    Congrats, guys! It was nice running into you all in Curacao. Man that's a hell of a refit, but you can't lose. No brainer. Good on ya! You've got this! The only thing you need is drive. Listen, when you need a break and some sea time we'd love to host you guys. Come give us a visit. Much love, we'll be watching the progress! -James, Ana, & Luna

      Thanks for the comment James. We’re in for a bit of work but as everyone keeps telling we’ll take our time and really stay fresh. I’m sure it’s all too familiar with you and the Oyster refit. Sounds amazing. We’ll keep an eye where you are in the world. Fair winds, Kieran and Isabelle 🙌🏼

    Yeah the master is a simple build............with an overlay on the existing bed over the rudder. Only needs a lift-able panel to bridge the gap.
    Yes you may need to either remove the roll over brace panel.................or raise the bed, which you may have to anyway in order to clear the rudder box..
    I know - easy to type - and means getting your head around it. PS: I have done it before.

      So am I. Not for 6 mths, but the next 18 mths or so given they haven't done anything of this work before. Or they might be able to hire the entire yard's crew to do it/help. Anyways, congrats to a seemingly splendid purchase, on the note that there has been an extensive ultrasound check for hidden cracks and delamination.

    One of the things I would be doing is to try and evaluate where the stresses were and to carefully check critical load and seal areas. e.g. Chain plates, bow fitting integrity, hull deck join, keel and rudder. And evaluate how specific sections were constructed and how they may have stood up to impact or deformation. I have found that carbon fibre is a great way to really increase strength in repair work. It ended up being far stronger than original.

  • @dougfaulkner6799
    @dougfaulkner6799 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    First off, congrats on the purchase. There are alot of unknowns with a project of this size and scope. The hull/deck joint is going to be a major concern due to the nature of the collision. You'll need to inspect the keel bolts for sure and i personally would replace them. The rudder issue may not be that bad but will still be difficult. As far as the mold issue, you already have some very good suggestions on that. You definately have bought yourselves alot of a labor for love project but as we sailors all know, we are just crazy enough to talk ourselves into projects others would run from lol. I know you'll accomplish this. Lastly about the double bed situation, id pull that out and build a center queen walkaround. You should be able to source wood where you are that would be suitable for the project, and by tearing it all out you will gain much needed access to areas you will need to get to for rudder repairs. Just my 2 cents. Best of luck you crazy kids lol.

    We used to have lots and lots of mold problems in our damp basement and solved them with a Borax solution. Borax cleans mold and mildew and, more importantly, leaves a Borax residue that blocks and stops mold and mildew from coming back. I don't recall exactly what the formulation was since it was nearly fifteen years ago that we used the Borax. I believe it was a Borax laundry detergent we used for creating the mixture. I believe you can find the specifics easily enough on the internet by a query about Borax as a Mold cleaner and blocker. My guess is that TH-cam will have some "how to" videos about mold blocking with Borax.

    The reason why Amel boats have stainless steel rails around the boat is because Henri Amel suffered from severe vision loss and he wanted to build safe boats even he could sail. That is why they have electric furling sails.

      @@SailingMerewetherThe damage to your boat doesn't appear to be too major. Did all the damage occur above the water line? Is the mast destroyed or is it still usable, I wonder if there is any super maramu's that are being scrapped or have been scrapped you might be able to get parts from. Those boats definitely hold their value really well and the age of the boat doesn't seem to matter much when it comes to pricing, I have seen 1991 models priced the same as 2001 models.
      I have a habit of browsing boats for sale at night before bed. It is rare to see a super maramu listed for under $200,000 usd, I was surprised when I saw one listed for $162,000 the other night, it was a 1992 model that doesn't look like anything had ever been updated on it. One major drawback to the super maramu is the use of proprietary parts which are out of production or very expensive. You got an amazing deal on that boat at $20k and even if you spent $100k on repairs and refitting you would still be in it for $40k less than the cheapest one currently on the market.

    Congrats! Your old is caused by high moisture content INSIDE the Boat. Take some fairly flat tubs and fill with Kitty Litter. That will absorb the ambient moisture, To soak up additional odors place some Baking soda boxes open here and there

    The great thing about a bigger, longer, boat is that it also comes with more beam! It's what makes an on-the-water home more livable. Interesting watching this after following Sailing Nandji going through much the same process, also in Malaysia (and Thailand). Their new boat is roughly of the same size and offers the same welcome advantages compared to their previous boat (a 38ft Roberts, from memory). With Nandji 2, too, I think, it's the greater beam that creates the sense of space rather than the length of the boat. The basic layout usually doesn't change that much between a 38ft hull and a 50ft one. I love Amels, French designs, built in France. Personally, I am also a fan of ketches, I used to have a ketch-rigged 45ft trimaran back in the day, originally based in Darwin. I lost the main mast overboard (another story) and took the opportunity to change it to a sloop rig, something I regretted afterwards.

    • @SailingMerewether
      @SailingMerewether  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve never heard of a ketch rigged trimaran! Sounds like an awesome boat. We’re very happy with the purchase. We’ll see what the future brings

    • @leonaessens4399
      @leonaessens4399 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SailingMerewether Oh yes. Must confess I have never seen another one, either, come to think of it. When I turned it into single-mast sloop rig, I was kind of unprepared for the difference in sail handling. For one thing, the new mast was taller by a considerable margin, and because it had also moved a foot or so back, the new mainsail ended up becoming quite a lot bigger than before. My wife used to call it the "murderer" on account of the desperate battles we fought whenever we wanted it to come down! Reefing was also something we tried to keep to a minimum, I tell you... This was a time when everything still required muscle and a lot of shouting. No electrics on my boat, either, I had no electric start for the engine, meaning that whenever I had to start it, I had to jump down the gangway, swing right, race into a tunnel leading under the centre cockpit to the engine room, and start the thing by way of a flywheel-and-crankhandle arrangement! It was a pretty good Yanmar, though.

But u need special chemical to direct clean sticked mold especially in the head and galley😊

    Your best friend is going to be a steam cleaner to get rid of the mold.
    And obviously getting the holes patched to keep the water out, and getting a fan going to dry the inside of the boat out, getting it dry is going to be critical in getting this boat right.

    Welcome to the Amel family 😊 We have an SM2k hull 347, the SM is slightly different so beware when people tell you about their SM2k’s, although most owners are aware.
    You asked about getting damp off the cupboard linings, I found a great product to do this with but bought it in the USA. It’s called “Mold Armour Spray” . If that fails and you need to replace it then we bought some new lining from the U.K. slightly different colour but it seems to look ok . I can let you have the details if you wish.

    Beautiful boat and a huge job but it will be worth all the time and money it will take.
    I've done three major project like this and I can say you will get frustrated, irritated, and overwhelmed at times. The demo work is kind of fun and it goes quickly, then you have to figure out where to start the repairs. I use lists to help me stay organized.
    A list of each job with a break down list of what materials and tools will be needed so that I can order things and have them on hand when I am ready to start each job. For your project I would have a lot of lists so I would make a master list after making all the individual jobs lists to put the order of jobs in an organized manner. Many jobs can't be done until one or more other jobs are finished.
    Part of many of the jobs will be researching the best way to do it (remove mold for example) and what tools and materials you will need. With the internet the research is so much faster than it was for all of us who lived B.C. (Before Computers). It will still take countless hours online but all the information is there... somewhere.
    When you feel overwhelmed, don't look at all the work still to do, just look at your list and do something, anything, and just keep plugging away. It will get done but it will take much longer and cost a lot more than you think possible now.
    I'm looking forward to the rebuild adventure!
    Attitude = the difference between Ordeal and ADVENTURE!

    I just purchased an SM Hull number 369. This is my 3rd Amel. Best product I found to clean the felt that is all over the boat is Starbrite Mildew stain remover. I think its mostly Clorine but it works well. I am sure you know about the Amel owners' site 20 years of knowledge on there and good people ready to help. I have seen Amels SM with severe hurricane damage be brought back. They are very strong and well made. Your rudder leak may be just the stuffing box system that is part of the rudder. hopefully its not cracked just needs new flax and tightening. Good Luck!

    Depending on width, I would say Centre the bed and push it as far as you can to port or starboard. Hopefully you will have room to get between the cupboards and the footing of the bed. Easier to make the bed and when sweeping and cleaning. One of you will be on watch so no need for a big bed. A double bed would work well. If you can fit a water proof cam to the bottom of the nose cone or the top of the keel so you can see if you are in. Shallow water. I did it and it worked well. I put mine at the top of the keel. Drilled a small hole for the wire and used a rubber grommet with some secoflex. No water leaks. Good luck to you both..

    well, at least you bought a boat that is WORTH rebuilding.......it will most likely take a lot more to fix it properly than you suspect NOW, but the reward will be worth it, because the "Bones" of that boat are very stout...good luck kids.....OnWard.....

    wow what a find.....you can get the hull ultra sounded to make sure there isn't any hidden damage (Sailing Uma just had it done if you want to see how it works) there are many channels that have rebuilt damaged boats , Sail life has the most extensive coverage on how to do any type of refinishing and fiber glassing. When it is done you will have the most fantastic boat....cheers

    Congratulations, you have a mighty fine vessel there for a fabulous price. Now you’ll spend the true cost of your new home. I bet it’s worth every penny.

    Get a mobile aircon on board asap it will do wonders for your liveability & mould. Your probably best to also replace the mizzen standing rigging. You'll need to sand back the hull around the impact area to look for delimitation or you maybe able to get it ultrasounded. Grab a heavy duty tarpaulin and completely cover that forward hatch area that should have been done as soon as you got aboard. Replacement of the chain plates for the main mast is probably necessary.

    I’m doing a major refit on my SM163 and have been dealing with many of the same problems you are. For the moldy material, you can remove it, either with a steamer or just by generously spraying it with very hot water and then gently peeling it off. Then just wash it with detergent and oxy powder. I’m also building the master berth athwartships so it will take either a full queen (160cm wide) or 2 80cm standard mattresses (the French standard length of 190cm didn’t go well with my 188cm height). You need to check for delamination of the bulkheads and stringers. I can show you some examples of what to look for (my first surveyor missed it). I’ll connect with you on the groups!😊

    Hi team, What a great buy. Certainly looks like a few months of fun. My suggestions is to get an ultrasound of the fibreglass then seek some advice from a structural engineer/shipwright. The original drawings should be available and maybe the builders can supply the laminating schedules?
    Putting my ex-sailmaker hat on…If you can when you get the new mast flick the in mast furling as it’s a massive compromise in performance and a Royal pain to furl. Trying to furl in-masts in rough conditions is dangerous and you can’t have a roach on the sail which means you are down a know or two in boat speed. A boom bag with lazy jacks and a full batten main is totally the way to go. Best of luck. Can’t wait to watch your progress. Chris

    You should be able to re-use alot of the aft cabin joinery to make you new bed and keep the same look with any necessary new cabinetry made and finished to match , swap the 2 single bunk sides over to make the new sides of your double and start from there? - e.g. look at the way Magic Carpet have re-used existing joinery in a new cabin layout.
