What is this based on? Looking at the views on videos of both, it seems like though some of the Hummer videos were relative flops, some are exceeding over half a million to nearly a million views which are considerably more than any of the Stubby videos. I'd imagine comment count is similar.
Damn, I forgot about that part!! I did that job on my sisters mini van... not hard, but what a mess! I guess they have an all aluminum one now in the aftermarket.. I doubt Mopar will change things on their side, I don't know if the Pentastar is going to be around much longer with the new hurricane engines.
The 3.6 sees a ton of use and abuse. Since Its the base motor in the Tradesman and Promaster Van, many wind up in fleet service. Beat on mercilessly by drivers who don't own them, subjected to heavy loads and stop and go driving by delivery services like Amazon and USPS. Service windows stretched by bean counting fleet managers, and fed low grade oil fuel, Often overloaded and idled for hours by workers trying to keep warm in construction and utility work , they somehow manage.
Andre thanks for putting stubby to work. Really enjoy seeing what the pentastar can do. I was really impressed on the skid pad that the abs would figure out which wheel needed traction.
Would like to see this route used on all the trucks you IKE. (including your recent purchase) Not everyone IKES. But a lot of people are on trips like this one. Slower speeds at harder climbs can be an issue on temps. vs freeway speeds.
It looks like zf and Chrysler did one thing very right in terms of slow speed towing and left the torque converter locked all the way down to 2nd gear in tow haul mode
I knew the power wasn't going to be great, but I am impressed at how well it maintained temps. I bet it would have completed the dirt section in 2wd just fine. I would like to see more videos on this route. Slow speed towing is hard on coolant, oil and trans temps
Its a Ram, of course it gets the views. People try to say online how bad a Ram is but these guys keep proving these people wrong. I can't wait for them to get hold of the Ram 1500 REV.
Been driving MOPARs since 1990 and never had one overheat on me, and never had one with a bad engine. Transmissions? Yes changed more of them than I'd like but otherwise every other part of them have been stellar. My 3 Dodge/Ram trucks I have towed up to and maybe slightly over the max and they always kept their cool and more than enough power including the one V6 Magnum truck I had.
Love the Jaws-type theme as Stubby swam up that hill. I pictured those bicyclists as unsuspecting seals, targeted by the ravenous and gaping chrome maw of the Great White Stubby. Great work guys!
I think Mopar engineers did this already with a mule. These are the commercials they should run on TV.Not catchy music and flashes of people using the truck .
Awesome video, I couldn’t believe how hard climbing pikes peak was on my truck and I wasn’t towing anything. Slow speeds and climbing mountains are hard on temps.
@@nrgzrbunny7775 This is total speculation, but I could see some dust or sand getting on it, and someone just wiping it with a dry cloth to get the dust off, and then the dust/sand scratches the dash as they wiped it.
WOW really impressed with the little truck that could. I watched the 1st test with the Chevrolet & it kelped overheating, so this showed me that if i was looking a "work" truck then stay away from Chevrolet.
As someone who as owned a couple of Jeeps, I have always thought Chrysler (stelantis) could do a much better job with gear mapping and when it should downshift. Especially if you are going uphill and have cruise control set. The other big thing I notice is, when you get off the gas and then go back to gas without touching the brakes, it is slow to respond to input of being back on the gas. My work around for both complaints is to put itnto sport mode, and it will downshift sooner so you don't loose as much speed going uphill, and throttle response is more like I would expect it to be. (no delay)
Ram does that to keeps the trans temps down also they have fuel efficiency and trans longevity to think about as well I think it's not bad at all for a stock tune but a trans tune would fix that hesitation
This tighter, twistier road reminds me of the first time my family drove from Texas to Ouray, CO with my dad towing a 16 foot utility trailer with 4 dual purpose motorcycles. This was in 1997 and my dad had his 1989 F-150 with the 5.0L and 4 speed AOD. That trailer couldn't have been much over 3000 lbs, but the old Ford struggled up over Red Mountain Pass on US550. There were times he couldn't make more than 10 mph. That little Pentastar is huffing and puffing, but it's getting it done!
This really reminds me 9f my 2003 land rover discovery hauling a uhaul on the Ike amd then up to Leadville. Even going over Vail Pass without a trailer it was hard to stay above 55.
I think one of the main flaws with this engine is the fact that it runs up to 230 degrees before thermostat opens. I have a v10 ford in my Rv and it stays steady at 195 degrees
I have a 3.6 ram 2019 single cab I abuse pretty hard flooring it because you can feel the power it’s a great truck. I have about 60,000 miles on it and have towed with it. it’s happy towing good on gas great truck. Stock exhaust sounds great on it too quiet when it needs to be but when you floor it sounds like a sports car and not in an obnoxious way. You can do donuts in it pretty easily too it’s just a fun truck all around
Nice work, yes nice view love that next time need to go up that road. Yes lot smoke we are getting it too down here in Louisiana thanks to Alberta Canada big forest fire.
I bet it wouldn't even sweat, I've hauled over 5k with a trailer. with a tool box/ bak rak & a 200lbs of tools in it. Also had 450lbs or so of weight between 2 occupants. I'd estimate i had a payload of close to 800lb W/o tongue weight..... + a 5k plus trailer..... barely could tell it was there. 0 struggle.
I think the refusal to downshift was a programming strategy to keep temperatures under control. It was a limp mode with no indication to the driver it was in a limp mode. Modern vehicles can anticipate when overheating is inevitable. Andre said he could hear the cooling fan running and around the same time he also stated it was floored, not downshifting and not going over 30. The computer recognized it was commanding maximum engine cooling and temperatures were still rising. So it reduced engine power and locked the trans in, I’m guessing 2nd gear, to cool down. Not sure about Chrysler but in Ford and GM it cuts off fuel and spark to half the cylinders to use those cylinders to pump the heat out the engine through the exhaust. It works and won’t take long to bring temperatures down. However you would get a engine temperature and reduced engine power message. My guess is Chrysler is doing the same thing but not displaying a message.
I believe the Ram v6 in this truck has none of that gimmicky crappy green sh!t on it. It is a straight up v6, a relic in todays market. Sergio would be proud. I am...
@@johnanderson60 what green…are you talking about? What I explained is the overheat fail safe mode GM and Ford use. Nothing green. Not everyone puts politics into everything.
@@khakiswag weren't the engine coolant, oil and transmission temperatures being monitored? Seemed like they stayed pretty constant, so what might the ECU be looking at if not those particular samples?
It looked like it was already in 1st gear, so nothing to downshift to. If you watch closely in that part of the video, you can seen the rpm climbed to around 5k around 30 mph, which would make sense for 1st gear with that axle ratio. Looking at the video they posted about picking up the Corvette, the acceleration video after leaving shows it hitting ~40 mph in 1st gear.
Stubby wins again! She climbed that mountain grade at high altitude with a rated load. This truck only has about 300 hp and 280 pound of torque. So she’s not a speed demon. We all saw she was not happy working hard under 3500 rpm. That’s to be expected. The pentastar v6 is off the bottom end of the torque curve. Once she gets past around 3500, she gets going. So he did good over all
I'm thinking it didn't downshift because there was nothing to downshift to. It was already in first gear. When it finally revved up to 5k rpm, it was around 30 mph, which would make sense for 1st gear getting to redline by around 40mph with that rear axle.
All he had to do is hit the down shift button to see what gear it was in. My 14 Hemi pulling 6,000 lbs in July 90 degree heat up long grades temps never go higher than 220 on oil and water. trans stays under 210.
People complain about midsize prices but at around $40k midsize trucks are typically more capable. For the same price, you could buy a midsize with 4-doors that's well equipped and better towing. Or you could buy a full size that's just a few years old. Tons of decently equipped 4-door Rams that're 2 or 3 years old with low mileage for under $40k.

Great video again! This towing test was a tough one. I am not sure what the grade was but I am sure it was steep. The switch backs prevent you from carrying much momentum through the curves. Good job Stubby! I am curious how Stubby would have done with you selecting the gears rather than floor the accelerator and let the truck select a gear. I believe that this engine produces peak torque around 2,800 rpm. Would it be better for the truck to drive at a slower speed and select gears keeping the rpm between 2,800 and say 3,500 rpm? Just curious?

Why do you need 4wd for a very well maintained gravel road, and why do you sound like you're panicking. Just drive the damn truck if it breaks let us know if it doesn't let us know. Nothing about this video is scary except for the music you're playing
For a well maintained dirt road you don’t need 4wd. Also it cuts power from the rear, would be different if you weren’t towing and didn’t need the full power there. Under load though I’m surprised if passed where that Silverado failed, I’m impressed.
This trail is probably the most important test on the channel. But if the truck goes into overdrive while you're flooring it, you need to know when to manually downshift to save the engine and transmission. Trying to go uphill in overdrive at 2000rpm is a truck killer.
Wow that 3.6 is just gutless down low and that is one of my biggest issues with the 3.6 Pentastar. This engine is so gutless till about 4k then it finally wakes up.
Yes the graph is correct. You ever drive one? It's never going to be near 1800 when working. I was clumsily referring to the tranny trying to keep the usable torque at 4000 thru 5500 but , past 5200 the torque drops off and hp goes up thru 6500ish.
@@michaelatkins9780 I've driven a couple and they aren't much slower than my ram hemi and they feel a lot lighter with the front end the cars I've driven with the pentastar were actually quick as well but yes at 4500 does feel a bit sluggish but this video it's not the high revs it's the torque converter locking and it's not switching gears at low rpms which is for keeping trans temps stable
I can see that if the sun is out as the small cab means you're a bit more directly exposed to the radiation. I'd personally probably not have AC on but have the fans a bit higher, however given they are filming they probably dont want background fan noise (or as mentioned with the wildfires, keep recirc on with AC to avoid smoke coming in).
I'm quite frankly amazed Dodge made a vehicle that doesn't die under light loads, let alone heavy / over-loads. I guess the rest test will be if it's in constant CEL mode after warranty runs out.
Wow i feel better about my ram pulling my boat. Its a similar truck. Quad cap with no chrome package. Other than that they are the same. Only i got mine for 6k less than you did 🤔🤔🤔
I'm just happy to see work truck testing. I know you make your channel $$$ on the luxury trucks but those are just modern El camino cars with open bed. Better to manually control vehicle, then just floor it when it will not downshift appropriately. Need to keep the engine in the higher torque area. Plus this was only 5k? This is easy mid-size truck or suv zone.
I think TFL got more views and reviews and interest with the Stubby Ram than with the disaster that was the electric Hummer
Haha, and they spent 1/3 of the price for stubby Ram.

Sounds like a ralley race. ...speedo says 7 mph... 🤣.
The Pentastar got it done though. Considering the tall gearing it's actually kind of impressive!
Yeah, always see the top dog engines but never the small little base work trucks 🤙🏽
Some poor sap is going to buy this truck one day. Lets hope they don't wach the show. 😂
Hmm, low on torque below 3,500 RPM, but at least the temperatures stayed reasonable.
At 68 degrees and you’re using A/C you must be really hot blooded.
Andrew said downshift manually that would be funny with the knob.
Wait, you can tow a higher capacity trailer on a lower tow rated truck legally?
I think technically local laws just stipulates a load being unsafe or a hazard which can endanger ones life.
The truck is curious?
and yet everyone always gives crap to the Pentastar 3.6L but yet people put them to the test to fail them and they always get the job done
Later,.. Hi Honey, I'm home, phew, what a day at work today! 😄
25 mph?
I knew I should've watched paint dry.
Never send in a V6 to do a V8's job.
I do all the time you don't always need a gas guzzling V8 😮
@@tomstarcevich1147 then your V6 is going to get smoked quickly
3.6 is a great engine, very capable. 305 horsepower
Now do this when it’s 90F +
More of reason for a turbo at high elevation
My gawd, such drama....
and for what! :)
I'm quite frankly amazed Dodge made a vehicle that doesn't die under light loads, let alone heavy / over-loads. I guess the rest test will be if it's in constant CEL mode after warranty runs out.
Who is the jerk that scratched up the gauges? That would drive me nuts!!!
No mS. tRuCk. Thank god
Wow i feel better about my ram pulling my boat. Its a similar truck. Quad cap with no chrome package. Other than that they are the same. Only i got mine for 6k less than you did 🤔🤔🤔
What trial were you driving up? That’s gorgeous
My 4.7 blew up towing my trailer, new engine, still cheaper than a new truck
I'm just happy to see work truck testing. I know you make your channel $$$ on the luxury trucks but those are just modern El camino cars with open bed.
Better to manually control vehicle, then just floor it when it will not downshift appropriately. Need to keep the engine in the higher torque area. Plus this was only 5k? This is easy mid-size truck or suv zone.
Heavy truck with a small engine and no torque
