Thankfully I haven’t had major refunding issues through eBay. As a seller I absolutely hate the thought of someone being dissatisfied with a purchase that I going above and beyond trying to make it right. And as a buyer I would 100% send that money right back. You’ll definitely go further in life by doing the right thing.
You did everything wrong. Once there is an eBay case opened, you don't need to do anything. Do not engage further with the buyer, and let ebay handle it.
Yeah dont ever stop making scam callout videos please. Theyre FANTASTIC learning experiences for any selling standpoint, and it helps to know who not to sell to in the future as well!
Agreed, only ship international on ebay using global shipping program. Once it arrives at us hub ebay takes over and is responsible for ensuring delivery.
Great content, Bry - really useful and educative regarding how to go about issuing refunds when using ebay. My two main takeaways are that everyone needs to use the Burrito Model when describing profit and loss, and that you're bringing your boy up with a superb moral compass! Integrity is indeed everything, and it means that those with whom you deal will always be able to trust you.
I feel for you for what happened. This is such a great video. Thank you Bry. Appreciate also that you always treated the scammer with respect and gave them the opportunity to do the right thing. It would not be worth it to me to go through all the steps and time and effort that you did - but when you have a community of thousands that will learn from it... very much worth it. Thanks again. And let us know cert number or if there's a way we can actively avoid buying products know to be involved in scams. Best wishes.
I learn a lot from experienced sellers like you. As a novice ebay seller, I’ve already learned not to conduct business or communicate outside of the original platform that I am selling. I don’t have a separate website so it’s easier to avoid such mistakes. In the short time that I have been selling on eBay, I’ve already received communications: first to communicate directly outside of eBay and then to buy items using methods outside of eBay like Venmo using the excuses like, “to avoid taxes”.
"A day in the life of Brys Comics"... Thanks for sharing. These Goblins will take ur cake and eat it too!!! Keep us posted. Thanks Bry for all you do for the comic community.
I’ve used eBay for over 20 years. I’ve only had about 5 really bad experiences, most with statues and 3 of them have been recent. eBay always sides with the buyer but with that said there’s a lot of good buyers and sellers out there.
It's not even necessarily the money. It feels scummy dealing with someone like that. I've had sellers send me stuff and then claim its not what they sent when I take closeup pictures of the item(s) 😢
You actually undercharged me on a trade but I made sure you got the agreed upon amount. I try to always do the right thing because i hope for the same in return.
I had a similar situation happen to me with a buyer in Italy saying he never received the book. I don’t what it was, but when I sent it out, my gut said to spend the extra few bucks and get the insurance so I did. Fast forward a few weeks and supposedly the package was “lost.” eBay gave the seller the refund but got my money back through the insurance. The universe was on my side on that one.
Sorry man. What a mess. There are still decent people out there. Been watching your videos. Really enjoyable and informative. When I get some extra cash, I'm going to get some books from you. You seem very fair and a good business man. Big Flash fan. Have a wonderful day.👍🙂
Love your videos Bry! Sorry you went through all that. I also figured out how to do "whatnot" (for your sales) on my laptop, since I only have a flip phone! LOL I have a question about a "deal" you have in your shop. I know you always sell for great prices for your customers, and every book that I looked up is below the last sale price on GPA, which is awesome! Can you double check your price on ASM 73 please? I am new to looking up prices, and I may be doing it wrong; Thank you for your time! 🤗
I had a similar issue but I blame the post office. They never updated the tracking that they received the package even though I hand delivered it to the post office.
I once shipped something to Austria. The idiotic USPS sent it to Australia (for those unaware, these are VERY different countries, lol). Buyer was cool about it and very patient. Miraculously, they eventually got the package!
As a long time seller of vinyl records on eBay, you definitely made some mistakes but the good news is you learned something along the way. I ship a lot of classical records to China, it's a headache almost every time. There's also still hope you get the eBay 2nd refund back. You need to demand to talk to someone, and when you do finally hear a human voice on the phone, explain what happened and then immediately ask to talk to their supervisor. They (the higher-ups) have the power to make you whole, you just gotta actually speak to the right person. $300 is $300, it's worth the effort for the call.
Your first mistake was selling internationally. I’ve been doing eBay for 20+ years and I’ve never had more problems than when I’ve shipped things overseas. I no longer ship overseas no more international transactions. You’re just hung out to dry and have no recourse.
Hello Bryan. I sell on Ebay as well. I have encountered similar situations. I do not understand. The item clearly showed tracking/shipping status. There was no need to send him a refund outside of the Ebay system. Correct me if I am wrong. If you had immediately contacted Ebay, they would have seen the shipping progress, and issued the buyer a refund at no cost to you. Am I wrong? I went through two almost identical situations. One with a chinese customer, one with a buyer fron Mexico. Both times, Ebay saw shipping progress/proof, and they said they would take care of the refund from their end. Both times, they told me that Ebay will issue the refund. No cost to me the seller. The shipping tracking progress was in essence the seller insurance. The book eventually arrived to the Chinese customer, but never arrived to the Mexico destination. I was still issued my funds for both sales by Ebay. Ebay refunded both buyers.
This happened to me with a Mega Bloks set. The tracking continued to show it was in transit and EBay failed me. At that moment, I learned never to ship globally unless it is through the Global Shipping Program.
That sucks. I've only had one bad experience selling on eBay, but that one was all it took to traumatize me. 😅 Have sold a bit on there since but nowhere near what I would have done if not for that. And every time I do, I'm terrified what's going to happen until it is weeks after they receive the item.
Great video Bry! Great story, I always worry about sending oversees but so far I had good luck. I did block that buyer. Whenever in NY, I'll treat you to a burrito.
Damn bro that's unreal. One of the reasons I don't like buying raw comics runs the risk but there ways detect it. Buy grade 9.8 spawn comics cost alot more but at least you know what you get.

I’m in the shipping business, and I highly suggest to never rely on USPS for any international shipping. Tracking outside of the States is a gamble not worth taking.
FYI "Ebay International Shipping Program" is the one with protections. "Ebay International Standard" Has no protections. I thought they were one and the same for years.
Thanks for the informative story. I found it interesting that code blue at the bookstore is a theft. Code blue in my job is when a patient’s heart has stopped.
He actually said, "You're speaking in a foreign language if you're trying to get a dollar out of me." 😄 If your son thinks retail theft is bad, just tell him to wait until he meets a politician or has to pay taxes. Maybe that free slab and cash was his good karma for living under an authoritarian regime.😄. Seriously, I'm glad you were able to recoup some of your losses.
I haven't sold anything on eBay in a very long time but even in the early days I had to stop shipping internationally because of scams like this. It can happen locally but you have some better tracking and law enforcement options if there are shenanigans afoot. In all likelihood the guy received the book but didn't want to pay for it and then got pushy to see if he could get a bonus. I had someone try a scam like this in another state. I had them deal with the USPS since I proactively paid for the insurance on the item when they opted out of it. They came across just as pushy and demanding same as the guy in your messages until I told them to make a claim with USPS. This was the early days of eBay and I know they've changed a lot of their policies in regard to complaints and refunds.
I stopped shipping to China many years ago. Percentage of problem transactions are far greater than other countries. There are many countries that are also problematic that I don't ship to.
Ebay support sucks if they're telling you to try getting a buyer's email address to pay you offsite. They really should have handled that on their site. Sorry you had to go through that!
Once an item is in the possession of the carrier my obligation is over. I cannot control anything once it leaves my hands and I won't be liable for what happens next. If there's tracking then the carrier has it. If it was shipped to the address they provided then that's on them whether it's delivered incorrectly or pinched at their door. I insure everything and if it's damaged in shipping I tell them how to file a claim. I will go out of my way to be helpful but I'm not refunding anyone unless the problem is a direct result of what I did or failed to do. Refunding to "make things right" is admirable but 99% of the time it's always a scam. I would have recommended that you simply apologize for the delay but it's out of your control and then encourage them to open a case (which it seems they did). After that, leave it to eBay to resolve. In this scenario eBay would probably told the buyer to wait and cleared you from responsibility and then would have managed it from there. Sometimes eBay can be helpful. But, yes, ignore the urge to jump out and make things right. That will generally be a bad turnout for you no matter what the situation. Sorry you dealt with this. Welcome to my world.
This is all very odd. I recently had an international buyer make an eBay purchase. The book Was held up in shipping for unduly long; however, the process of working with buyer went down a completely different direction. Because eBay manages the international shipping I was off the hook. If the book never arrived that was on eBay. The buyer opened a case. I spoke with eBay and we waited. Eventually, the book was delivered. I guess the moral of the story is when using eBay, ship through eBay?
ebay provides no support for sellers. I just got through getting screwed by a customer. They returned my item saying it was used when it was brand new out the box. When i got my item back the box was crush because it was poorly package by the customer. Customer has ghosted me and the customer.
Just tried to find him on ebay out of curiosity and it looks like he may have nuked that account knowing you were gonna put him on blast. I'd keep that address handy and make sure you never send anything to that address ever again. You are a brave man shipping to China. I dont even like buying anything from China on ebay. I only buy on ebay now and try to keep purchases inside the U.S when possible.
Damn, dude. Now I am craving a burrito... one thing to consider is that the buyer thought you were trying to scam him, because overpayment and refund scams are among the most common online scams. Especially considering that this was the first time he was buying from you and he didn't actually receive his purchase. I only sold comics during the height or 2021/2022. I did no international. Since then, I don't sell anymore. I don't want to run into the issues others face.
Bry I am sure he will send you the book back. lol!! Long story short, too late. Seems like a pain in butt. In my job I had to deal with fraud at Wells Fargo and they budget 25 million a year for loss due to fraud. Crazy!!!!

thank you for this information.
I was about to say that, why wouldn't he be using GSP? It's increasingly good, been using it since day one.
Yeah it's in account settings>shipping preferences. You can exclude individual countries or entire regions.

You are FAR too trusting Bry! This had all the signs of a scam. Ebay tried to protect you by keeping you from issuing a refund.
Rule #1 on eBay. Don’t ever respond to offers with messages that isn’t in proper English. It’s almost always a problem
Yeah the use of "friend" is a flag. Oddly enough.
Bro the language in the messages was all wrong lol GIANT red flag.
"aren't" in proper English.
@ thanks
I only use eBay Global Shipping now for international.
The ONLY way to go
100% my policy as well. It has saved my butt several times.
Same here. It really is a good safety net for sellers.
Agreed, only ship international on ebay using global shipping program. Once it arrives at us hub ebay takes over and is responsible for ensuring delivery.
In my experience buying, the Global shipping program charges premium prices then sub contracts to the cheapest delivery companies.

Someone did something similar to me. I sold an X-men 266 for $175 and 88 days later opened a case and sent back a horrible copy of the same book.
Yuck
Another reason grading comics is a good idea. They wouldn’t be able to do that with the cert # on the slab.
Appreciate you sharing your mistakes. I often hope that people will do the right thing. It doesn't always turn out that way.

Sometimes it’s such a pain to sell and buy on eBay. I might be getting scammed off a purchase even as we speak. We’ll see.

Someone should make a commandment for that kind of thing!
Ebay support sucks if they're telling you to try getting a buyer's email address to pay you offsite. They really should have handled that on their site. Sorry you had to go through that!
He'll probably get the book and msg you that the slab's cracked.
Sorry about that. That always sucks when someone reveals that they’re shitty. I’m glad you at least got 80 burritos 🌯
Burritos are more in the Seattle area. About 13 plus tax.
Love the Burrito medium of exchange.

Reason why I don’t ship international.
eBay has never felt comfortable to me.
He will definitely, still receive the book.
This would make me not do any transactions on eBay. EBay isn't being transparent on their side.
That’s why you don’t refund until you have to
