    My idol is Alekhine.20 years ago I saw his games and I really impressed.Tal and Alekhine are two fiercely attacking player but I chose Alekhine the most because he is also one of the best endgame player compare to Tal in which endgame is not his forte.

    An instructive display of knights vs. bishops. And as in real life, the B's have the advantage in the cloisters and palaces where conspiracy and connivance rule. Here the N's move freely from tight to open quarters...a really good game.

  • @ZacLinton

    In Black's position at 4:20, I would have traded the bishop on g4 for the knight on f3. This forces a retake with the pawn. Then push forward in the center with e5. This is a much stronger position for Black and potentially winning.
    There was no reason to get panicky and retreat with the King so quickly. There is no immediate threat on the King's side for at least another couple of moves due to the rooks not being doubled. The knight on a4 isn't going anywhere anytime soon either. b6 is double defended...

    The bishop pair is only effective if both bishops are able to play a major role in the position, and even then it is possible that the opposing player may have resources; he may be able to take advantage of a weak pawn structure with his knights, for example. In this game, Alekhine shut down Black's dark square bishop, so the bishop pair didn't really matter. Unfortunately, at 3:32, while I don't like the idea of trading queens (which is what Black chose to do), there is a complication after the alternative 1...Bb8. Alekhine might actually be able to play 2.Nb6+, forcing 2...cxb6 3.cxb6 and Black has things to worry about. White threatens to pin the queen to the king and the black king remains vulnerable after Black answers the threat of the royal pin.

    Bishops, Knights and Rooks each can be better than the other depending on the position. Same with pawns and Queens really.

    bishop pair is stronger only in an open position. After 23 Kd7 black position was totaly cramped. I think also that not killing knight on c3 only helped alekhine to start more quickly the pawn storm

  • @Chujutsu

    I think why the bishop pair didn't work for Kristofil in this case was White's pawn chain in the center blocking Black's dark-squared bishop from doing much

    • @Watermelon_Man92
      @Watermelon_Man92 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Knights have various roles. Players like myself like to use them as tactical grenades to blow up the position at any moment, but they also serve as excellent defensive pieces. When castling king side, the knight on f6 is often very important. It has a lot of implications as far as the defense of the king is concerned. So with knights you have options but it is probably best under most circumstances to use one of them to defend you king. As for your other knight, do whatever you want with it. Be selective about putting knights on the rim of the board. They are often (though not always) weak here. As a matter of fact, there is even a saying "a knight on the rim is dim". One other thing, knights tend to function in closed space more easily than bishops. In any case, I would say it depends on states, but take caution to not overlook the tactical implications of knights. A knight in the right place at the right time can do unthinkably amazing things.

      open up spaces for your knight to fork and support out post with pawns unable to attack your pieces base pawn holding its position dominantly putting pieces behind knights is also good because of a knights mobility in front of major pieces

      If the position is open then bishops would be better. Closed positions favor knights.

      It's been a consensus of 100s of years of chess research by masters that the bishop pair is superior to the knight pair. Technically, the person with the advantage is the person controlling more squares. Bishops are capable of controlling squares in MOST positions.
