- James IV (17 March 1473 - 9 September 1513) was King of Scotland from 11 June 1488 until his death at the Battle of Flodden in 1513.
James was a monarch noted for his political, cultural and military skill, who assumed the throne at the age of 15 following the death of his father in controversial circumstances. During his reign, he strengthened royal control, expanded the Scottish navy with ships such as the Great Michael, promoted culture by establishing the first printing press in Scotland, and supported scientific and medical advances.
His marriage to Margaret Tudor sought to consolidate peace with England, although he ultimately led the disastrous English invasion in 1513, culminating in his death at the Battle of Flodden, an event that decimated the Scottish nobility and marked a critical point in the history of the kingdom.
Despite his achievements, his death did not have the honour of a royal burial, as his body disappeared after being taken to London. He was succeeded by his son, James V, still a child, leaving Scotland politically weakened but with an enduring cultural and naval legacy.
