Tony, I've been using a Boss Katana MK2 for the last few years and I've been wanting to try an affordable Vox. I found a VT40X a week ago on Facebook market place for $140. I watched this video before I bought it and I was sold. What a fantastic amp! A lot of great options and a simplistic software interface.
For the price it's a pretty special bit of gear. I still think some of the tube overdrive sounds I get with it are as good as I've heard. I'm never selling mine unless times get really hard. Enjoy that baby, and never quit tweaking and exploring tone. You'll have many hours of sonic satisfaction from that amp.
I had a 150-watt Valveltronics amp back in the day when they first came out.. loved I just ordered the vt40x off of Amazon after remembering just how much I like these hybrid amps. It's arriving tomorrow and I can't wait after seeing this video.
I just got this amp and I love it and the 12ax7 makes a big difference and it has a built in noise gate that automatically cuts off any noise without cutting your notes short...
I have the earlier version vt 40+,and it’s a good amp, even though it’s old. I mostly use it in manual mode. I don’t like the presets. The modulation effects are okay for me, less hassle than my pedals. I used it gigging for about 6 years, sometimes alone, sometimes miked into a PA. Good review man!
Wow! You gigged with it? That's cool I've had one for years. I dig it! It's not my main amp but it's so light I can move it anywhere in the house I wanna set up. Can't do that with the Marshall Tsl lol. The amp sounds pretty damn good and it's really versatile is what I like about it. You can learn a Slayer riff and a Skynard outro the same day same gear lol
Hey Tony, I've got the Vt20+, which is the previous model from this one, obviously 20w... I also have a Fender Champion 40 and a Bugera v22 (all tube). The Vox is probably the best all rounder of all, full stop. That preamp valve sets it appart from other modelling amps, especially for the clean tones I am after. I can't even imagine how good yours is, together with the software and all other extras. Take care!
That's very cool Anthony. I have the VT20X also. I got it first and loved it so much I thought I'l like to get the 40-watt version to use for small crowd gigs. I've played out with it four times I think, and it has always sounded superb in a live band situation. It's plenty loud for most small venues. I'd still love to have the 100w version to match it up better with my GTX 100. You are right. It's that tube in the preamp that makes this little amp really special. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
That sounds great for sure. The fact you can't move things around may actually be an advantage, as it is probably optimized for the order it is in now. I know when I move things around within BiasFX it doesn't take much to make something sound bad. This way you are more guaranteed to get a good sound.
You are quite right about the "fewer options is often better" approach. I find myself endlessly tweaking that Helix, and just getting on with it when I use the Vox. I super appreciate your support for my channel. I want to purchase a few more of your backing tracks for some future vids!
@@tonyleeglenn yeah, sometimes I get way too caught up in all the options I have for sure. That is another reason I like using STEMs I have previously made to combine into a new track. It takes a lot of that away. I think you should grab a few tracks for free Tony. Just enter "0" for the price when checking out. If you ever do stuff in a DAW then you can also use STEMs to make your own variations.
Very nice amp. I got one 20 watt and I got some nice clean and overdrive tone. Just one complaint: compressor, chorus , and overdrive/distortion are in the same slot. Then, for example, you can't use an overdrive and a compressor or choorus at the same time
I have an older Vox AD15VT... it has the chrome grill. Its a little beast. It has bass. Im a forever Valvetronix fan. Im searching Ebay for at least a 30w. Edit. I bought the same, another 15.
I think if you are in a user memory slot you can change things wheras the presets cant be changed. I am in two minds whether to get one of these, at the moment I use Amplitube 5 and Guitar Rig 5 going through my near field active monitorsfor practising at home, my main amp a 1973 WEM Dominator MKII is far too powerfull to use at home, but I like this Vox amp and coupled with the foot pedal it would serve me well, the only thing that puts me off is that it doesent have an FX loop so I can use my pedal board or multi FX units with it, I supppose I could use the onboard modulation and delay effects and use my fuzz/ OD and distortions pedals in front of it
I've had a few days with the VT40X. I am very pleased. I did an A to B comparison with my Super Champ X2 for tone. The clean on the Fender is noticeably richer and fuller, which is not a surprise since that is essentially all tube, however everything else is much better on the Vox, and the Vox functionality is far superior. I have eight useful and varied tones dialed in just waiting for a place to go play!
@@robertsguitarsandgear I knew you'd like it Robert. It's a surprisingly flexible amp - and yes - very easy to dial in a broad variety of sounds. I just don't think you beat it for the money. Does my AC10 ultimately sound better? Yes, maybe 15% better when set up properly - but then you have one sound, and as you switch guitars and add effects you are constantly twisting knobs. I like being able to program usable sounds and store them. And that tube in the preamp really does make a difference on the VT40x. I'll be interested to hear what you do with it.
iv just watched your hank marvin tone video, amazing. I was wandering if you would be so kind, to advise on a tone . i play berlin take my breath away, i know i'l never get the tone without a synth pedal but is there any setting that could spice up it up a little on a vox 20.please
I’m thinking about going with this. Coming from Headrush and Boss platforms with just too many tweaking options. I’m debating between the 40 or the 100. Any suggestions? Thanks!
If you’re going to be gigging, then I’d say the 100. I own the VT20x and the Vt40x. I’ve not played through the 100x, so I really don’t know how loud it can get, but I imagine you might like the extra volume - unless you’re in a band that mics the amps. I think any of these amps could work well if connected direct to the board.
I think you probably can. The thing I think would sound awesome is get an electro harmonics switch blade and play both amps stereo. I’ve done that with various amps I have pairing them with the VT 40 X and it sounds amazing.
You're not allowed to rock on a telecaster. Take this video down at once! You owe us 2 minutes of chicken picken and ten minutes of needless pentatonic scales with poorly executed bends.
I love this amp... Had mine for a month or two now. The Tone room is by far the best "tone room" Ive used yet
