Excited to bring you guys along with me while I crochet my largest wholesale order to date! I'm very honest and transparent in this vlog in terms of pricing and why I don't think I'll do wholesale in the future. You're not a machine. You don't give that big a price break. Wholesale is more work more pressure. There are no machines to duplicate crochet.
Noooo don't reduce the cost of plushies when you already have a lot of orders! 💔 I never thought of the cons of wholesale so thanks for sharing!!

I’m recently getting into crochet, but I paint and draw and a rule of thumb for pricing I was given was to base your price off of an hourly wage. For example, if I set my hourly wages to $15/hr and I can crochet one mini bee in an hour, the price of the bee would be a minimum of $15, then you can add in cost of materials. I used to set a timer for 2 hours for pet portraits and charged $50, with my hourly rate being $20 and $10 for the paint, brushes and mediums and it was a, easy way to figure out prices since I couldn’t for the life of me figure it out.

I did the same thing with my iPad! I had the 11 pro and I liked it, but I felt it was too big. Sold it to my mom and bought the Mini. LOVE it. It’s so portable and usable.

I don’t crochet but I do wholesale. I would suggest you raise your pricing even for wholesale if you plan on doing wholesale because trust they are probably charging way more double or triple what you charged them. I make candles and my smallest candles are $5 a candle for 4 oz candles which is less time than your bees. Please charge more.

Maybe you can put your socials or Etsy shop on labels and attach them to the plushies, and it can be like a marketing investment. You could get some new subs and potential repeat customers out of it. The shop owner shouldn't have a problem with labels if she's not trying to pass it off as if she made them, and in the end she's still profiting from your generous discount. ❤

@@crochetbygenna yes!! I second this! definitely do this! I make my own tags at home, i print my logo onto a thicker paper and whole punch it and tie it on each plushie like a tag (i do this at markets as well and I have definitely noticed a difference in follower gain and recognition on my insta) because not everyone takes a card or notices who/where they bought an item from.
I love these long vlogs, please make more if you can! I just have to say that these videos are so well made! I love watching crochet videos while I crochet lol, I’m making a star shaped bag right now!

Hi! I personally don’t do any whole sale however I know a little bit, maybe reduce the bigger ones by maybe 30% and the smaller ones by less or some not at all, that way you are still making decent gross profit and are still getting the orders.

omg i feel you, i have had people reach out to me for wholesale asking to take 30% of my profit which i just think is far too much, and I totally agree, crochet is not very wholesale friendly because it benefits small businesses that can easily mass produce things (such as stickers, alibaba goods, etc.) but handmade items (especially crochet) are very labour intensive and not great for wholesale. I do wholesale for 1 person (Strawberryboots) and I love the way she does wholesale, she lets me decide how much to sell my items to her for and the price she can sell them at, plus I get to advertise my items at her store as well which is really nice, but i haven't found/had anyone else give me a better offer than what she does. I mostly make larger items and custom items for her (not just small items).

I am just learning to crochet but I have previously sold cards that I made for Christmas and homemade birthday cards. I definitely found I could not sell the cards at a show as I could not make them cheaply enough to make it worth it. Some of my cards were 5 hours plus so asking 8 dollars seemed reasonable but did not sell well. I feel your pain in this one. Good that you are learning what works for you and what doesn’t. Careful about crochet needles on planes. Some TSAs are strict about it and may deny it 🥲 research your airport and the one you'll be flying to/from just in case!

My wife and I used to own a candle making company.
We had a few stores ask us about doing wholesale.
We dropped our prices of the candles by $1 of what we sold candles at trade fairs.
That still made it profitable for us without killing our margins.
I couldn't imagine cutting handmade plushies that much.
Wholesale can be good, but don't cut yourself short.

Wholesale for crafting is different than for resale stores!!! I've done Wholesale, but the highest crafters should go is 30%. Resaler's buy from manufacturers that have 100's of employees and machines that produce the product. That's why they can offer 50% it costs them less to make. We don't have machines or assembly lines that produce our products. You also have to set a quantity that they must purchase to get the discount. I offered 6 pieces of the same item for 20% off and they must spend at least $100.00. If they buy them by the dozen I offered 30% off, but they had to spend at least $250.00. Just remember we are hand making our products without machines and assembly lines. Our products are HAND MADE. Don't giveaway your profits. Love all the products you made they are so adorable.

@@crochetbygenna you’re welcome, if I go on vacation I might need to go on a a plane and I know planes can be strict with what you can and can’t bring so it’s probably something others are probably worried about too! :)
Not sure if anyone mentioned or not but your chubby dinos may be different sizes due to other factors not just tension. For instance, the dye process changes the texture or strength even in the same brands of yarn. Which maybe what is happening.

Many years ago, all of the eyeglass places had opened in the mall and they started running those ads for buy one pair, get the second half off. We saw an ad in the local weekly paper for an optometrist where he said buy one pair, get the second at full price. Ha we laughed but we started going to him and wound up being customers until he closed up shop and moved to Florida. I didn’t realize until then how that message was almost secret code for “I’m going to put the same amount of effort, care and quality in the second pair.” Years later when I started selling some hand knit and felted items I was discouraged by how so many people seem to bake in the idea of “if I buy more than one I should pay less” which might make sense when there are some big costs that are being amortized over a large shipment which already has a profit margin embedded, but when people are making things by hand it’s discouraging. I know wholesale adds a different component into the math and I’m not sure what the answer is but I’d alway err on the side of asking for a fair price for your effort, time and creativity!
On a funnier note I really enjoyed the reverse evolution of watching a duck turn into a dinosaur…or at least a dinosaur part!

Wholesale hasn’t even been an option for my small business for the same reasons~ handmade items aren’t cheaper when done in bulk because the amount of time it takes to make each item is exactly the same… 😅 I’m surprised that makers can actually wholesale crochet, as I know it takes ages to make anything, plus your materials aren’t exactly cheap!
