The 'soldier' is Rick Schroder, a child actor, who directed this video. He absolutely wanted Brad and Alisson to sing it for him. The children at the funeral scene are his real life kids.
My father was a WW2 vet, a Navy pilot, and I showed him this video before he passed. He had a short wartime marriage that basically lasted the length of his deployment. She walked into the mess hall when he first returned to the US, a thousand miles from where they lived, and demanded a divorce, then turned on her heels and left. He heard plenty of stories about what she had been up to while he was away. When he passed I found all of the letters she mailed him during his deployment, in a box in the attic. They were full of young love and information about home and family. There was no clue of any problem. Anyway, when he saw this video he was just quiet, then nodded his head. It hit a little too close to home for him.

This song is so very sad. Everyone seems to only feel sympathy for him. I feel it for both of them. If you pay attention to the actual video you can see that this was not set in our time. It seems to be in the WWII era. There is no telling how long he had been gone, how long it had been since she had heard from him. They didn’t have means to communicate almost instantly like we do now. You can tell her devastation was as crushing as his.
How people can’t wait a year, I don’t understand. Both my husband and myself are active army. I’d never ever do that to him… not just as a spouse but a fellow service member. I’ve seen so many cases like this and it’s heartbreaking. Your spouse is out fighting for you and your families freedom, but attention/getting off is more of a priority. Don’t get me wrong SMs do their own shady stuff at times but the lives Ive seen destroyed after going through this is insane. Survived war but couldn’t survive the heartbreak. I’ll just never understand.

Back in the ww’s and Nam era remember all they had was written letters and that happened sporadically as they didnt always have down time to write. So she was not aware he was coming home i doubt she would have been in their bedroom when he came home. Sometimes the men made it home before the letters made it home. I’m a military wife and heard this happening a lot after the gulf war. My husband was in a unit in Germany that was in the field a lot and some of the wives gave the rest of us a bad name. Men assumed that as the husband was going out the front door the lover was coming in the back. At the end of the video they came back together as spirits/ghosts and the little girl was the only one that could see them together.
I highly recommend listening to some more of Alison's other stuff. Her voice is one of the purest I've ever heard. Baby Mine would be one of my recommendations.

"Oh they didn't have the same means of communication, she didn't know he'd be home that day, he was gone for a few years and she was lonely..." none of those poor excuses justify cheating. Husbands go risk their lives overseas just to come home and lose their lives from the PTSD or from the heartbreak caused by a whore who couldn't keep her legs closed.
