    I used to avoid silicones with my natural virgin hair however I bleached my entire head of hair and I definitely prefer conditioners with silicones now. They don’t weigh my hair down anymore. My entire hair care has changed.

    I have used nearly all remedies, but what did better for my hair fall control was these things. 1 glass slightly hot water to drink as first thing when you wake up. Using hair comb of neem wood. Using micro fiber towel on head wash day. Some light exercises. Using Littleexttraa Coconioon anti-hair fall set once or 2 times a week.

    I have naturally curly hair so I do find that having too many silicones in my routine does create a bit of build up and weighs my hair down a bit. However, I find a little bit of silicones (eg. in a serum or styling oil) is totally fine for my hair and adds shine and softness. Also, of course I always use a heat protectant when straightening my hair and these have silicones, which is great. All about knowing what the ingredients actually do, how your hair responds to them, and what quantities to use.

      Keeping the hair wet for long periods of time damages the medulla, which is the core of your hair stand. Blow drying can damage the cuticle, which is the outer part of your hair, but if the heat from the dryer is comfortable on your scalp and skin, then it won't damage the cuticle either. Warm to dry, cool to set your style.

      I invested in a microfiber towel and Odele’s Air drying gel thing, which is also a leave in conditioner. Those two together have really helped with my hair drying quicker! I have fine thick (af) wavy hair and it maybe takes like a full hour to dry mostly versus the several hours before!

    I've had totally virgin hair and totally blonde hair and everything in between, honestly my hair always ranged from low porosity to normal. People just assume when your blonde your hair is high porosity when in reality it's your hair type, your hair health. If your lower in your porosity (as a whole) then when you become blonde you may just become more "average porosity".
    I'm a stylist btw and I've noticed hair shedding most often for girls I know can have to do with products. Many girls have tried to go the while none sulfate route or more washing, less washing, treatments etc and sometimes some products and regimes just DONT work for everyone. I've noticed more hair shedding with non sulfates often, Co washing too frequently ect. So many people overwash and this is a huge problem.
    Yes you said it right, I have seen so many girls ruin their hair with coconut oil. Please don't do it. Coconut oil actually has astringent properties this is why you use it to treat fungus on the skin as well many of out non sulfates derive from coconut. Coconut as a small ingredient is one thing but yes you can hurt your hair with strait Coconut oil in frequent use.
    And proteins cfeat massive films on the hair as well but no one demonized proteins. If you use protein heavy products every wash and style, just give it a couple months and see how crappy your hair feels. Protein build up can lead to straw hair and ultimately its coating the hair like a silicone but proteins are water soluble so their easier to wash away. Anyways enjoyed the video had to share my thoughts.

    Yes, Part 2! This is fascinating to me...did not know air drying could be worse than blow drying but makes sense that water being in the hair too long could be not good. I have curly hair so I may try blow drying with a diffuser on cool instead! Very informative, I'm nodding my head at all of this good knowledge you're sharing with us. I also still use silicones even though curly because my hair just looks better with them in some of my products. Thanks Abbey, great job!

      You can diffuse on warm as long as it's comfortable to your scalp and skin, it won't damage your hair. Also silicones are awesome to protect hair and do not block out moisture and do not build up indefinitely on your hair. Even dimethicone will only build up for 5 washes, then it can't build up anymore, as there's nowhere else for it to build up on. If it's weighing your hair down, just wash it. Some ingredients in sulfate free shampoos are enough to get it off.

    I put this in a lot of the individual replies below, but I'll put it here, too. As for the study on air drying vs air drying, air drying is worse bc you're leaving the hair wet for long periods of time which can damage the medulla, which is the core of the hair stand. Blow drying can damage the cuticle, which is the outer part of the strand, but as long as the heat is comfortable on your skin and scalp, it won't damage the cuticle either. Warm to dry, cool to set your style. As for silicones, there're good for hair. The main problem is weigh down. Mainly dimethicone, which is the strongest silicone gets vilified a lot, but even it won't build up on your hair indefinitely. After 5 washes it will no longer build up on top of itself bc there's no more surface area on the stands for it to build up on. If it is weighing your hair down, all you need to do is wash. There are ingredients in sulfate free shampoos that are strong enough to remove even dimethicone. So, if you like them and want to use them, do it! As Abbey said, they're great protectors for the hair shaft. No reason to avoid them, unless you don't like how they feel on your hair. Oh, and as for any silicones blocking moisture out of the hair, your hair still gets wet with silicone on it, right? So, they don't really block anything out like ppl think. I often put oil in my hair after using a conditioner with dimethicone, and throughout the day, guess what happens? It gets absorbed! Amazing, right!!! Hope this helps!

    • @orlafalconer2314
      @orlafalconer2314 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wishhhhh I’d known this sooner, I saw so many people on TikTok saying silicones were awful for your hair so I avoided them like the plague, saw this video a few days ago and got a conditioner with silicones and my hair has been so so soooo much smoother and softer, Abbey is an angel

    • @YourMajesty143
      @YourMajesty143 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oil is an occlusive just like dimethicone, so it makes sense to stack an occlusive on top of another occlusive. Oils condition, they don't necessarily hydrate/moisturize, so for low-porosity hair types that already struggle with getting moisture into their cuticles, silicones make it that much harder. They're called an occlusive for a reason. Sure they're not a concrete barrier, so yes some things CAN pass through, but there's still a net that certainly keeps things out.
      Lo-po hair types also collect buildup much more easily than other hair types, so if I am gonna choose an occlusive, I'll typically rely on emollients, serums, oils, or even an SPF - all of which seal the cuticle, albeit with more nutrients/protection. Lo-po hair doesn't get wet as easily, water just beads up on top, so the hair needs to be drenched for moisture to penetrate or it needs to be delivered as water vapor (smaller molecules form) via steam.
      So the claim that hair still gets wet with silicone only applies to people with higher porosity. But I agree that silicone is not the "big bad" that the natural hair community makes it out to be (well, other than its environmental impact), but I don't think it's a useful ingredient for those of us that have to work harder to maintain moisture in between washes. However, that shouldn't stop others from using it if they find it helpful.

      If you can hold your hand (or scalp) in the heat of the airflow coming from your blow dryer comfortably, meaning it doesn't burn, then it's totally safe for your hair. Warm air first, then cool to set your style. And silicones are good for the hair. They just weigh some people's hair down, so you may or may not like them. And silicones do not build up indefinitely. After 5 washes with them, they won't build up on top of each other anymore. And they do not block moisture out of the hair...if they did, your hair wouldn't get wet!

    Hi Abbey I have a question regarding pureology strength cure condition (which I use) or olaplex no 8 (which I have just purchased). I too only wash my hair once a week and I believe if you use olaplex no 8 it replaces the conditioner. Which product do you prefer? Thanks Erin xx. How does silicone affect your hair? I assume my hair type is similar to yours - thin, almost straight, looks prone to be oily if you’ve got an oily scalp. Ive always avoided all these ingredients you mentioned... hehe (silicones, sulfates, alcohols) im looking into starting back on silicones and sulfates again as i want protection for my thin, weak hair and deep cleansing for my oily scalp

    Abby how about argan oil and whether it's good for your hair or not? For me, when I use it I feel like it actually dries my hair out! Even deep conditioning masks with argan make my hair feel dry and unruly.
    Also does using argan oil products on VERY LIGHT blonde hair gradually turn it yellow???

    Silicones on my lengths are great. Silicones in a shampoo on my sensitive scalp with fine hair is no bueno. Leaves my hair weighed down and an itchy film on my scalp.

    I have low porosity coily hair. My hair loves coconut. So I get a lot of products with coconut in them. I do air dry my hair, but I use a t-shirt or microfiber towel to dry my hair faster. It makes my curls pop. I had more dryness when I blow dried my hair and my hair wasn’t as curly.

    Al lot of hair experts and hair scientist don’t necessarily say that coconut oil is BAD for your hair, BUT they do say that coconut oil is VERY hard to wash out of your hair. So it causes build up if you use it too often and don’t wash it out of your hair VERY thorough.

    The thing about the water being damaging is SO contrary to what’s preached in the curly girl community. Idk what to believe. Does it just depend on your hair type?

    • @notascottishgirl2543
      @notascottishgirl2543 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your curls have been flattened, water will restore the texture, which is why it's so loved in the curly community. Also I think some people conflate skin care with hair care which is just wrong. Water can damage anyone's hair

    Can you specifically talk about dimethicone and it's different forms? I've recently been looking into it and that you want to use water soluble dimethicone products with PEG after it with a number. I've tried to buy silicone free products because I've found that straying from them has allowed my in between washes to last longer and my ends aren't as dry and my scalp not as oily. However, even though a product says silicone free, it still has dimethicone which is considered a silicone and it's so confusing! Olaplex is an example of this.

    • @ambernoland1506
      @ambernoland1506 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it says silicone free, it shouldn't have ANY silicones in it, even water-soluble ones, which are what some of the PEG ones are. Dimethicone is the thickest silicone. It's not water-soluble. All that means is that you have to use certain cleansers to remove it. There are sulfate free shampoos that will remove dimethicone and other silicones. Also, even dimethicone will not build up indefinitely on your hair. After 5 washes, it no longer builds up on top of itself. If it feels like it's weighing your hair down, just wash it. Dimethicone won't block out moisture, either. After all, your hair still gets wet with it on the hair, right?

    I’m not sure I understand about the porosity. It takes forever for my hair to dry and I have done the porosity test people recommended. So should I or should I not use products for low porosity hair. I do feel like sometimes products just sit on my hair. Is there anything you would recommend. I don’t like olaplex products accept for the oil. I tried the L’Oréal professional amino acid shampoo on my hair after it made the problem worse. Has your thoughts changed on protein overload. Lol Im so confused.
