Maybe pay them a decent living wage.

For me it’s just insanely long 2 plus year long hiring process

Maybe if we respected our first responders like we use to you wouldn't have this problem, nobody has their back, I don't blame them one bit.

Thank you my area is volunteer. I’m 38 and I started at 16. It can be a thankless job.

$50,000 a year before taxes, insurance premiums, 401k contributions, becomes $35,000 a year after all those deductions to do a stressful blue collar job where you can lose your life or have a crippling injury that’s not something most people want to do.
I wouldn’t want to do that job for that type of pay, you are better off owning your own business if you have a trade like electrician or plumber or carpentry.

I do it for free, it ain’t worth the job to get paid. I got my day job that does a lot better, and volunteer on the side. Going through the academy, and half of the class (included) said they have no interest in going career. Never mind the addition of EMS, let the medics do that, for those departments that do both fire and EMS, medical swamps the shift, outnumbering legit fire calls upwards of four fold.

Biggest take away .... The hardest part of the job is getting in the door. It's how they treat you after you retire from the job. Take a hard look at Baltimore City Pension System for Fire/Police before anyone ventures down this road as a career. Constant UNDERFUNDING from the city to the system. All members made mandatory contribution every payday. Martin O'Malley derailed a system that has been in place for decades. Then he leaves town and hides in a closet somewhere. City underfunds... and then blames the Fire/Police for the shortfall. Pensions cut AFTER you retire. Hefty Health Care premiums plus taxes. Too many Chiefs and not enough Indians is another problem. 27 years on the job, 15 years retired and struggling. Do you really want this job?

Pay well enough and you won’t have enough time to go through all the applications you’ll receive. Gtfo.

One of the things a manager/HR will look at when filtering applications for employment is the applicants work history. The very first question when looking at work history: Is this person stable, or does their job history show them changing jobs every 6 months? Failure to stay at a job for any length of time is a huge red flag and a good way to have your resume file thirteened (figuratively thrown in the trash) by the manager/HR.
Very few people understand that reverse of that is also true. If you are looking for a job, and you come across a business that seems to always have help wanted signs posted, or claims to be always short-staffed, that should be a huge red flag to you.
You should ask yourself what is this business doing or not doing that is resulting in the business's inability to retain/hire employees. Or you can save yourself some time and just avoid that business completely.

This career is only for a specific few, a dwindling work ethic and mentality of servitude is more and more uncommon in our youth. The culture of take what you can from who you can is now king.

I would assume it is because no respect and legal backing for them. Its every other day i hear of a lawsuit against first responders for breaking their house windows out to save their kid, or breaking their ribs preforming cpr to revive them.
Besides the few people that truely care and show appreciation, most people just get on fb and say something that makes themselves look good.
"Shout out to the first responders and my new keto diet"
Goes to post a picture of them flexing muscles in their new local FD shirt.
Frankly i would not care to put my life on the line for these aholes either.

They cant hire and they dont run ambulances? Must be a crappy work life in NC. Where Im employed day in and day out ambulance runs for nursing homes will destroy any ounce of motivation you had in the beginning. Id be running the a dept like Raleigh if it existed in my area.

That isn't a requirement. It is a requirement to not be a moron, which means you won't be getting a call from them.

After 9/11 everyone and their mom wanted to be a firefighter or a cop. Now, with all this defund the police shit and more and more people not wanting a job where you're away from your family days on end risking your life for 40K a year, being a firefighter isn't the glamorous job it used to be to the younger crowd. Not to mention COVID cuts killed retention.
