron Mobile, incapable of playing 480p videos on TH-cam, unless you're ok with slideshows. Even GPU drivers for Vista worked!

      It does only because XP has a bitmap-based gui and some more visual effects turned on by default and you can turn all of them off, as well as some unnecessary services. They're almost the same OS, only a year apart.

  • @stealhelm
    @stealhelm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To be honest - the card itself isn't typically the slowdown. I've ran W10 64-bit of an 32GB Sandisk using a sata adapter, and it runs just fine. However a SD-card reader really doesn't do it justice.

  • @ProWilson999

    Just saying that the SD read/write speed is better than some SATA HDD's i have...

    • @definitelythatguyred
      @definitelythatguyred 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hard drives are slower because they have moving parts and SD cards dont but hard drives are cheaper for internal storage

    • @atrueburke
      @atrueburke 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      imo the biggest drawback of using an SD card as a bootdrive is the fact its not designed for it, so it will have a much shorter life span than a HDD or SSD and having faster read and write times doesnt help as it will go through more of its maximum write and read capabilities in a shorter period of time.

  • @npaul4171
    @npaul4171 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great vid! Since you've made this video, Samsung's PRO has allowed 32-64 GB cards with both read AND write speeds around 100 MB/s. I've been using them to run a few OS' and they work for me about the same speed as a performance HDD like an older Scorpio Black. The computer I use runs the SDXC reader through PCI Express, which I think helps because the speeds seem to be more consistent than readers routing through USB 3.

    I actually have an old Compaq Armada M300 laptop, docking station (with cd/floppy drive), etc.. and bought that exact same SD to IDE Adapter for it before finding your video. I wanted to install Windows 2000 on it and ran into the formatting bug you mention. However, I was only able to get my 32gb SD Card to format as an 8063mb drive. Fine really, but was wondering how you pre-staged the format on your SD Card. I tried a Windows 98 Bootdisk, used Fdisk, created 32gb (29,xxx mb) partition, formatted as FAT32, and when I went to install Windows 2000 it saw the partition as corrupt or invalid. Only after I booted off an XP cd and went through the initial setup steps, just prior to copying any files, it let me format the drive, but only as an 8063mb partition. I then cancelled setup (by powering the machine off as it was about to copy files), swapped back to the Windows 2000 CD and tried again. This time it considered the FAT32 partition as valid and let me install onto it. Only problem, it's 8gb in size instead of 32. Again, not really an issue, just messing around, but was curious how you got the full 32gb to work on yours if you remember, @Druaga1

      I haven't used 365 ( libreoffice, Micro$hit keeps getting steamrolled by open source and/or free software lol ). But yes, the fucking squares may sound well but... ugh... not so much in practice, no, not good. they had to use squares... for everything. which makes everything look...flat... flatter than a fucking piece of paper good lord. They clearly didn't have beta testing. If they did... Win 8 wouldn't be such crap.
      I have a question, does windows 8 tend to get, you know, "bloaty"? 'cause that's a problem with WIndows 7 apparently. you install it and it works wonders. after one month it get ultra bloaty and slugish for no reason ( I am thinking about those hundreds of Windows updates... ) .

    I run Linux in an old 4 GB SD card I had lying around (those we used in cameras remember) Xubuntu 16.04 in this case (rock solid version akin to Win7. I run all my Windows apps using Wine (windows emulator) and my whole "windows drive" only takes 50MB of space, which can be compressed down to 20MB for cloud backups. And I can load each app in its separate windows "drive" if I want to, very handy. I dare to say that I'm having better compatibility with old software than I had using Windows itself. They made everything in their hands to turn things into a complicated mess. Blessed be all the linux gurus out there. Life is so much easier now, you guys should try it. It's crazy because I don't even have Linux installed, it runs "live" from the SD card and copy all system files to small RAMdisks, this way the system is lightning fast and you increase the lifespan of your physical disks. It can see NTFS partitions too!! Did I forgot something? I think not, pretty heavy marketing over here huh... I'm just spreading the good stuff out there

  • @derSchweiz
    @derSchweiz 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's not too bad at all, considering back in the days we were using ATA33,ATA66, or ATA100/133. Even if the bus ranges from 33-133MB/s you would be lucky if you can pull average 4-8MB/s off of a legacy IDE drive, which Windows 2000 used to run on. This SD card capable of 30MB/s is already a lot faster. Conversely, the bottleneck of older machines such as the Pentium II or Pentium III even P4 was the hard drive. I recently installed an SSD into one of those machines and the performance was above what I expected.

    I installed Windows XP on a slim PC from a couple of years ago, running a dual core atom and some low spec radeon (or is it nvidia) "card". I use it for older games which just don't run on modern systems. I never installed 2000 so I was a bit surprised to hear you say it is lighter than XP. OK, not TOO surprised. 30mb/s is not bad, I remember having hard drives slower than that (for example an internal WD for my Amiga 1200).

    Does the adapter you are using need power to operate? I looked at this same adapter in your video on Ebay for more detailed photos and cannot find any power connectors on them. So it just plugs into the IDE cable and that's it?
    Years ago I bought one of those IDE to Compact Flash adapters ironically to replace a failed hard drive in a Gateway also running Windows 2000. This adapter uses a 4 pin power cable that would normally power a second 3.5" floppy drive. From the best of my memory, the computer didn't recognize the 16GB Compact Flash card in the BIOS. However a closer shows a jumper pin (5 volts versus 3.3 volts). So how do you know which voltage setting to use? I still have the computer, the adapter and compact flash card. I thought I'd give it another shot one day.

    • @thetechconspiracy2
      @thetechconspiracy2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      James S Laptops use a different form of IDE that has power on the pins.

    • @turbofiat
      @turbofiat 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I ended up trying that IDE adapter/32 MB compact flash drive in a newer computer and installed XP on it and it works but it hangs up at times. Since then I recycled a 1 TB SATA hard drive from an old Dell Laptop that literally fell apart and it works great. Does using an SD card work any better than a compact flash card as far as hanging up? Does it work any better running Windows 2000 versus XP? I'm thinking there are less programs running the background with Windows 2000 than XP and that may explain why it may work better.

    Just added a CF drive ( Lexar 1066 mb's ) to old asrock K8NF3-VSTA motherboard self build and my experience has been that the read times are great but the write times in certain situations takes about twice as long, I believe this is because of a lack of hard drive buffer or too little buffer. Normally a sata drive has as least 64 Gb of buffer, these cards probably have little to none because the hard drive buffer is located on the camera's motherboard, also I shortened my boot time by 17 seconds after installing the chipset drivers, now it only takes 45 sec to get to the desktop after a reboot.

    You have to isolate the PCB of the IDE to SD adapter if it is almost on a metal surface. Otherwise you will have a short circuit. That is also probably why it stopped detecting the IDE to SD adapter.

    if anything, they should also develop an interface that allows one SD card to be recognized as a Floppy disk drive, hard disk drive, and CD-ROM drive all from one card reader for old computers. I mean, we might have these following files on one SD card in the future:
    a .img file (floppy disk)
    a .vhd file (hard disk)
    a .iso file (CD-ROM)
    in theory one SD card could serve as a multi-device emulator for the hardware level.

    Kewl, can you install Windows vista on that?

  • @fakofakoson1667
    @fakofakoson1667 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Boy you could easily install Windows 8.1 (x86) on that card and still install a tiny lot of updated software for productivity and light gaming ( my current 8.1 setup takes only 18.7GB with updates and all).
    If you chose to upgrade the card to a microSD class 4 (using the SD adapter) or higher it would even be way faster, I did that on a HP mini 1020la through the built-in card reader leaving the entire 160GB HDD for storage.
    The wonder of that is I don´t need to dual boot or anything (that sometimes is not as simple) I can boot XP or 8.1 simply by swapping cards. The only little trick to get XP rolling was to use RUFUS 1.4 to prepare the files to be installed on USB media as the reader is detected as USB despite being built-in.
    For the driver issues on any Windows version from 2000 and higher you can use a freeware tool called slimdrivers by slimware utilities, it automatically searches for the drivers online after scanning your machine and let´s you choose which to install......
