In their defense the Japanese was invading and expanding in the pacific and they were pretty brutal in their occupation. So it's a duty for pacific men at the time to help participate in the war effort
These Fiji Troops were sent to Malaya to protect the rubber plantations owned by the British Colonists. These plantations were on land illegally taken from the local inhabitants by force. The rubber tree saplings were brought in from South America (also obtained by force). To operate these these plantations, British brought in Indians from South India (Madras) and kept them confined as slaves. Their offspring's remain in Malaya today and are at the lowest level of society. The Fiji Troops were poorly armed, found the jungles of Malaya formidable and were able to capture only a handful of insurgents. These locals, labeled 'communists', were well trained and fortified by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II. In the end, Fiji Troops went back in defeat. Malaya was rescued from British Colonialism and became a independent country. And,. plantation control transferred into local ownership.
