The brother doing the interview is not very experienced at interviewing he keeps repeating himself and asking the same questions and cutting in while the brother is trying to explain. He should use a notebook and make a list and sequence his questions properly and in order. Still interesting guy to interview.

A very interesting and genuine discussion! I would have liked to hear more storys from Zaff. But i understand that he perhaps doesn't want to share his sins. Its always interesting to see the people from the previous generation and the way the differ from the current. Back then life was tougher and people had more reasons to go down a bad path. Today the youth go down the wrong path because they think its a cool way of life, but in reality most of them have no real need to do so. It's very sad that that which Allah hates is loved by our youngins.

Just viewed this video and most Asian youths growing up in inner city ghetto areas in the UK can relate to this brother in some capacity. May Allah swt forgive us all. I was born in Bham (81) and grew up in Sparkhill (Adrian Rd) and life was organic without the hype of social media. And very family orientated in/out of each others homes, birthday parties, Eid, basically any excuse was a good one for a gathering. Food on the go, door forever ringing and the house packed with people of all ages. I remember going to mosque after school just like every other kid from my road at 6/7 years old, but we started to hang out on the streets whilst parents thought we were in the mosque. Friday was a treat day cos we had £1 pound to spend and it was value for money unlike now. We would roam around the streets and get into petty fights with other kids, and got chased by Sparkhill Warriors when they were much older, not sure why to this day lol. Having older cousins from different parts of Bham I grew up before my time and aware of criminality/violence. I even witnessed a multiple stabbing at a wedding in Aston (90s) and I just stood there without any effect on myself. We moved to London in the early 90s but still had connections to Bham. It was probably the best move my parents made due to the diversity of the capital city. I was not limited to just Pakistani community, which I love to bits and proud of, but my mind was developing. My parents never attended my parents evenings so I didnt put in the hard work and this was an issue in our community which has changed now. If you don't know what your child is doing in school then you don't know about their street life. I mixed with black kids but met my apne in my mid teens and they were pushing differently. Alhamdulilah I didnt have to be involved but they were my freinds. In my early 20s I realised we have choices in life and I made mine. I cannot disclose what my profession is for obvious reasons, and I made my parents proud, including myself. Not sure if the wider family was happy, maybe couple of exceptions. The point I make is anyone can get wrapped up in the wild West but keep your imaan and be open to opportunities that pass by everyday.

My cousin's live in 67 Adria Road !!! Sparkhill warriors were my younger brothers crew !!! Ganja , Sher, Pete, Jamil, turkey , gutty , Mohamed and the rest from Betty's arcade !!!. They were only having a laugh with you guys !!! To them they ran sparkhill park and it was their territory !! This guy being interviewed grew up across the road from me on Hillfield Road . It's the one where there is a petrol station on the end . Opposite the gates to sparkhill park on the Stratford Rd !!. I know his parents and his whole family !!! Sparkhill is now a total mess !!! Kebab shops everywhere and rats roaming the streets !!! . The only thing changed is they knocked down the swimming baths and rebuilt a new leisure center !!!. You are the lucky one who got away !!! I moved out of sparkhill in 1999. Best thing I ever did.

One pattern I've noticed of failed Muslim communities is the Peer Culture of the Sufis that are prominent in the community.. Its become like just believe in a peer and do what you want he'll pray for you and save you on the day of judgment.....

    MA.
Bonus points for use of Patwari/Mirpuri, and for praying to A (SWT) for a daughter. _Thumbs up_
One of these days, we'll need a panel of young people who do a full Patwari/Mirpuri podcast session. (Either here or elsewhere?!)
Also as someone who lived (and continues to return to Birmingham), and worked with people around those areas mentioned, Br Zaff is pretty spot on about the demographics and crimes. Stuff gets pretty surreal, pretty quick. I learned not to speak about them outside of the country as people find the experience hard to relate to, believe in, or process mentally no matter how normative and 'basic' the stories are (because it's part of a mainstream European community and doesn't add up to the idea people have of UK).
Faisal: can I recommend that you bring Tariq Jahan (who lost his son in the Birmingham riots) as a possible future guest? He's also from the region.
