I use one traveling through 110v and 220v countries, because it is one of the few small amps that I can carry with me that's an all in one solution for practice and small room gigs that runs off of both 110v and 220v power. 50/60hz power variance doesn't seem to bother it. Also, recently I played an outdoor gig, and didn't have time to get another set-up, so we placed a mic at the front, and it was monstrous! It's a good practice amp for clean and slightly crunchy tones, that sings better with the power knob maxed. It's small, so it will not compete with a drum set, nor push a lot of bass, but if you set it to sing into a mic, you can gig with it - but I'd say with non-distortion tones.

    My dear Elmo,
the VOX VT40X with a 1x 10" Speaker Valvetronix Combo was my choice, I bought it with a €10 birthday bonus @ €209 in Mai 2022.
The most important thing for my, because I live in the shared apartment, that I get a good sound through headphones.
But now it's also important for me to get a good sound from the speaker, and the 10-inch speaker helps a lot. I have tested both variants,
of course as a beginner in 2022, but my choice was very good to take the VT40X.
This type of amp certainly can't do anything really well, but it can do a whole lot satisfactorily and for practicing, the VT40X is great.
You can get to know so many amp types and effects, and all for very little money.
In the Tone Room, 20 amplifiers, 10 effects (Compressor, Gold Drive, Distoyer), 7 effects (Hall, Echo, Phaser, Termolo), 4 room effects (room, hall)
Of course, none of this is the real deal, but you get a good idea of what you might buy as real hardware later on.
    Regards
    Franky jr.
P.S.: Go on with your good work.

Now, I am a flamenco guitarplayer but love the electrical guitar as well. Did not play the electrical guitar for years and sold my Blackstar HT stack. Did own a Peavey Ultra 60/Marshall/Alesis combination in the past which I also sold. Purchased the Vox VT20X recently, for 185 Euro’s new. Obviously I am not aware of the current state of technology when it comes to guitar amps but I am really impressed about the sound quality of this amp. It does have all the effects I wanted, without all the cables, pedals, batteries involved. So, for me this is the best purchase in years. Maybe I could have purchased something better but without a serious benchmark, I am still impressed with it though.

Lord Elmo TTP, astounding how some amp manufacturers can't seem to grasp that just because an amp has lots of features, if you play a chord through it and it sounds like the mud I get on my shoes from walking the dog through an unexpectedly wet field, that's right as opposed to just regular mud, it just isn't worth having. When I was very young and had very little money I really respected companies like Peavey for putting out amps that at least had a stable warm sound and were inexpensive, even the little Peavey Decade which I actually got authentic Queen sounds out of. These jack of all trades cheap amps are really missing the tone that inspires, imop, thanks Elmo, as usual a pleasure to hear your outstanding playing, Bruce.

It may not be an accurate depiction of the amps it is trying to copy but the amp sounded pretty good in my opinion, when you consider the price. It is an inexpensive amp with a lot of digital effects, so its to be expected not to be great sounding, however it will provide Vox quality which is commendable.

Yes that's a fair assement, I owned one, there is more amp models to check once you hooked it up to the PC, my issue also was the spearker and the older USB B connection, Vox has never updated this amp since it came out many moons ago that was a big mistake , this amp could do with a better speaker , updated USB with the option of using it as a interface, the boutique is the Dumble Amp model, there is a 5150 amp model once you hook it up to your pc , and a decent plexi, as a previous owner I would say this is an amp that needs some updates, but it seems VOX has forgotten this amp and it's potential to be one of the better budget friendly amps, as always Elmo fair , and no bs review, cheers,

I have a couple of 100 Watt 2-12 combo's that I run in stereo. The first in the "Chrome Grill Series"...It only had 11 amp models and 2 programmable channels. (later versions would have many more).
Some say the series I have is the best one. I love mine. Either as a pedal platform or with their own sound.
One EXTREMELY important thing to keep in mind is if the amp has BUILT IN NOISE GATE.
I am not sure if your version has, but they do on the Chrome Series. Except it is NOT listed on the top panel.
You have turn the effects OFF first to adjust and read the manual. I found that made a HUGE difference on the higher gain models..
Also be warned that some of the later releases suffered from soldering issues. It turns out that these were very popular when they came out and flew off the shelves. So they had to step up production to meet the demand. Some underpaid guy in a factory in Vietnam (where they were made) had to turn down the heat of his soldering gun so he could breathe. I understand. It may mean you need to get some things re-soldered if you have a later series.
The price we pay for saving money? I also heard that they changed the speakers from the Original ones I had, just to keep up with demand.......I just wonder how many truly excellent products suffered from the same fate?
Got released, was widely received and sold out everywhere.....Only to be followed by a factory rushed 2nd release that cut corners and even on parts just to keep up with demand? Thanks for listening, and thanks for the review.

I bought Celestion Eight 15 for my Marshall MG15. Sounds much better now, lows are tighter, mids more musical and less harshness in the top end. Had DSL5 before and now MG15 is actually comparable. It's a good replacement I think, especially if you play in a small room 3x4m or similar. In a bigger room it felt small and not enough so I'd recommend bigger amp with bigger speaker (even though I play on low volume)

I have it, payed the misery of 160 €. Now I know that it's quite difficult to find them in the market(at least in my Country) and the price is increased.
I think it's a great amp for the money: the presets are nothing special but you can get some good sounds with some dedication. I have to say also that the amp usually sounds better live... it's quite difficult to catch how it sounds, probably because of the frontal bass reflex hole.
In the end, in my opinion, it doesn't make any sense to compare it to valve amps with better speakers that cost thrice (or more) the price...

I have the original 15 watt Valvetronix model which was the predecessor to this amp. The simulated models are not an accurate representation of the amps they are said to be modelling; the simulations are nowhere near as accurate as the Fender Tonemaster simulations for example, but there is a large price difference between the Valvetronix and Tonemaster series. Having said that, there are definitely some good sounds in this amp but don't expect them to accurately model the real amps. The 12AX7 tube inside does give it some of the feel and response of a real tube amp. If budget is limited, this series is definitely worth checking out, especially if you can afford one of the higher watt models with a larger speaker.

I have an original vt20+ bought about a decade ago. it is super easy to replace preamp tube inside this amp. A JJ tube or a mesa boogie rectifier tube can be had fairly cheaply. while vox claims these tubes last for product life time. A daily 30 minute use will see these tubes turn odd sounding to my ears in about 3-4 years. At the time this hybrid amps came out in market, there wasn't a huge choice for this category of amps. the reason our host cant decide whether this newer amp is great or not because we are now spoilt for choice. -:). And that's great from a consumer point of view.

That thing is sturdy and sounds good for crunch and cleans when plugged into a decent amp or with headphones. I think you are right Elmo, the speaker in the VT20X amp is crap. Definitely wasn't getting a warm fuzzy feeling listening to this amp. None of the amp models sounded particularly good and that speaker was terrible. To my ears it just sounded flat. I do think that if you picked up one used for cheap and swapped the speaker for a Celestion or Eminence (again purchased used, no sense in buying new) it might have potential as a solid practice amp. Its because there is a built in noise gate that automatically switches on when on high gain amp models. Put your amp setting on, then put the tuner on and turn the value 1 knob all the way to the left. You'll hear a lot more noise but this will allow harmonics to ring out more.

Never got what the Valvetronix really means, as far as I understood so far it's just a partially analog circuit that simulates a real tube circuit. But that fancy looking thing isn't really a tube and it's not a really hybrid?

    • @jjjddd231

I've been attracted to one of their technologies. It's been sort of like a fish attracted to s shiny new lure. This new tech is a tiny tube (valve) called a Nutube. It's sort of unique these days to have someone produce a new kind of vacuum tube. The types of tubes used in most guitar amps date back to the 1950s or before. I thought this amp may have had a Nutube,......nope. It's just another amp I don't need with a 12AX7 tube (valve). Thanks for another fine demo.

    • @cliftongardner4367

IIRC, the “valvetronix” tech is a 12AX7 1-watt power stage that is then attenuated and run into a larger solid state power stage. This is to impart a warm, tube-like EQ and sound to the power section not present in a harsher, pure SS power stage.
Most people assume it’s in the pre-amp section, which the later AV-series amps include.
Don’t know how much it helps, but I had a chrome-grill model a long time ago and thought it sounded alright. I’d be very curious to hear how the 100-watt version sounds as a pure power amp running a pedalboard into the FX return.

Is it my ears or did it sound like compression was on, especially on the clean sounds? Seemed to be a lot of emphasis on the initial attack which I found jarring. I've seen other videos of this amp where it didn't sound like that at all, altogether smoother.
TBH, I'm not sure if the whole modelling amp thing is up my alley. Seems easier to get a straightforward, pedal friendly amp with a well defined sound that you can tweak using IR instead.

  • @joelpoitras6226
    @joelpoitras6226 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Those need too much time and dedication in tweaking. The presets are crap and fizzy, but good tones can be dialed in. That new vox line is a downgrade with the 12ax7 in the preamp i think, the previous series VT+ with the 12ax7 in the power amp was much better.
After a couple of months with the VT20+ i liked it so much i have upgraded to the cadillac of that series.
The limited edition Valvetronix Pro VTX150 with a Neodynium 12" Celestion speaker
Effect loop and extension speaker out. It has the larger EL84 single tube in the power amp section for breakup instead of a small 12ax7 in the preamp to shape tone.
I think it's probably the highest point of Vox's modeling repertoire.

These little modelling amp are great for starter.
I wish i had these in the 90s.
What we had were crappy solid state mini amp... that sounded like bees...trap in a glass jar.
They are still far from responsive like a real tube... and the culprit is latency and processing power...
The problem with these is the high frequency hiss from the modelling.
    The latency.
    The lack of natural compression.
    Etc.
I guess if a entire generation would only learn with these parameter they would probably compensate all these issues with technique
But when i finally got ib my mid 20s i vould afford real classic amp with full tubes... professional grade.. with analogue latency and responsivness..
So i cannot go back to modeller.
These day i only use real amp with effect loop.
If i ever use modeller.. its for my client with 4 cables technique.
So i can have proper stage gaining.. and time effect after the preamp.

I’m am quite surprised about your opinion on the VOX AV30. First off, i think it is pretty ugly (why, oh why VOX, do you think you need to produce amps with such ugly modern designs if you do have such an iconic and timeless design ? ;)). But luckily i don’t listen with my eyes, and to me the AV30 can produce some some really nice and inspiring clean, slightly as well as heavily overdriven sounds. May be i am biased, but i do really believe that this is in part because it does not use any digital modeling in the preamp section but good old analog solid state techniques. I also really like the design, with two completely identical channels. as wel as the use of a two separate 12AX7 tubes to create natural preamp as well als poweramp tube distortion and transformer feedback effects.
The presence of a gain and volume per channel and a single ‘power level’ dial may be a bit confusing and could mislead people in using the power level dial as a master volume. But a bit of experimenting is very rewarding and a correct understanding can provide really nice results (simplest explanation: bedroom: ‘powerlevel’ low (for low wattage tube amp characteristics). Practice or small gig : powerlevel high (for higher wattage tube amp characteristics).
Finally: i love the fact that the AV30 not only has a ‘insert loop’, but that it is located in the signal chain before the amp powerlevel circuitry. First of al, i don’t understand why the presence of an effect loop is so often ignored by YT reviewers. It adds so much functionality and is such an important feature if you want to use an amp together with your other existing gear (and don’t we all want that ? ;))
One very practical application is the possibility to use an amp as a powered speaker cabinet for any other preamp using the effect return input. However, with the AV30 you can also add some tube power amp characteristics, which can be very nice in combination with digital modelers, which can often still sound a bit sterile :)
But the unique possibility Unfortunately, some great results (you do get a feel of how these three dials work together, have seen people use the powerlessly to use but with the gain, the power I have not seen this in any other amp besides the AV series. You do have to think a little bit how far as i know, it is the only amp that with sounds (and all analog !). amps, especially
