Shooting Landscapes with a Long Lens

- Landscape photography isn't all about shooting with wide angle lenses. I'm in Deadvlei in Namibia and in this video I photograph 2 landscapes and both with a Canon 100-400 lens. This allows me to isolate subjects within the landscape and pick out more varied compositions that I could using a wide lens.

Your videos are like therapy. We not only learn how to click better pictures, but also how to live the entire experience. Thank you!
Did anyone else hit pause on the video and attempt to visualize how you would compose the shot in your head or just me? HA! I always wanted to go on safari for the wildlife, but now I need to roll down some of those sand dunes. Great work!
Even I did so....
Thomas, I just want to thank you for sharing your process. I am a self taught amateur photographer and have learned a lot from your inspirational videos. I normally shoot wildlife but have recently started exploring landscapes and I’m loving it. Your work is amazing and I’m always looking forward to seeing more from you.
I've only ever really shot landscapes with telephoto lenses, just love the compression, and makes it easier for me to isolate something interesting. Lovely photos as always
The sense of adventure I get from your videos is astonishing. Your photography and your thoughts are deliberate and helpful. Thank you for putting all the work into these.
I really enjoy the calm and serene style of the way you produce your videos. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and process with the world!
Oh Thomas, the tree photo is ethereal! Love the light and the color of the sand. Brilliant....Bob
11:01 that is the most beautiful image you have done in ages, its simplicity, the colours, composition, subject matter, just utterly sublime!
Ok...So i had to come and watch it again. I cant say how grateful i am that you share this with us.
This has been a great series. It's been very relaxing to watch. There looks to be some lovely peaceful scenery over there.
Simply stunning. Especially that first image.
I'm a bit lost for words. That landscape, place, just.. out of this world. I love it. Might be my favourite place that I've seen from your channel. And you travel a lot. Fantastic image as well. Captured the mood completly. Thank you for sharing your passion Thomas!
When you first wlked up on the group of trees. All I saw was a Salvador Dali landscape. What a great contrast in that shot.
The cinematic quality of your videos has grown astronomically in 2017. Can't wait to see what adventures you bring in 2018.
That composition is absolutely gorgeous. I never thought of Namibia as being on the bucket list, but then what do I know? It is now!
Thomas, it has been a privilege to be following you for a fair bit of time and have watched and re-watched many of your vlogs. The Namibia series really has been epic and each week you put up images that engenders such emotion. I certainly see why this has been on your bucket list....Thank You taking us with you
Love the tree shot Thomas. The old country saying, " Making a silk purse out of a pigs ear" comes to mind. You really made something out of nothing there. Brilliant.
Gorgeous compositions. The Black and white photo was absolutely stunnin. You are a great inspiration to all of us. Thank you sir
Ha ha. Oh Thomas, I've been shooting more than one image (of the same composition) and in the back of my mind thinking "Thomas would be upset....". Now I see you DO take more than one image (sometimes). Great stuff as usual mate. Thanks!!!
Another beautiful video, thanks again Tom, not only a learning experience, but gorgeous places most of us will never see revealed, wonderful.
still so very happy that i found this channel! best landscapes channel on youtube!
Absolutely amazing landscapes to shoot photography in, I can understand your struggle to find a good composition, it definitely takes more than being in an amazing and beautiful location to create a compelling image. It looks though that you succeeded, your images were beautiful.
Jason
Those would be images of a lifetime for me...So good!
The last location was in my opinion one of those you come back thousands of times and never get tired.
Mate, you're a legend. Putting some much needed inspiration back into my photography. Cheers to that beer too! No better way at all :) Liked and subscribed and a big thumbs up from here in Australia
Both final selects are outstanding! Thank you for continuing to inspire
Outstanding Thomas. You bring Namibia into our homes.
One of the world's iconic locations! It must be a fun place to shoot.
That last image is breath-taking, simplistic majesty! I don't want the Namibia series to end, the quality is next level man :)
What a superb backdrop stunning shots and place
Great photos Thomas! They're more colourful than I expected sanddunes to be, good work!
Nice to hear you struggle finding compositions too Tom, as a hobbyist its the bane of my life - think I need to follow that advice 'Find a subject and shoot it as the light changes'
A photo like a painting! Love it! Would've liked to see a panorama of that dune and the trees. Not sure if it would work in real life, but from what I gathered from the video.
That terrain is so surreal and awesome. Good job!
Simplicity at it's finest! Stunning!
That place is otherworldly... amazing photo, it almost looks like the white ground is glowing. I can easily imagine being on Mars... but for the trees. ;)
That shot of the tree and red sand is absolutely phenomenal!
thanks for sharing your experience and those spectacular images thomas ..the dune mono image is superb
Beautiful place. Thanks for taking us there with you
Yay! some colour photography to show the beautiful colours of Namibia!
"You tell me a better way doing photography!" Having the cold beer while having the camera on time laps? SCNR, getting my cold beer right now and enjoying your stunning and inspiring pictures.
Thanks, Thomas, a stunning video. What a location! I love your composition, but my goodness it seems like there were so many more. I agree with your philosophy, however, find a great composition and take images as the light changes. Wonderful. See you in seven weeks.
Your videos always inspire me to get out and push further into photography. Keep up the amazing stuff man.
That was absolutely beautiful. I love the minimalist photos as well.
Fantastic compositions as always Thomas! I enjoyed this video while torturing myself on the stair climber at the gym, so I felt like I was along for the hike! One tip when hiking in the dunes, I wear some gaiters that go over the top of my boots and pant legs to keep the sand out. Might be a good investment if you ever find yourself hiking in Sand Dunes in the future.
Fantastic image and another great vlog
Hi Thomas, I was super intimidated by my trip to White Sands National Monument in New Mexico last week, so it was reassuring to hear that this desert shoot was difficult for you too. Great job even with the elements!
Thomas, as I've gotten into landscape photography in the last couple years, I keep wanting to wider and wider with my focal lengths. Seeing the results you get with your trusty 70-200 (or even some longer shots) is inspiring me to try to find those wonderful compositions at long lengths like that. Thanks for the inspiration and ideas as always!
I am happy to see the level of energy you have getting higher with this trip. Keep it up!
Stunning! Thanks for the reminder to use all the lenses in my bag.
Breathtakingly beautiful.
When I think about your first vlogs, it is wonderfully stunning to see how far you've come, mate! The B & W images of the dunes are splendid. All the best for 2018!
This is place is so high up on my list. As you I'm so drawn to the minimalism and I love those dead trees on a red background. Would be awesome to also do some Milky Way photography there :)
Thats what I was thinking about the milky way but also doing a time lapse of it as well :)
It's worth a visit, but I didn't return to Deadvlei. I couldn't find anything unique that I hadn't seen many times before. The surrounding dunes however, they are amazing.
what is the personal security like in the country? in the areas you were visiting?

Thomas your images are amazing, and this one just took my breath away. I love the texture. Thank you for sharing!
Excellent, Thomas. Love those shots from the final location. Gorgeous.
Kinda doubt this'll make it to you, but I think you missed a killer composition at around 6:26. There's a tree looking thing by your tripod head with some sweet dunes behind it that I think would make an awesome photo.
Man good catch. That would make for one hell of a photo.
Thank you Thomas for a wonderful finish to Sunday afternoon. Beautiful images!
Namibia is on my bucket list for a long time! The skeleton coast with the abandoned and wrecked ships and the sand dunes with those trees...last but not least the non-existent light pollution makes this country such a treasure box.
Wonderful video, Thomas. And the location is almost beyond belief. I particularly liked your thoughts on taking the same image over and over, when it comes to being in an unfamiliar area, to really get an idea of how the light works as well as being able to choose the best of the bunch. Thanks for sharing.
Your work is just so breathtaking!
Love the video and gorgeous composition. Such inspiration 👍
Fantastic video Tom. Loved the images. The tree and the sand dune is BEAUTIFUL.
amazing what you did with that tree.. I’m a big fan of your work it’s keeps better and better every time.
It's photographs like that, that made me fall in love with your work!
Wow! You couldn't make a bad video if you tried! Always great to visit your channel for a little R&R! Truly, you make it seem as if I'm there with you! Well done!
Another brilliant video Thomas and absolutely stunning shots. Thank you for for sharing your passion for perfection.
After watching your videos I'm feeling great when i watch the sun rise in the morning. Everyday the sunrise is different.
Thomas - this was one of your best.
Fantastic images, love your works so much
I follow your channel because of your photography, but I have to tell you I'd likely follow even if it was about cross stitching or anything else I'm not interested in at all. Not only your individual video shots are pleasant to watch, but the feeling and pace of the whole movie is always incredibly enjoyable. I guess that's what happens when show other people how you do what you love.
Amazing place, Great Video & Shots Thomas.
Another great video, great use of the long lens, great pair of images.
Have I mentioned that this was great :)
Brilliant stuff thanks for sharing Thomas.
Such a beautifully serene landscape. I could just spend hours there!
Shot that place a few years ago absolutely fabulous place, with amazing sunsets.
I just love your video blogs about photography. After watching one of your videos I just want to get out there myself!
Looks so beautiful! great images!!
Who dislikes these videos, bloody excellent lent mate I've been binging, loving the tips.
Thank you for the mention Thomas! As always your videos and pictures are fantastic, thank you for inspiring me to make videos of my own!
You're more than welcome. Keep up the great work on your channel. When do you move to the UK?
It's still a but up in the air, but I'll be in touch when/if I do.
Stunning place and gorgeous photos. Thanks, Tom!
Absolutely stunning, love it sir. Thank so much,Thomas...,
A like is never enough! The image was stunning and so was the video ❤️
just beautiful.. the red sand looks amazing
What an amazing location, thanks for taking us with you.
Cracking image and what a dream place to shoot.
One of my favs. The landscape was exceptional. I thought for sure you'd choose one of the composites with the shadow crawling up the dune. Still love the photo you chose though.
I've recently start shooting a lot of landscape with my 70-200 f/4 (the IS, one). Amazing lense and, as you superbly show, a useful tool for creating composition in vast and empty environmnents
Inspiring video, Thomas. That final shot of the trees looks like it would make a beautiful print!
Cracking video as always - Love my long lens for landscape work as well as wildlife!
Tree in the Dunes is spectacular ! thanks for sharing.
Simply beautiful, stunning images.
Lovely images and beautiful location Tom. Another great vlog thanks for sharing
Thank you Thomas, you Inspire me so much.. I love your Videos and your pictures..
Keep up the great work and I hope one day to take some shots with you.
Best regards Ricky Brin
No kidding, that's gorgeous. It's funny, I dream of "the" shot, knowing I don't have the skills to capture it correctly (based on photos I've taken), but the chase seems completely worth it.
Love the tree and red dune, magical.
Beautiful images Thomas. Looks like a truly inspiring landscape. I would love to go. Nice work as usual!
Great photo in an amazing and inspiring location, what more could you... Well the cold beer of course.. I hope you made it to Kolmanskop or make it there... Namibia is on my list to do ASAP...
That Last image was "phenomenal" I really like the way you view a scene.
Loved that place another place for my bucket list
Great Vlog Thomas exceptional images !!
Absolutely stunning!....no, seriously, stunning!
