There are two main types of concrete pump, line pumps and boom pumps. We elected to go with the boom pump for this job for several reasons. Foremost was to avoid knocking loose clay back into the foundation trench, which has been a problem all along with the construction of the forms, since the trench is very narrow and quite deep.
The boom pump can reach a long distance and bring the concrete directly down onto the correct location. It accomplishes this with multiple sections of long arms, hydraulically controlled, that can reach over walls, landscaping, and whatever else might be obstacles between the road and the cement form.
The boom pump is quite user-friendly and versatile which accounts for its popularity on a variety of different types of builds.
As always, the concrete arrives in a mixing truck after the boom truck is in position. The mixing truck transfers the concrete into the hopper on the back of the boom truck. The concrete pump on the boom truck pulls the concrete from the hopper and forces it through the hoses and valves that are mounted on the boom arm. Auxiliary hoses can be connected to the end of the boom as needed.
The hydraulic pump on the boom truck is normally a two cylinder pump with the two cylinders working in opposition. The material cylinder pulls the concrete out of the hopper and the discharge cylinder pushes the concrete into the hose which carries it to the end of the boom.
A twin-cylinder hydraulic concrete pump’s internal workings typically consist of two parallel cylinders. The cylinders have drive pistons inside them that move them back and forth in opposite directions. As one cylinder moves forward, the other moves back. As one cylinder moves back, the other moves forward.
