He had his head down the whole time but I find the bigger issue is the fact that Lindros was well away from the puck when he got hit. Even back then that's at least a charging call.
crazy how the game and especially the rules have changed. Then, it's a good, hard, clean check, the concussion is an unfortunate aftermath. Now, 20 years later, that'd be a 5-10 game suspension for head contact (even though Lindros had his head down as usual)
Jeff Wood The irony is that Lindros was criticized for taking off games after his concussion as players, management, fans and media questioned someone’s toughness back then. Primeau came back the next game after a concussion and it ended his career as he still feels effects today. It’s amazing how much has changed in sports regarding physical play compared to today.
@Puckman637 He did lunge. You can see from several angles that at the last moment he powers his elbow and shoulder forward into his head. It was well timed, and way more than just momentum.
@@patrickdogherty Definitely lunged, but the standard at this time was that you couldn't leave your feet or get more than two strides of a running start before a check. Kaspar didn't do any of those things.
@Shabazz Rgt He didn't tell a half-truth. No one is required to rattle off every trait about a guy when discussing him. You know what, you told a half-truth too by that standard. You only mentioned his hockey talent. You forgot to mention that Lindros was a right-handed shot, was from Ontario, and had a younger brother who played hockey too. Stop telling half-truths. Either say every possible thing about the guy, or say nothing.. Or, you know, don't accuse someone of "telling a half-truth" when they aren't. The guy called Lindros an egomaniac. That's true. There's no rule that says he needs to acknowledge the guy's on-ice skill along with it.

@@Davidjon1946 Thanks! I kept it neutral, so people will feel free to open up, about which era they align with... And what their feelings are about the two contrasting eras of the NHL... One thing we can all agree on, is that the NHL has changed a lot, since back then. It feels like a whole different game, watching it now, compared to this era of play... For better and for worse!
I mean, I’m a diehard pens fan who started watching hockey during this era. I always appreciated Kasparitis in a way I didn’t, say, Matt Cooke because kasparitis tried to lay hard, clean hits as opposed to leaving his feet like Cooke often would. That said, to pretend that a guy making contact with another guy’s head shouldn’t be a big deal is insane to me. We missed out on potentially one of the greatest seasons of all time by Sidney Crosby because of unnecessary headshots, and we missed out on prime years of a generational talent like Lindros because of multiple headshots. I understand in the case of Lindros there is a what goes around comes around element to it, as he actually did play the game in the same vein as a Tom Wilson does today, and it often looked like he had intent to injure (which I think is the main reason the Pens bench congratulated Kasparitis here). That said, a hit like this one being taken out of the game doesn’t lessen the product. Kasparitis didn’t knock the puck loose with this hit, and Lindros wasn’t making a play on that puck considering he had lost it in his feet almost directly after he received the pass. The more chances I have to see elite players play the game, the better the product is. Although we all agree Lindros needed to learn to keep his head up when he was in traffic, it still sucks his career was cut short in no small part because the rules and the officiating of the late 90s and early 2000s offered a big player like him almost no protection whatsoever.
@@v4v819 I quit watching hockey in 2007 ,because all of the great players I liked of the 80's and 90's were pretty much gone and the guys that replaced them really didn't impress me at all. You never want to see anyone get knocked out, but what a great hit. It was interesting the announcer talking about his brothers career being shortened by concussions, and it sounded like he was aware of "CTE" in 98.
People knew about concussions then but what no one understood was how to diagnose one without symptoms and when a player was truly ready to be back on the ice again. Back then, the logic was once the headaches, blurred vision, etc. stopped you were good to go. Now we know the brain isn't fully healed and playing in that state leaves someone vulnerable to second impact syndrome. Needless to say Lindros was probably returned to the ice too soon multiple times over concussions in his career. Plus we also know there's a hereditary component to susceptibility to head injuries which is why players like the Lindros family and the Sauer family all seem to have had concussion related issues.

Lindros always got his bell rung when his head was down. Scott Stevens knocked him senseless also. I hope these guys are in good health now. Hate to see anyone get hurt.
The contact would have been to the upper chest if Lindros didn't put his head down. Even today that's not a suspension. at least if they follow their own rules. It's Lindros' fault. Clean hit. Didn't leave his feet.

John Connor it doesn’t matter “who’s fault it was” he even said “shoulder to nose” it was clean back then but today we are smarter and realize after players like Lindros that hits like that can end someones career and are not okay. @@21sled I don't think he said it's okay to head hunt. He said the hit was okay because it would have been at Lindros's shoulder if he didn't put his head down. That's true.
But even if the NHL was the same style of hockey in the 90's which really was not that long ago and kept it today I probably still wouldn't watch because the players today don't feel larger than life to me and they are not nearly as skilled and as talented as the players who played in the 60's,70's,80's and 90's which is a fact, the head retard Gary Betteman has taken a game that millions loved and turned it into a Fruitcake game.

Whenever I need to smile I watch this !

Kasparaitis isn't Russian, he's Lithuanian. Idiot. And if you don't like the violence in hockey, don't watch it, douchebag.
B Sheppard if i was a flyers fan my anger would be at the penquins players who laughed And not darius who did his job, i concur with you.
It’s unbelievable how long Lindros has his head down during the play
Kasparaitus gave a lot of stars fits. I think thats why Pittsburgh got him. He was such a pain in the ass to Mario that he made the team aquire him.
Absolutely. One of the reasons that the Pens made that deal was that they got tired of having to play against him....especially Mario.
