    Thanks for the walk through of the lens. You saved me he experimenting I’d have done otherwise.
    I just got one in perfect exterior condition for £95 -the drawback being a tiny amount of fungal growth on the front element but nothing affecting image quality so far. At that price I’ll take an educated gamble. 😊

      Burst mode, lots of time, and get them used to you hovering around them. I might take 250 photos and 1/2 might be great to keep. And shoot around f/16-f/18.

    Thank you for the review--I particularly liked the results this lens delivered for your photographs. I just purchased this lens this past winter and now that it's spring I'm just taking it out for a test drive. Can you expand on why this lens, when shooting Macro, cannot open higher than a F 3.5 on my Nikon D7500. I've been trying to get the narrowest depth of field by opening the lens to it's fastest aperture of 2..8. It's something basic that I'm not understanding completely.

    • @MannsWoodlandPerspective
      @MannsWoodlandPerspective  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Glad you enjoyed.
      The elements move away from the aperture the closer you focus. As it does this the effective aperture lowers and the camera reads this to you to assist with exposure.
      No different than a telephoto lens like the 150-600.
      At 150mm it's f/5. As you zoom out, the glass moves away from the aperture. So at 600mm the aperture is further away so the effective aperture is f/6.3.
      If you want to read down the rabbit hole, search effective aperture for macro photography.

    I have one and use it on my Canon EOS 90D. Not only for macro though, I tend to take it along on city trips as well, it's a terrific moderate telephoto lens and it renders beautiful details on buildings etc. It also is very usable for product photography...
    Beautiful example images!
    I also have the 150-600C + Sigma TC 1.4, but that is another story. Excellent lens for moon photography.

    • @frankdecock2735
      @frankdecock2735 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      0@@MannsWoodlandPerspective On a crop sensor camera like the 90D it might be better to get a 60mm f/2.8 macro, however, I'll not be trading it in as I love the image quality. It outbeats my Canon L-glass on the 90D, the Canon glass didn't have enough resolution for the new sensor, not even my 70-200 mil f/4 L mk. I which is a terrific lens for the 70D crop sensor... So now I've switched over to Sigma (18-35 mm F/1.8, 105mm f/2.8 and 150-600 mm f/5 - f6.3 C, and a Tokina 14-20mm f/2.0 which is also a very sharp and, frankly, stunning lens. A pity for Canon's lenses, but hey, they don't care, they only develop new RF lenses for their R-series system camera's. See if I care :)

    I just bought this lens because of the pretty good reviews, and the price, for my Nikon d5600. I tried it a couple of days and I'm a bit disappointed by the results. As it is fairly heavy, compared to nikon lens I have, i find it hard to be stable enough when holding it, even when OS is on. Compared to the same kind of shots with my nikon 70-300, images are not as sharp. Maybe it's because of the 1/2 sec delay, when the focus is done, for the shutter to be released. When shooting insects, it's a lot of time and it gets out of focus. As you mentioned, the OS doesn't really help for close-ups. Looks like the tripod is necessary, but with birds and insects, it's not optimum.

    • @joss1videos
      @joss1videos 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looks like the tripod is necessary, but with birds and insects, it's not optimum. For close-ups, image quality is great when shooting on a tripod, but not when hand held.

    • @MannsWoodlandPerspective
      @MannsWoodlandPerspective  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's really not an action lens. To get sharper images you need to stop down the aperture and have a faster shutter speed and it's ok. It's also very dependant on what camera you're on. The D5xxx isn't know for great AF performance.
      The Nikon equipment equivalent are more expensive and probably newer. The Sigma EX series of lenses are older than their current line up. But price to performance nothing really comes close to this lens.
      A 70-300 lens is also not a macro lens so it's not a great comparison for bugs ect.
      For macro you will always need a tripod when first learning how to do it.
      This lens is probably the sharpest lens I own, even using it on the Nikon Z7ii for macro work on bugs and flowers.
      Bugs need to be stopped down to f15-20 to get enough of the insect in focus in one image.
      If you want the entire bug in focus at once, you need to take several dozen photos at different focus areas (focus stacking) and combine them in Photoshop.
      Macro photography takes an entire new skill set to learn to make it work well.

    I am really thinking between the Canon EF 100mm f/2.0 and this one. I would use that 100-105mm focal length for street stuff. I know it isn't the most suitable solution, but as I saw that range can really help to "blend in and spy". Both has roughly the same price here in my country. The extra brightness and faster AF is really appealin on the Canon, but the stabilizer on the Sigma also sounds good, and I bet it is much more suitable to manual focusing if you want to switch, I heard the Canon isn't really strong in that regard. Also, I have a feeling this Sigma is sharper. Can anyone confirm that?
