- Hi, I'm Tom Ayling and I'm an antiquarian bookseller. Having been compared to Joe Goldberg more times than I care to mention, I thought it was time to examine just how much he knows about rare books, and look at some of the first editions that appear in You on Netflix.

Never trust a man who says he has “rare” books in his basement! 🤣 Loved you’re first foray into long format content Tom!! 👏 Can’t wait for more!
Thanks! I’ve gone book hunting in attics before, but thankfully not many basements 😂
Yeah, I keep my rare books in my den. Haha
One would think with budgetary resources this show has, they would have hired a rare/antiquarian book dealer as a consultant, if nothing else for the look of the books.
Mock-ups would be preferable, I think.
Absolutely. A lot of films and tv get these details wrong. A notable exception would be the recent Little Women film, which went to great pains to replicate both the book, and the printing and binding processes of the time
@@tomwayling I didn't know that, Tom! I love that film! Perhaps you could do a video on that? (It's Elise btw)
@@tomwayling they utterly messed up the wardrobe of everyone though. You win some you lose some. 😅
I just realized bc of the cover you showed in this video, that the Oz books I have are all actually first editions! I have only 4 out of the series. They were my grandmother's, the covers are not in great condition but the pages are all good and one says quite clearly copyright 1908 L Frank Baum....that's so cool!
Holy shit that’s cool,I don’t have any first additions of any books, but I do own a second edition of the first Harry Potter book,I would kill to have something even close to that
He said all the first editions have that cover...he did not say every book with that cover is a first edition.
This is a wonderful format, I really enjoyed it and would love to see more!
Thanks so much! More coming 🫡
@@tomwayling Excellent! Can't wait 😊
Having been in a real library of rare books, the owner allowed his guests to touch all the books, and assured us all the books were insured. The point was not to hide things away, it was to give access to people that would never have a chance to get so close to such rare history. One of the best evenings of my life.
Really enjoyed this longer video, Tom! Even though you already pack quite a lot of info into your TT videos, it's great to go more into things! (It's Elise btw)
Thanks Elise! Really appreciate it ☺️
Tom this is a fascinating channel. I truly enjoy each video. Thank you so much for sharing your passion and knowledge.
I truly have no idea how your video came recommended to me. I think you do a great job! Maybe try experimenting with bokeh/aperture for filming yourself and work to increase the playback quality of the videos. Subscribed and liked.
Thanks so much! A first crack at this type of video so the quality will improve! 👍
Ahh! It’s so refreshing to find a book enthusiast! Thanks for these videos 😇
Tom, I really enjoyed this longform video. I love these industry expert reacts to a tv series/movie videos so this was very fun!
Thanks Simon! There’s definitely some other rare books in film / tv I can react to!
I appreciate the professionalism in your video. Keep it up!
Thank you. This is such an interesting video. It's great that you are sharing your expertise.
This was so, so great!!
this was so cool! love your insight
Had to stop the video once you said "let's skip to season 4" I will have to continue to watch this video next week. Ha
This is fascinating what brilliant knowledge!
While generally cellars or basements are cold and damp those books are obviously stored in a climate controlled room.
Luv the content I just subscribed
Massive fan. Kevin
Thank you Kevin! 🙌
He has a youtube channel?!
Love your videos but the sound volume could be improved.
If you’re doing videos about fictional booksellers, would you consider one about The Ninth Gate? It’s not only about a fictional bookseller, but also a fictional book, supposedly co authored by the devil himself.
Great movie!
I don't like this Joe character at all.
Don’t be like Joe.
Idk how you would work for a video but do that one movie the ninth gate
He has a youtube channel?!
