My wife worked for a company that gave up on interviewing millennials because they were so entitled and making demands during the interviews, this is a much better method there are good millennials out there ya just gotta weed through them, besides aren't we partially to blame, we allowed the destruction of their education system.
Entitlement isn't the same as making demands. In an interview is the time to make clear the things both parties require, that's capitalism. If your damn good in your field of work you can be demanding and should ask for money, benefits or any requirements.

The employees are owed whatever they and the company have ironed out as compensation for their work. Nothing more and nothing less, and only so long as they continue to work. Likewise the company is only owed a days work from the employee for a days pay. Its a reasonable arrangement.

I'm tired of an interview being a one way street, you interview me, and I interview you, and we can both assess each other. Not surprisingly, interviewers are a bit shirty over answering a list of my questions - none of which are unreasonable or cheeky, by the way.

For years I used to research prospective employers to see if I'd be a fit. I, too, always had a list of several questions I hadn't been able to find answers to and there were generally a few points which came up during the interview where I wanted clarification. I completely agree that an interview needs to be a 2-way street. If it isn't then you risk becoming a company doormat in some firms

I have a small landscaping company, the vast majority of helpers i have put up with had no work ethic and no skills, not even being able to use a rake or snow shovel! Don’t say “It doesn’t matter how you answer” and then follow it up with “if the answer is no, you don’t need a job with us.” According to him he is just looking for people to make their answer and stand by it, yet it seems like even if they were to have solid reasoning, if that answer wasn’t his answer, you’re out. I kinda like this approach. After starting my own business (from nothing) I too know that the work ethic is often more valuable than many so-called "skills". Getting ahead is about attitude. Many CEO's of big corporations started out as the office gofer, sweeping the floor and making coffee. And they showed their worth by having the right attitude.

JCDenton 2012 not to nit pick here but with a gun fatality is less likely depending on ammo used there are plenty of non lethal options on market vs a sword or any other bladed weapon which requires skill to use especially if you are going in without the intent to kill there are so many major arteries that a small cut will cause the assailant to bleed out in minutes. It's not an entitlement to expect paid vacation time from your employer. It means you are respected by your employer. Yes, in the first year as well. And limited sick days makes no sense for me. If you are sick, you are sick. Cannot work properly or you will infect your colleagues. Will you fire somebody who is in the hospital after a car accident just because no sick days left? The people he is trying to weed out will cost money to train, more money in low productivity and entitlements, and severance (and possible lawsuits for being entitled SJWs). Bad employees are often worse than none at all. They cause others to walk on eggshells around them. Others have to cover for them while they are taking long lunches, coming in late and leaving early, and so on. Good employees will leave if the bad ones remain for long.

Like he said at the beginning, the answers don't matter as much as the way they're formulated & presented. 2. As to the nature of the questions, he implies that a lot of his client base is strongly patriotic, probably conservative in nature. Therefore, it would make sense to hire people who feel strongly about patriotism and who are conservative in nature. No use hiring a liberal whose values would clash with most of his clients. Imagine sending over someone who thinks the armed forces are brutal killers to a client composed of mostly veterans. That wouldn't go over well.

Matter of fact, I worked for a company that enjoyed a continued growth rate during my tenure as COO of 20.75% per annum extended over 12 years in that position. It grossed sales in the billions for the last 6 of those years and never filed any form of bankruptcy. So, who's f*cking sad now?
I'm happy to say my youngest, who is 22, worked hard to put herself through college, got the degree she wanted (with an emphasis on Computer Science at my insistence), and is now both working fulltime and pursuing a masters in the field of her chosen profession - Library Science. Always been a self-starter, up and out the door without anyone having to tell her, great grades right along, and friendly, talented, and beautiful inside and out. The next older daughter went into the Army straight out of highschool, now has a four year old after two years in service, and going to school and working full time. Wish I could take credit for it, but they managed themselves to find a way to get what they want through work. Maybe not typical millenials, but certainly enough to make any dad proud.
As a long-time teacher I have found that good parenting cannot be over-emphasized. I'm guessing your kids are also humble because they got that from their parents. I thought he did a decent job of trying to avoid political affiliation, at least in this interview, when the reporter really wanted to talk about it. I think that any self-entitled person, regardless of political affiliation, won’t get a job there. It just so happens that the majority, or at least the VOCAL majority, of leftists have a sense of entitlement. That doesn’t mean they’re all like that, or even that MOST of them are like that.
Mess8424 it's at least explicitly worded to avoid political bias, but a lot of the questions still overlap with very political implications (policing and how it should be carried out and questioning how much of what one earns is entirely their effort and not in part due to the circumstances they're in), or at least they are in the United States. The exception is the one about crying, I think. The rest still carry a heavy political connotation in the States afaik.
Leong Kin Wai I realize that, and while a couple questions are a bit questionable, if he truly does “grade” based on quality of answer/argument rather than their specific answer, then it’s not a problem. Like he said, a lot of his clients are very patriotic. Someone who is at odds with police officers or military would not be suited there, because this company needs to make money. Like the fact he said entitled to 4 weeks of vacation…..Hmmm I wonder why the US has one of the lowest work Place morale of the western World....There is ALOT wrong with our system over here in Sweden, that NOT being one, we get 2 weeks first year (unpayed) and second year its 5-6 weeks depending on Company, and im pleased to say we have alot higher productivity aswell as morale. Unlimited sickdays, you cant help if you are sick, (aslong as you show a doctors note).
People become more productive when they have vacations. No need to grind yourself through work when you produce a lower percentage of work for each hour spent at work. I don't want to waste my life working my life away for some smuck like that that makes me "earn" my vacation on his terms - for all we know he could think that for every year you work you've "earned" 1 day of vacation. I like the Danish system better - the economic productivity is about the same as in the US, but they work 5 hours less/week than Americans and have a legal right to 4 weeks and paid vacation each year. 12.5% of your pay (is added on top of your regular pay) goes to paying for your vacation. That money is paid out when you take your vacation. So if I make $20/hour then I get paid $2.5 into my vacation time or a total of $22.5/hour. In that way Danes truely work for their vacations and aren't at the mercy of their boss to say when they can take a day off or not.
Translation: he pays the Federal minimum wage. He will never raise your salary no matter how long you work for him. He is the type of boss who calls you in your day off, at non-convenient times, to show up to work, and you can not say no to him, because he thinks he is doing you a favor for hiring you.
For a marketing company that has to cater to specific clients, I can see why these questions are relevant just as long as it doesn’t matter what an applicant’s political affiliation is.

I thought this test would be a way to weed-out snowflakes (some that could be quite useful) but, instead, it turned out to be a test to weed-out opposite political views (someting that is quite disgusting). This CEO is bound to find out, the hard way, sooner or later, how damaging to a business it is to not recruit critical, intelligent and engaged candidates just because they might think differently from him.

Unfortunately, I work for a nonprofit where I still don't get vacation or paid days off. They hired me as a contract worker so they don't have to withhold taxes, provide worker's comp, etc. I had to answer a series of questions to retain my job and when asked what motivates me in my job I simply answered my clients. I work with individuals with intellectual disabilities and with no benefits, only 2 raises, and 11 directors in 16 years what else could I say. Yes, I've worked there for 16 years.
20 years ago every construction company’s ideal employment candidate was a bright eyed bushy tailed kid in their early 20’s. Now we’re happier hiring a 50 something even though we know he’s got busted knees and a bad back and he’s gonna be slower than the 20 something is capable of going. The 50+ candidate is gonna show up every day, Isn’t gonna spend 20 minutes pretending to shit 4 times a day so they can play with their phone, and even though the 50 year old doesn’t have the endurance of the 20 something he’s gonna push himself harder. Seriously seeing the difference on site over the years is appalling. Though I will say the odd millennial who has a work ethic (rare but does happen) and smarts(common sense and a mechanical aptitude not celebrity knowledge and an understanding of all things woke) has had their path up the ladder cleared by lack of any real competition. Got one myself just over a year ago now and am grooming him for leadership even though if he entered the field 20 years ago he would have seemed unremarkable. These are the times and regardless of what we have to work with someone needs to fill the top roles and someone needs to be being trained for it so the position can be filled with relative smooth transition in case of the unforeseen. To the young people (mostly men) with a good work ethic and some brains. Don’t hate the snowflakes. Those dipshits have made you look great by comparison. I can only echo your observations. In my last firm we went through 4 apprentices in 2 years. One was constantly on the phone, lazy and workshy. He got through his training and actually qualified. His sense of entitlement was partly based on the fact that his grandfather had been one of the firm's founders (but was no longer involved). He was sacked for incompetence and laziness which really shook him up. We had all tried to warn him. The second one was bright but took so many sick days without doctors certificates that he was eventually disciplined, He was hauled-in no less that 5 times in a 9 month period before they dismissed him. The third one also thought the firm owed him a living. By the time he was in his second year at college (1 day a week) he had not bought a single tool (tradesmen in the UK are expected to have at least a basic tool kit) and even when you took the time to show him how to do fairly basic jobs and loaned him the tools and showed him massive amounts of patience he'd slope off half way through something leaving your tools there on the floor and just disappear for an hour or more. His work ethic was non-existent. The last guy was a nice enough kid - a bit slow on the uptake (gaining him the nickname "Speedy"), but he came to work on time every day, asked advice about what to buy next for his tool kit, stuck at every task you gave him (and apprentices traditionally get some awful jobs), and always asked about what was being done elsewhere in the company so that he might get the chance to learn something else. Almost every one of the older guys were happy to spend time teaching him because it seemed to stick. TBH he would have been regarded as sub-par back in the 1980s, but one day I'm sure he'll be an excellent carpenter, if never the fastest. When he took his final exams his tutor thanked the firm for allowing him to build-up such an excellent and broad spectrum of work in his portfolio. He was also the one kid who didn't confuse the confidence borne of years of experience on top of good training with arrogance, Something the snowflake generation seem to do regularly. The employees are owed whatever they and the company have ironed out as compensation for their work. Nothing more and nothing less, and only so long as they continue to work. Likewise the company is only owed a days work from the employee for a days pay. Its a reasonable arrangement.

I'm tired of an interview being a one way street, you interview me, and I interview you, and we can both assess each other. Not surprisingly, interviewers are a bit shirty over answering a list of my questions - none of which are unreasonable or cheeky, by the way.

For years I used to research prospective employers to see if I'd be a fit. I, too, always had a list of several questions I hadn't been able to find answers to and there were generally a few points which came up during the interview where I wanted clarification. I completely agree that an interview needs to be a 2-way street. If it isn't then you risk becoming a company doormat in some firms

So your company will do society a greater service if it goes under than if it becomes profitable.

He can do what he want and if you want to have a test that shows if people have similar values to the company and yourself, then sure, all I’m gonna say is be up front. Don’t say “It doesn’t matter how you answer” and then follow it up with “if the answer is no, you don’t need a job with us.” According to him he is just looking for people to make their answer and stand by it, yet it seems like even if they were to have solid reasoning, if that answer wasn’t his answer, you’re out. Which again, is fine, but don’t make it seem like this test is anything more than a pass/fail based on your answers.

The fact that only Fox News thinks this is a laudable achievement speaks volumes about this guy and his business. This CEO has already shown his stupidity by publicly acknowledging a bias against people who don't necessarily think of themselves as "Americans" first and foremost... Let's be honest, he's looking for hard-core "patriotic" conservatives -- liberals need not apply. I say "stupid" because by publicly acknowledging his bias, he has hurt his business, because any potential clients who see this and feel like they're on the wrong end of his litmus test will treat him the same way and hire his competition. So, years from now, all he will have are like-minded staff and like-minded clients... a recipe for a non-discrimination lawsuit if ever I heard one. Then the final nail will be when his client list is made public and there is some connection with a known hate group or other criminals, which he will be unable to dismiss as random if all of his clients share the same "mindset".

I kinda like this approach. After starting my own business (from nothing) I too know that the work ethic is often more valuable than many so-called "skills". Getting ahead is about attitude. Many CEO's of big corporations started out as the office gofer, sweeping the floor and making coffee. And they showed their worth by having the right attitude.

JCDenton 2012 not to nit pick here but with a gun fatality is less likely depending on ammo used there are plenty of non lethal options on market vs a sword or any other bladed weapon which requires skill to use especially if you are going in without the intent to kill there are so many major arteries that a small cut will cause the assailant to bleed out in minutes. Just my thought on it though.

It's not an entitlement to expect paid vacation time from your employer. It means you are respected by your employer. Yes, in the first year as well. And limited sick days makes no sense for me. If you are sick, you are sick. Cannot work properly or you will infect your colleagues. Will you fire somebody who is in the hospital after a car accident just because no sick days left? The people he is trying to weed out will cost money to train, more money in low productivity and entitlements, and severance (and possible lawsuits for being entitled SJWs). Bad employees are often worse than none at all. They cause others to walk on eggshells around them. Others have to cover for them while they are taking long lunches, coming in late and leaving early, and so on. Good employees will leave if the bad ones remain for long.

1. He's a marketing CEO, meaning he probably needs people who can confidently present/sell a position/idea to others, regardless of the merits of the position/idea. Like he said at the beginning, the answers don't matter as much as the way they're formulated & presented.
2. As to the nature of the questions, he implies that a lot of his client base is strongly patriotic, probably conservative in nature. Therefore, it would make sense to hire people who feel strongly about patriotism and who are conservative in nature. No use hiring a liberal whose values would clash with most of his clients. Imagine sending over someone who thinks the armed forces are brutal killers to a client composed of mostly veterans. That wouldn't go over well.

Matter of fact, I worked for a company that enjoyed a continued growth rate during my tenure as COO of 20.75% per annum extended over 12 years in that position. It grossed sales in the billions for the last 6 of those years and never filed any form of bankruptcy. So, who's f*cking sad now?

I'm happy to say my youngest, who is 22, worked hard to put herself through college, got the degree she wanted (with an emphasis on Computer Science at my insistence), and is now both working fulltime and pursuing a masters in the field of her chosen profession - Library Science. Always been a self-starter, up and out the door without anyone having to tell her, great grades right along, and friendly, talented, and beautiful inside and out. The next older daughter went into the Army straight out of highschool, now has a four year old after two years in service, and going to school and working full time. Wish I could take credit for it, but they managed themselves to find a way to get what they want through work. Maybe not typical millenials, but certainly enough to make any dad proud.
As a long-time teacher I have found that good parenting cannot be over-emphasized. I'm guessing your kids are also humble because they got that from their parents. I'm wondering, too, what you think you can take credit for. If you were asked to present to a group of parents of middle-aged kids, what would you say?

One of his questions specifically asks about the religion of a prospective employee, which is not particularly wise if you understand the law. I don't believe for a second he built any business from the "ground up". This is a guy who came from the upper middle class suburbs and thinks that because he had to work at the red lobster as a teen, this means he really understands overcoming adversity. It just so happens that the majority, or at least the VOCAL majority, of leftists have a sense of entitlement. That doesn’t mean they’re all like that, or even that MOST of them are like that.
Mess8424 it's at least explicitly worded to avoid political bias, but a lot of the questions still overlap with very political implications (policing and how it should be carried out and questioning how much of what one earns is entirely their effort and not in part due to the circumstances they're in), or at least they are in the United States.
The exception is the one about crying, I think. The rest still carry a heavy political connotation in the States afaik.

People become more productive when they have vacations. No need to grind yourself through work when you produce a lower percentage of work for each hour spent at work. I don't want to waste my life working my life away for some smuck like that that makes me "earn" my vacation on his terms - for all we know he could think that for every year you work you've "earned" 1 day of vacation.
I like the Danish system better - the economic productivity is about the same as in the US, but they work 5 hours less/week than Americans and have a legal right to 4 weeks and paid vacation each year. 12.5% of your pay (is added on top of your regular pay) goes to paying for your vacation. That money is paid out when you take your vacation. So if I make $20/hour then I get paid $2.5 into my vacation time or a total of $22.5/hour. In that way Danes truely work for their vacations and aren't at the mercy of their boss to say when they can take a day off or not.

Unfortunately, I work for a nonprofit where I still don't get vacation or paid days off. They hired me as a contract worker so they don't have to withhold taxes, provide worker's comp, etc. I had to answer a series of questions to retain my job and when asked what motivates me in my job I simply answered my clients. I work with individuals with intellectual disabilities and with no benefits, only 2 raises, and 11 directors in 16 years what else could I say. Yes, I've worked there for 16 years.
20 years ago every construction company’s ideal employment candidate was a bright eyed bushy tailed kid in their early 20’s. Now we’re happier hiring a 50 something even though we know he’s got busted knees and a bad back and he’s gonna be slower than the 20 something is capable of going. The 50+ candidate is gonna show up every day, Isn’t gonna spend 20 minutes pretending to shit 4 times a day so they can play with their phone, and even though the 50 year old doesn’t have the endurance of the 20 something he’s gonna push himself harder. Seriously seeing the difference on site over the years is appalling. Though I will say the odd millennial who has a work ethic (rare but does happen) and smarts(common sense and a mechanical aptitude not celebrity knowledge and an understanding of all things woke) has had their path up the ladder cleared by lack of any real competition. Got one myself just over a year ago now and am grooming him for leadership even though if he entered the field 20 years ago he would have seemed unremarkable. These are the times and regardless of what we have to work with someone needs to fill the top roles and someone needs to be being trained for it so the position can be filled with relative smooth transition in case of the unforeseen.
To the young people (mostly men) with a good work ethic and some brains. Don’t hate the snowflakes. Those dipshits have made you look great by comparison. Get into a trade and work from the ground up don’t pay for university courses that will stick you in an over crowded job market with mountains of debt.

Tim N what sort of work we talking about? you just described the reason I quit my last job. my coworkers where so damn lazy, I found myself doing my work and their work. I don't mind helping, that's part of teamwork. But I'll be damned if I'll be doing X2 the job for them to play with the phone. heck my boss cried when i quit xD And only worked there for over a month xD
I can only echo your observations. In my last firm we went through 4 apprentices in 2 years. One was constantly on the phone, lazy and workshy. He got through his training and actually qualified. His sense of entitlement was partly based on the fact that his grandfather had been one of the firm's founders (but was no longer involved). He was sacked for incompetence and laziness which really shook him up. We had all tried to warn him.
The second one was bright but took so many sick days without doctors certificates that he was eventually disciplined, He was hauled-in no less that 5 times in a 9 month period before they dismissed him.
The third one also thought the firm owed him a living. By the time he was in his second year at college (1 day a week) he had not bought a single tool (tradesmen in the UK are expected to have at least a basic tool kit) and even when you took the time to show him how to do fairly basic jobs and loaned him the tools and showed him massive amounts of patience he'd slope off half way through something leaving your tools there on the floor and just disappear for an hour or more. His work ethic was non-existent.
The last guy was a nice enough kid - a bit slow on the uptake (gaining him the nickname "Speedy"), but he came to work on time every day, asked advice about what to buy next for his tool kit, stuck at every task you gave him (and apprentices traditionally get some awful jobs), and always asked about what was being done elsewhere in the company so that he might get the chance to learn something else. Almost every one of the older guys were happy to spend time teaching him because it seemed to stick. TBH he would have been regarded as sub-par back in the 1980s, but one day I'm sure he'll be an excellent carpenter, if never the fastest. When he took his final exams his tutor thanked the firm for allowing him to build-up such an excellent and broad spectrum of work in his portfolio.
He was also the one kid who didn't confuse the confidence borne of years of experience on top of good training with arrogance, Something the snowflake generation seem to do regularly. I wish him well for the future
