This is a little different from my usual vlogs. I kind of just jumped through the day and got a few shots but I wanted to share a few things from our day to day life. Abbie had a rough start to her day. Sometimes she gets mad or frustrated and she simply can't communicate why. She gets herself worked up and bites herself hard enough to leave bruises. It's heartbreaking for us that we can't fix what's wrong so all we can do is help to keep her from hurting herself.

That Abby kissed her showed too that doesn't mean anything bad or to be mean, at that moment she just can't handle the situation and communicate what she wants.

I love your sweet Abby. I came across your Channel earlier this week, was involved in your live chat. You guys are amazing! I don't have autism, but I do suffer from mental illness. As a kid I had a hard time expressing my emotions and would last out, hit, bite, pull I didn't care. Being yelled at and poorly restrained, it just made things worse. You're so gentle and kind when Abby is having a meltdown. 💜

I am a new subscriber and your family is so kind and loving it's refreshing!! I have a question and I hope that it's not too intrusive. How do you and your wife and even your son have enough energy to keep up with life and the demands of an autistic child? I am exhausted just watching. You all seem to be 3 steps ahead of Abbie so that you can keep her safe and all the mental stimulation you also provide can be so taxing. I know this doesn't compare but I am my mom's full time caregiver, she is in a wheelchair and has limited movement. I dress her, bathe her, handle the housework, dr. Appts... (you know the drill, I probably don't need to explain) and I am drained. How do u not crash?? Is it a strict schedule?? Thanks again for sharing your lives very inspiring!!

When my ears first opened up, and all the loud noises were torturing me, I would end up banging my head on the desk. Teachers and peers knew I was sensitive to loud noise, but they got mad at me for it. This was about 5 years ago. If my test results say I'm autistic, that could be why was never able to "adjust". Also, it will explain a lot of traits I had. Actually, it'll explain everything. I think if I was born so closed up all the time, I would've had sensitive hearing from the start. I've always been sensitive to smell and would hold my breath in a bathroom or near any kind of garbage can or dumpster. I still do. My mother tells me I use too much air freshener. She told me that I couldn't touch certain things when I was little, so I was sensitive to touch. I kinda grew out of some things, but I still can't touch a spider web or anything slimy, sticky, or moldy. Just a few months ago, I learned about autism, and my mother told me she used to try to get me tested for it. She told me everything, and now I knew that I could've had autism. I also learned of sensory processing disorder which was common in autism, and it explained my sensitivity to sound, smell, touch, taste, and bright lights. My mother isn't as supportive of it as you, though.

Abbie, please don’t hurt yourself! Don’t bite yourself! Sometimes things are frustrating, better bite in your Chemie or run through the house or scream as loud as you can or try flipping a gum against your arm or press an accupressure ball. A long time ago I injured myself. Now I regret it, my arms are full of scars. I know you can find other ways to deal with frustration or inner pain. Your parents will help you because they love you. And it hurts to see a loved one injuring herself. 👋 - maybe your parents tell you what I’ve written to/for you.

I never want to appear to be exploiting the challenges of autism but I feel it's important to share that it's not all rainbows and unicorns. I think you document it really well; it is important, like you say, for people to understand the full extent of what autism can look like. We often get people say how happy our little boy is but he lashes out regularly, but people don't often see, so don't understand it. Thank you again 😊

I have always found that it works to deal with SIB to direct it to something else. Like if you feel like hitting your head hit it against something soft/something that won't hurt you if your head hits against it, I found the body shell of my X-MAXX car works quite well for this purpose

I had a cousin with PICA (iron deficiency-based) and he used to take bites out of couches & the sponge parts on the older style headphones! He was 3 at the time. I remember thinking it was so bizarre but also so amazing that at 3 years old, without the knowledge that sponge type stuff is made of iron, the body has you craving it! Biological science is so cool.

Hey man my son is in the middle of 2-3 as far as diagnosis. When did the aggressive behavior start? I noticed Abby is older than my boy, did they rate kids 1-3 when she was diagnosed? This video is so scary man (my boy is 4) any advice on what seems to be the beginning of our aggression?

I cut up my son's pizza into pieces with scissors and also him sandwiches. If I don't, he does the same thing...tried to shove the whole thing in his mouth.

Ok I need a little help. I have autism and I love to swim. But I find it really hard in public swimming baths, especially when they're crowded as they are on weekends. Unfortunately the only time we can go is on the weekend. The other day I had a meltdown in the water and was hurting myself to try to stay in control of how I felt. Has this happened to you guys with Abbie and what do you do? Please help.

Man. This is so much like my life. Joe doesnt self injure, but strikes and bites me. I have had to restrain him just like your wife did in the video until he calms.

Hi! I subbed. I have HFA, have you tried any techniques with the arm biting that produces stimuli somewhere else. Most of my stimming comes from where i have a bad feeling, smell, taste or just something on my mind. Does she use the chew thing all the time, or does she have a blanket or anything she uses to help calm down. i use my watch and blanket. I just noticed when you were holding her arms she looked scared. I dont mean this bad in anyway. I know you love her and know whats best, im just asking and sharing because we have similarities. She looks really happy. Thanks for sharing your days!

+Loving Life and the Ocean When she is like this she's angry. We don't know what about all the time but often it's because we are doing an activity or going somewhere she doesn't want to go. She bites herself out of frustration. It's a coping mechanism so we are trying to teach her ways to cope that aren't self injurious. Thanks for watching.

I helped my son reduce aggression and improve in speech and social skill with the help of Dr Oyalo herbal supplement I got from TH-cam here. His herbs work perfectly

Hi guys. New viewers here. We'd love to learn more about Abbie ❤️💕💙. What are her interests? Is she going to a mainstream school? Does she like watching herself on TH-cam? Our kids think it's mildly amusing to see themselves on their iPads.

My daughter I found gets worse when I say it's ok. To her it's not ok. Her aggression is much worse if I'm not close enough to absorb it she directs it at herself. My daughter is much more aggressive to herself and others. When I switched to saying It's not ok I'm sorry it's not ok right now but it will be ok once you calm down. I promise it will be ok soon. Once I started that the episodes would last 1/4 the time and once she calmed down enough to hear me she would show me what she needed once she was able to regulate herself. I know your kid doesn't have the aggression issues mine has but maybe by refraining from going immediately to it's ok you might be able to able to get her out of melt down faster and she'll feel more understood.

Hi, just love your vlogs so helpful!! just a quick question, does Abigail have a sign/gesture to ask for food if hungry (or does she not graze/snack during the day). if she does have a sign, how did you implement this!
such an amazing family you all make! x

    • @fatheringautism
      @fatheringautism  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, she signs "eat" and also uses her iPad to communicate specifically what she wants. She does snack all day. She seems to never be full, lol. She gets a few scheduled snacks throughout the day in between meals but we often tell her "no, not right now" or that she has to wait until snack time or she would eat non-stop.
