How to find Penny Items at Dollar General in 2023

- In this video I show you all the places I checked in Dollar General to find 336 Penny items. I give suggestions on where you are likely to find penny items at Dollar General and talk about how to find the most penny items whenever Dollar General puts out a new penny list.

after looking in several stores for over 10 years, I have yet to find one item that possibly could be a penny, alone 90% items. With this video, I now am hopeful of finding at least one penny item. Thank you for detailing how to search and where to search.

Day I’m new to this bc nj had horrible $ stores and I just moved to Florida they r wonderful here ..I’m just so confused so penny items are old season things..but she is the penny sale I know it was the other day but only once a season?? Sorry I’m sure it sounds stupid ..so glad I found this channel
I'm going to make a video soon that explains everything about penny shopping to try to help people just starting out. Penny shopping can be confusing and difficult but it can also be a lot of fun.
I’m still a bit confused r they the products with yellow tags what about home decore or makeup and stuff like that I want to go on thanksgiving bc I’m going to be alone so I figured I’d shop also when is the penny sale over and when does it happen thank u so much
Different stuff goes to a penny usually every Tuesday. If something goes to a penny it will usually stay that way for months but sometimes the dollar general system will reset an item in a day so you never really know if it will stay a penny for long. It's always a good idea to use the dollar general app to scan items to make sure they are still a penny. If they are a penny the price will say $0.00 when you scan it.
How do you know what is a penny item? They have prices pasted on them, so I assume I’m missing something. ?

So do these penny items automatically ring up a penny at the register or is there more to it than that?
If you scan the items with the Dollar General app on your phone then you can check to see if they are ringing up a penny in your location. If they say $0.01 or $0.00 on the app then they will ring up a penny at the register.

Will I be able to get these items on any day for a penny?
They start being a penny on Tuesday and then they usually stay ringing up a penny for at least a few weeks before they reset to full price in the Dollar General system. You can get the items any day after they've hit a penny but they will get harder and harder to find. It is best to use the dollar general app and scan the items to make sure they are a penny. They will ring up $0.00 in the app of they cost a penny.

is there a way to know if it's a penny BEFORE we get to the register?
Yes, put the dollar general app on your phone. When you get to a store make sure your app is set to the right location and then use the barcode scanner to check prices. If it rings up $0.00 then it's a penny item.

The Dollar General app has a price scanner. You have to make sure it's set to the right location and then it really helps to be able to look at prices!

I went this morning on Wednesday morning unfortunately I did not find anything in my store. Still had the fall Decour at only 50% off full price. I’m glad a lot of people scored. It’s all timing.

You definitely have to luck out and have good timing to get the penny items. I went to 10 different stores on Tuesday and one store I only found 1 item and 1 store I found 200. Sometimes you get lucky.

So the yellow dot is the penny? And the red is Clarence?
Right now the yellow dot accessories and green dot home goods, and Halloween stuff is a penny. They change what dots are on sale a lot, it can be very confusing!

To check if the item is a penny in your store you need to scan it in the Dollar General app to see if it rings up $0.01 or $0.00. If it rings up like that in the app then it will ring up a penny at the register.

The DG in my area will not let you buy penny items. When it rings up they say they aren't allowed to sell it and void it. I wish we had self checkout. I find them all the time.
It's frustrating when employees make up their own set of rules. I'm sorry that sounds awful!
So is it better to do self check out when doing this or let the employees check you out ?
I like to go through the self checkout when I just have a few things. Some employees are nice and don't mind when you go through the register but sometimes they end up being not so nice . It really just depends on what store and how the employees act on rather I choose the self checkout or cashier.
So what do y’all do when they won’t sale the penny items to u ?
Sometimes I just let it go but if the cashier is rude and makes a scene I have filled out surveys and had district managers call me so I can share what happened.

Daughter had found penny items completely by accident when shopping at our local store and they refused to sell it to her after it scanned....
They aren't supposed to do that but some employees get angry and make up their own rules. I'm sorry you experienced the negative side of penny shopping. I've had a cashier take my stuff and throw it in the trash before. 🤦♀️

What tells you the item is a penny? Is there a marking on the item?
Almost every Tuesday different items go down to a penny. To find out what the latest penny items are you can watch youtube videos and join Facebook groups. Right now the yellow dot accessories, green dot Homegoods, and Halloween stuff is a penny. There are always random things that are penny items too so you have to scan them in your app to check.
The store near me won’t sell them. I went to the register and was told “we aren’t supposed to sell these” and put them behind the counter.
They aren't supposed to do that, if your store has a self checkout you might want to try that. I have filled out negative reviews for stores that refuse to sell items before and had the district manager call and talk to me. You can try that but theres still no guarantee they will change their behaviors. It's frustrating when employees don't follow their own stores policy.

Because its a penny are u buying STUFF UREALLY DONT NEED AND ARE spending money can be used to buy food or meds or pay bills
My newer store never has any. Halloween wasn't even marked down

Hi, I still don’t understand what the tag looks like for Penny items., and how does the cashier know it’s Penny item. Last year I asked a cashier if she knew where the Penny items were, she said, I’ve never heard of it.
The tags of what is a penny can change often. Right now the 2023 yellow dot accessories are a penny but there are new yellow dots out that are 2024 and they are full price. Penny shopping can be very confusing. You have to watch weekly videos and/ or look through a lot of Facebook groups to start memorizing what is currently a penny so you can search for it in your store.
Sometimes the cashier doesn't know it's a penny until they scan it on the register. You're never supposed to ask the employees about penny items though because they are supposed to pull the items from the shelf and you are actually just getting lucky if you find anything they missed.

What is a Penny Item???
Penny items are things that Dollar General is getting rid of so employees are supposed to pull them off the shelf, if the employees miss the items they will ring up a penny.

I've been to 2 dollar generals and will not go back they were so dirty and unorganized I felt dirty when I left had to go home and shower really gross only saw expired and broken items
Unfortunately there are a lot of dollar generals like that. I've been to several where I decided that town was not worth returning too. 😬
I reported one Dollar General to the head office and they were nice and said they would check into it and about a week and half later the store was cleaned up you can try that if you want to return to that store

The employees are keeping them for themselves along with the dumpsters full of merchandise. Their stores are so nasty in our town now just like Walmart.
Sadly there are a lot of stores with dumpsters full and the stores themselves look like dumpsters on the inside too. 😅
